A quick guide for two methods of doing prison skip on Gravemind. A lot of people think this trick is much harder than it really is, or only ever do it with camo, so this is to show how you'd do it in an IL setting, or for something like MCC fullgame where you'd have no camo.
Sorry the audio is so low, I tried to turn the narration volume up as high as it could go, but it's still super quiet.
Please feel free to ask any questions and I'll answer them as best I can.

Great tutorial. It's so hard to find detailed info like this about speed running that isn't just a clip of someone executing a trick perfectly while barely explaining anything.

@@Tapport I can't really properly explain ghosting, and also as it only works on classic even if I was good at it I'd have no way to record it. For sword flying and cancelling, Cryphon (current H2 WR holder) has made a solid video. Swordflying in particular is just very hard, and takes a lot of practice though. Finally managed to do it after about 40 tries. Thank you for this guide. This section is actually impossible -- at least for me. I would die before I even got near the bottom of the gravity lift. Whose silly idea was to make the player go down a grav lift with enemies at the bottom?..worse yet, place a check point immediately after the enemies notice you? I suppose after finding this I am thankful that the previous checkpoint occurred just before that fight, rather than after killing the enemies in that room (otherwise, I would have had to start the level again, and you would have to each time you failed -- imagine that! 🤮). I think this section is the worse design failure in the entire franchise. They clearly didn't test their game on legendary. No one plays that bit on legendary and thinks to themselves "brilliant idea, we'll keep that AND place a checkpoint right about...here!...where the enemies start shooting at you. 🤔 Anyway, thanks a lot. I can now continue the game! 🥰

My hang up is that I can't for the life of me get him to punch me in the tube. I've got him set up stuck trying to go up the elevator, walk between him, and EVERY time he punches me, I just fly across the elevator entrance. I never fall in. I've tried adjusting my positioning but I just get knocked across and he falls in by himself.

I know that happened to me when I had either the sputnik or feather skull on. For some reason punches count as explosions I guess

Don't do this method. Instead wait for the second brute to fly upwards and then press Jump + Melee on him (Jump + melee at the same time) and then immediately press R. This will make you melee lunge cancel under him so you can get real close to him. Both you and the brute will then fall down together.

If anyone is having trouble doing this for speedrun purposes, just use save/quit method. It works as of 2024 in MCC for Halo 1 and 2. For 3, 4 , ODST, and Reach, dashboard quit (xbox) or ctrl+alt+del and end process for halo in task manager (windows). Then start halo back up and resume from the campaign menu. Obviously the Xbox dashboard quit method is way faster. On Series X you can dashboard quit, re-open game, then resume and load into the game in about 15 seconds. Can beat the Prison section in like 4-5 minutes w/ this method once you memorize the enemy spawns. I found prison skip method impossible to pull off.

I get shot and killed by a brute around 0:15 mark on my way down the lift. Any ideas how to avoid that?

Sorry for such a late reply. The two things I can think of that would increase the chances of you getting shot at would be shooting whilst you're near the lift, or if you melee cancel to bring the brute close to you at the start of the lift (like I do at 1:17). Unfortunately I'm not really sure what causes the brute to shoot at you. I know a couple other people have the same issue, but I've personally almost never had the brute shoot at me, and I'm not sure exactly why.

Holy shit props to anyone who can do this cause every time I got close my fingers and hand got tired I eventually said f it and just killed the enemies honestly wasted my time trying to get around this part but if you can button mash fast asf for a long time then this should be good for you

I'm starting to get the brute consistently down the tube but as I'm falling no matter what I do the brutes on the next levels below always somehow see me and kill me as I'm falling

I'm not really too sure what you can do about this. I've personally never died to the brutes on the floor below. The only reason outside of pure bad luck that I could think of as to why they are agro'd would maybe be that you are shooting too close to the lift entrance? Out of curiosity are you using the first or second method from this video? Also, just clarifying, although I'm pretty I know the brutes you mean, you're getting shot at by the ones that are directly below the lift, as in a couple meters below you, and not the ones at the very bottom of the lift right? Because if you try to go to the very bottom of the lift you'll die every time on Legendary.

@@ShaneClough I only do the second method (the run in and run back out and hope the brute is in the loop of jumping in) it is just bad luck, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Practiced it a lot tonight and I'm seeing great results!

My theory rn is that if a sticky explodes in the room before you go down the lift, it alerts the brutes below. I haven't had enough brute shots happen before going down but it wouldn't surprise me if that worked the same

when you say "spam melee and jump followed by reload/switch weapon" how do you mean? melee->jump->reload, or melee + jump same time then reload.. basically is it 3 buttons in rapid succession or?? edit: also does it work in mcc?

