I've always wanted to fly one of these aircraft since I was 11 years old in 1971. They are one of the most beautiful aircraft. My dad taught Block 5 jet engine mechanics at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls TX and would occasionally set me in one of these while he readied for his next class.

I fly out of Gillespie regularly, and I was amazed at how low their glide slope was for 27R, then they topped it with a touchdown on tip of the extended threshold and managed to vacate the runway on taxiway Charlie. Incredible flying. F-5’s in and out of Gillespie, that’s stretching the margins!

The CF-5D certainly looks like a T-38, but then the Canucks essentially configured them as advanced trainers like our T-38s. The F-5 has always been a sweet airframe, reliable and efficient even with the lower powered J85s. The digital camouflage on the chase plane is cool.

For a time they were used as adversary aircraft at Top Gun School. They gave the F-15s and F-16s fits--often achieving a 2 to 1 kill advantage. They are much more nimble than the "F" jets and until 'stand off" missiles they were embarrassing the supposedly superior jets. This is a fighter we should still have i our inventory.

@@robertwatson818 I was one of the F-5 mechanics at VFC-13 in Fallon for 9 years. We were the squadron you are thinking of. At one time, we had 14 single seat F-5N's that we got from the Swiss and one two seat F-5F. They were such a good aircraft; simple, reliable and easy to work on. All our F-5's are gone and were replaced by 40 F-16A, B, C and D aircraft. For now, VFC-13's maintenance department is closed down while those of us that decided to transition are being retrained.

@@KeenanLacelle you asked...excerpt from Soviet Air Force test pilot Vladimir Kondaurov (clunky translation): "As I got to know the "Foreigner" I grew up in my respect to him both as to the flying machine and as to the fighter jet. Unapt to aggressive maneuvering when in "cruise" configuration (flaps and slats up), he would have changed when the pilot put it into the "maneuvering" configuration (flaps and slats down). Then from a heavy clodhopper he turned into a swallow. Checking out the capabilities of the optical sight, I enjoyed keeping the reticle on the target while attacking with a 6g pull, whereas on MiG-21 it would disappear from the view at 3g. After determining the basic specification we decided to set up for a mock air-to-air combat with MiG-21bis. I would fight on my "native" MiG-21, and Nikolay Stogov - on F-5. The close air combat started head-on in equal positions. Every flight ended with the same result: MiG-21 lost, although he had much higher thrust-to-weight ratio. I laid myself out just to keep the initial position. I took the most out of the aircraft, took all he could give, but the targeting angle grew steadily and in a few minutes the "bandit" was on my tail. Only tactics could save me. What I was stricken by the most is that the result of the mock fights took not only the generals by surprise (one could explain this somehow), but also the military research departments of the Air Force and even the aviation engineers. They would review the data records for thousand times, ask the pilots, especially me. Frankly, I was somewhat confused as well, but when I tried the F-5, I realized that it was not an ordinary one. So, what was happening in flight? At the speeds of 800 km/h (430 kts) and above the fight was on equal terms, nobody had explicit advantages, but the fighting was not literally maneuvering because of the large radii of the maneuvers. We would both stay at the equal maximum allowable g-loads. Whilst at the speeds below 750 km/h (400 kts) one couldn't sustain these g-loads even with the afterburner. And the lower the speed was the faster it decayed, thus lowering the maximum available g-load. It turned out that the aerodynamics was what won the day, not the thrust/weight ratio."

First hand report: The F-5E Is a magnificet fighter. In particular the unique F-5Es ship sets perfectly assembled for the Swiss Air Force at F+W flying factory in Switzerland. They have a specially designed Northrop wing upgrade that could accept a higher wing load (1.5 /gs) that all the other F-5E and F-5Fs. They were so well assembled and maintained by Swiss technicians and engineers that many were sold back to the U.S. as Navy as Aggressor Aircraft for use at the USN Fallon Top Gun school. They were also used in the movie Top Gun. Many are still flight worthy at NASA. Switzerland replaced the F-5s with the Northrop designed F-18E/F platforms. Congratulations! Smooth and uneventful, a great flight. Noticed both of you put them down a little short of the numbers. Was that because the runway is on the short side or to save brakes? What airport was this? Thanks for filming and sharing with us,.

Correct, and check the video description for the airport.

Ahhh, SEE. I know that pattern very well! Got my PPL at Golden State there back in 2014. I miss the heck outta San Diego.

Canada at one point had over 100 CF-5s in storage. Couldn't give them away. I think a lot of the CF-5Ds were actually upgraded to be lead-in trainers for the CF-18 in the early 80s. Would explain the lack of wingtip tanks and rails in place of.

I worked E,F and Bs at Williams Afb and we tried that removing Tip Tanks and weapons put on missile rails instead but they were still DOGS with those T-38 motors!!-13s compared to -21s on the Es and Fs!

I was the last Sqn Ops O when we retired the upgraded jets. Flew mostly with tip tanks and only rails with centerline tank for air to air trg. The upgrade package was awesome. Shame we had to retire them so early but politics dictated otherwise.

Since the F-14 was retired in 2006 they have been entering our airspace at will. Nobody can stop them.

Never flew the F-5 but both the A-4 and F-4, in Vietnam. It's a beautiful paint job. Not too many privates remaining. I see a few at Catalina Island occasionally.

It does look very much like a mix of t-38 and f-5. I see parts from both jets.

Do these guys have a rough schedule for when they fly? I live right on the takeoff side of Gillespie (Fly right over us in this video it looks like) and I have yet to be outside to spot them when they go over, and theyve never been parked on the ramp at their hangar when I have driven by (The spare F5 parts behind the hangar is a giveaway of which is theirs lol).
