In this Video we tear into a 2nd Gen Prius Transmission part by part and do our best to explain what everything is.
We are by no means experts in this so please feel free to comment below on things we may have missed.
And before you ask, All parts in this video already have homes in new projects, so nothing is for sale, sorry.

Many many thanks to both of you. I landed upon this video completely by chance (was looking for Prius inverter related videos), and I am thrilled that I did. The final bit where you put all the components together, and talked us through how MG1 and MG2 synchronize and drive the wheels either via battery power or via IC engine power was fantastic as well. I have always believed that opening up a machine is the best way to gauge quality, I think I now consider myself better informed about Toyota's hybrid drive systems thanks to this video.

Great video guys. There are a lot of so-called auto enthusiasts out there who have, for some insane reason, convinced themselves that hybrids are impossibly complex, unserviceable, frail, an affront to god, a harbinger of the apocalypse, etc. I wish I could force them all to watch your video, because from a maintenance standpoint, this is no more complicated than a conventional hydraulic automatic transmission - and as you guys mention, the Toyota HSD power-split drive is practically bulletproof. I've been in Camry Hybrid NYC taxis with 400k+ miles on them. They're incredibly durable cars.
@soilmanted
@soilmanted 8 лет назад
+doctor zaius It looks SIMPLER than a conventional hydraulic automatic transmission - at least mechanically. I'm wondering about the computer control box which reads the 2 shaft speed sensors and decides when to start the engine, how much juice to give to M2 to control its speed, etc.

+Theodore Zuckerman It is. As a gearhead and embedded systems engineer, I see this video and want to go pillage priuses for fun brushless DC motor parts at the junkyard. I guess I might do that Sunday, actually... Anyone know if the motor-generators are bathed in transmission fluid, coolant, or neither? I'm guessing ATF or air since I see no coolant deposits, but I couldn't tell for sure.

BTW, with those lineman gloves, you are supposed to wear the accompanying leather gloves over them to protect the insulation. The rubber gloves by themselves can be easily damaged and should not be trusted with high-voltage.

Thanks for the video, really helpful. My Mk1 Prius has a mechanically-operated park pawl that's not engaging for whatever reason, I'm trying to figure out if it's a massive job to get it out, in case it it broken, or whether it could be the cable isn't pushing it far enough to engage.

IF you are going to work on cast aluminum on the ground, lay something soft down before placing a mating surface face down. Cast aluminum gouges and scrapes easily and mating surfaces are machined. Please do not do what they did and place it directly on concrete if you run into a corroded bolt and accidently turn the whole thing you could destroy the surface causing premature failure of parts and or leaks.
@chrissscottt

And preferably hoist it onto a bench. Much easier and comfortable to work on.
@nick68231
@nick68231 5 лет назад
Yes, great video. I really enjoyed watching this as an owner of a Lexus RX400h with basically the exact same HSD system. A few pieces of advice to go along with what Mishale said though. I definitely agree with her about the gearbox 100% but another thing. The metal tools as well should not be used on any machined mating surfaces, especially soft aluminum. No metal hammers to pop out gears either. They make hard plastic wedges and special plastic tools for that, plastic hammers to bang on the wedges and gears.

Thank You for this great video! Very nice job explaining the components. I have a question that I hope you either have knowledge of or can obtain. Can you tell me what the Kwh is of MG1 and what is the output current of MG1 when it is in regen mode? I realize that the power MG1 is generating is 3 phase which must be changed to DC to recharge the batteries. Just curious what Volts, Amperage is produced directly by MG1 if in fact it is similar to or greater than a standard alternator prior to being rectified. My guess is that MG1 produces more power output than a standard alternator.

Great Video, Thanks for posting! One question I have about the transmission's operation that I just can't wrap my head around, is - Is there any kind of physical or mechanical brake on the rotation of the MG1 (the smaller one)? That power split device looks very much like an open diff. It seems like there's a lot of opportunity for power to spill out the back of the transmission (thru MG1) when the ICE and the main motor MG2 are turning at full torque, much like when you lift one wheel of an open differential off the ground and that unloaded wheel spins up uncontrollably. How do they stop that?
@kenstein
@kenstein 8 лет назад
+64davrecon I'm honestly not sure, but you can use a brushless motor as somewhat of a brake - you just shunt the windings all to ground and it becomes an eddy current brake, effectively. It won't completely stop the shaft, there will be some slippage, but it will bring it nearly to a halt, which is good enough in this case. If you want peak efficiency you could even put that power into charging the battery to apply reaction force to the MG1 rotor instead of just shunting it to ground.

Hi Guys, Great Vid! I have a question about how the ATF gets into and all over the internal parts: I did not see any seals to contain the ATF in the gears so I am assuming it goes all over the place in the trans too. So does the ATF get all over the electric parts too? And doesnt that make a bit of a electrical shorting hazard as the ATF gets old/carries metal dust and breaks down? I also suspect that high freq high voltage would have little problem finding an electrical path through the ATF, especially when it is full of metal dust from the gears wearing over time. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

20:03 hpm magnetic motors also suffer less from heat & generate less heat on start up, and also use much less intitial inductive load which keeps the heat down & lengthens the life of the motor they also weigh much less .

Thanks!, Jason the Tech in the Video let me know they go through extensive training on how to open these, we had the phone book sized manual sitting on the desk next to us. But being that we did not plan to put it together again, and that it was damaged in a wreck, we did the typical 'guy' thing and skipped the manual :)

@ 15:30 another reason why it doesnt run is because its "poling" without the rear bearing being located and the air gap being small, the rotor is being pulled by the magnetic field over to the stator

My prius gen 3 stopped me on the road. It give P0335. Crankshaft Position Sensor. Sensor changed, wiring harness ok, Ecu changed still the car refused to start. I thinking the mg1 has gone bad. Before the car stopped me, it was rattling and making knocking sound on at slow moving speed when the HV battery is charging only. If the Mg1 stop charging the HV battery the rattling noise stops. Could it be my transaxle that is my problem. I thinking of buy new engine and transaxle?