Melee + Jump at the same time then Reload. Sorry, probably should have clarified it a bit better. I tried to make it somewhat clear with my cadence though. Essentially you just want to spam jump, whilst melee cancelling. I use a control scheme where RB is melee, A is jump and X is reload, so with my right index, I push RB at the same time I push A with my thumb, then between that I push X with my left thumb. It's not a particularly conventional control scheme though, so it might be different for you. In short, Melee + Jump --> Reload, but very rapidly. If you do it too slow you'll actually melee the brute which could kill it.

IMO it's actually easier on MCC; you can just mash jump/melee/switch weapon with your thumb and you should generally ascend the lift.

I know it's been a week+ now, so I hope you got it! For future reference, if you die 5(?) times very quickly after a checkpoint the game will actually revert to the previous one. Can be helpful for other tricks or general gameplay

I couldn't get this to work....until I realized that I had the Sputnik skull on 😂 I kept getting flung over the lift and the brute went down without me

It is still possible with sputnik, you can do this on LASO actually, but it's much, much harder because exactly what you said happens all the time haha

It's exceeding unlikely that this has been patched. Without seeing your POV it's hard to know exactly what's wrong, but likely you are not doing the melee cancel properly.

the brute dies in 2 body shots with the beam rifle how do i stun him long enough to get in position. and the 2nd method, the brute shot brute above drops down and kills me before they brute gets stuck in the lift. anybody have any ideas?

@@Hirotoro4692 Chiefs arms aren't long enough to melee him 3 meters away so the beam rifle shots allow you to stun the brute whilst simultaneously closing the distance between him.

i’m fast twitch muscle fiber dominant and still my fingers just refuse to let me do this. i’ve tried for 4 hours now with a ten minute break. i can get the brute in the lift with little frustration but when i do the reload cancel i don’t ascend in the lift. when i do the weapon swap (y) cancel i ascend for a bit then kill the brute. no combo works for me and i’m playing claw on bumper jumper which you’d assume is the easiest way to do combos. i mean it is for sword flying but i just can’t do this one. i’ve been on the verge of tears doing this despite being a young guy full of testosterone. i’ve never faced such a challenge in video games in my entire life. if anyone can give any tips whatsoever that aren’t already online it’d be much appreciated. i’ve searched through everything and only found one other person who can’t get the button combo right. i’m very tired and sick with covid so that might affect my spamming skills but i’ve just had it. i’m going mentally insane over something so small and so simple. i wish you all the best of luck and hope you don’t suffer this pain.

Just press melee and reload fast. No need to jump as well if you are still stuck

Shane Clough ok, I’m just trying to do all the LASO campaigns and I’m dreading this one. I’ve seen other videos saying you need a certain button layout (default) in order to pull off the mashing part. I just hope it’ll be easy with a keyboard.

@@Luke-mu5mq It'll be extremely easy on PC. The mashing part is actually the easiest part of the trick by a mile. And you don't need to use the default layout at all, I don't use the default layout myself. Also, if you are looking to do this on LASO, I have a separate tutorial for that, the setup is slightly different because the skulls effect the enemy AI.

Been more than a year later but I spent hours failing at this on PC and gave up. I hear hooking a controller in and using that makes it easier to perform the button mash because there's something about the inputs with a keyboard is different.

At 1:16 how did you close the gap between you and the brute that was outside melee range???? This is my biggest struggle wheb doing this trick.

The brute was actually in melee range in that clip. I just did a melee cancel to get myself directly underneath him (Melee then reload). Unfortunately there is no way to get in melee range if the brute is out of range as you start falling down the lift. However, if you use the bruteshot captain brute in the lift room, he actually falls slightly faster than you, so if he is out of range at the very start, he might actually fall within range before it's too late. But that requires an entirely different setup (I can't remember what people called it, but it's the one that was used in the LASO deathless runs).

Getting the brute on the lift somewhat consistently but when it comes time to go up doing the button combo always kills the brute. Help what am I doing wrong?

If you're killing the brute that probably means you aren't canceling your melee fast enough. You need to make sure you push either reload or switch weapon after pushing melee, but before the melee actually lands.

This doesn't work. Everytime the brute dies when you beam him twice. May as well do goddamn prison. And I can't ever get the brute to hit me correctly. Or strafe correctly.

Brutes health is seeded, so if beaming the brute twice kills him, you just have an unfortunate seed. However, the second method will work regardless of seed. Prison skip isn't necessarily easier than doing the prison normally, it's just faster, and that's why people use it in speedruns.

I'm honestly not sure. Before I learnt how to do the trick properly I did a coop LASO H2 run and tried the skip for about 30 mins with no luck, but I've never tried it again with a proper setup. I'd imagine it's probably possible, but I'm not sure, if it's worth trying at all I'm even more unsure. It would be worth just practising it with specific skulls on to see if any particular skulls make the trick too hard. At the very least, stuff like anger would probably ruin the consistency of the setup. In my opinion, if you're doing coop LASO, it's probably worth just trying to get down the elevator with as much over shields as possible and just hope for the best. That's what I did, and it only took maybe 10-15 mins to survive the elevator, but I could have just gotten lucky.

Shane Clough thanks for the reply on an old video man! We’re gonna try and tackle the beast tomorrow, but I think we will try to see if the skip is possible with all the LASO skills, but using the scarab skull to get to the lift a lot easier .

Shane Clough hey man it worked!! Took plenty of tries trying to get the brute to fall down the right time, but it saved that room. I’ve not got footage of the real run, but I’ve got footage of it working on SOLO laso with no Blind skull and scarab skull. Your tutorial was a great help btw 👍🏻

Ok, I'll try explain it more clearly. firstly, you should practice melee canceling. You can practice this on any enemy, just play on easy so that they don't kill you whilst you're practicing. To melee cancel push melee and then reload directly afterwards. If you do this correctly you will melee and lunge towards and enemy, but you will not actually hit them. One you have this down, practice spamming melee cancels as fast as you can, being sure you never actually hit the enemy. Once you are confident with this, all that is left to do is start spamming jump whilst you're melee canceling. If you managed to get into the lift with the brute above your head, you got by far the hardest part of the trick done. Just practice the melee cancels and you'll be all good. Also, if reload is an uncomfortable key to press, you can instead press switch weapon and it will work exactly the same.

FYI for anyone trying these setups on LASO: DON'T. Sputnik basically invalidates these, you'll get sent flying over the lift the vast majority of the time due to the sputnik skull.

9 months later, I'm back doing this again because I'm a glutton for punishment, apparently... (I'm doing all MCC playlists, working on H2L) I find the second method in this video to be easier, though I would say 1/4 odds is a bit generous. Assume 1/10. I had a close shave where I got the brute in the tube, but messed up the button combo. I accidentally back smacked him and got a checkpoint, I thought I would have to restart, but it turned out I got the checkpoint mid-melee, so if I reverted back to the checkpoint he would die, but if I mashed like an ape it interrupted the melee.

@@ShaneClough There was a speedrun challenge on Halo 2 from Moistcritikal (Just recently) and Prison was the most challenging part of the speedrun. Two speedrunners found a way to skip prison by using your method.

That's what the reload button is for. If you hit it as you start a melee attack it'll interrupt it, preventing you from hurting the brute.

@@1SilverDollar I managed to do it that same day lol. I was playing on controller and for the life of me I couldn’t press the reload and melee button fast enough. Either I’ll kill the brute or I’ll end up falling down. So I would switch to keyboard for that part and once I do the skip I’ll switch back to controller lol. Keyboard made it super easy

This is still really hard even with the explanation. I must have a crappy checkpoint because I get lit up to lose my shields before I get down to the brutes every time. It doesn't matter if I kill the jackal on the right or not. It would probably be faster for me to just fight through the prison.

@IGogetaX10I I did get the second method to work eventually. Took me close to 2 hours. It would have been faster to just go through the prison. Of course the first time I tried this skip was on Legendary; I never practiced it on an easier difficulty. I don't feel like the trick is easily repeatable.

This same setup should also work on easy, but it won't be as consistent, because the AI won't behave the exact same. I definitely wouldn't try the first setup though, try the second setup I show in this vid. You might also want to try looking at a speedrun of this level on easy and trying to copy what they do if you're having trouble getting this setup to work.

Melee cancel + Jump. To melee cancel you can either push Melee Reload or Melee Switch Weapon

I kept wondering why the brute would punch me across the room till i realised i had sputnik skull on. Mega facepalm moment but this helped me discover the second way is much better than the normal way in my opinion.

The brutes health is seeded each time the level is started. Unfortunitely, sometimes you get a bad seed and the brute will not be able to survive two beam shots. It's pretty rare though. That said, I think the second method is probably much easier, and much more consistent.

Okay I know im very late to this but do you have to mash the buttons in a specific order? Any time i get him in the elevator with me I instakill him with a back smack

Yeah, the order maters. The idea is that you're meleeing, then canceling the melee by either reloading or switching weapons, and then jumping. Melee -> Reload/Switch Weapon -> Jump. If you're finding that you're killing the brute with a melee that means the time inbetween pressing melee and reload/switch weapon is too long. The timing on when you push jump I feel doesn't really matter, as long as you're just kinda spamming it. But I find it easiest just to mash them sequentially.

I managed to do it then by simply spamming jump (continuously) while pressing the button for melee and weapon switch (in an alternating manner: B-Y-B-Y... on controller).

I don't think Prison skip is possible on mcc anymore. There is always a third brute in the room that falls through the lift which prevents the tether off of the brute you try to do it on.
