With our first trip to the emergency room in Mexico, we learned a few things the hard way and made some costly mistakes that you can avoid. In this video, we're going to cover our experiences with the private healthcare system in Mexico, including where to go for healthcare as well as the quality of the doctors, facilities, and care itself. We'll also compare private healthcare costs depending on whether you are a tourist or legal resident, and the difference is shocking! If you're a tourist, definitely confirm your coverage abroad and/or purchase travel insurance if needed. Once upon a time in Florida, for a skin infection, I was charged $500 USD plus $100 USD for a cream with prescription only ... 5 years later in El Paso, Tx, the same infection appeared again, crossed the border, went into a pharmacy, doctor charged $10 USD plus $1 USD for the cream, worked like magic!!

Thanks for the great information. I’ve been to Cozumel, Mexico as a tourist several times prior to the Pandemic and I’ve recently begun thinking about possibly moving to Mexico. I now have some great information to research the cost of Global Health Insurance and good to know the dramatic difference in price for healthcare with and without a Residency Card.

Thank you for sharing your story, what an ordeal! Glad you are improving and that you have the lovely support of your partner. The care you received sounds like it was great and that is the most important thing. It seems like the cost savings would have been enormous with a residency permit in hand. With ear issues, even in the US, it can go both ways. It can be managed safely with conservative measures or we can refer to ENT who can intervene. The need for the ENT is always worth questioning just because a proceduralist is incentivized to perform a procedure in a cash-pay model. But this isn't always easy for the patient to make the call; but whenever possible running the case by a clinical expert if you have any doubts is a great idea. In this case of course everything went smoothly and it sounded like you got the right care!

Great video. Thank you for the detailed information. One thing I am looking forward to with life in Merida is the difference in healthcare cost. I got my temporary visa the same day I went in for the appointment. During the appointment she just chatted with me for a few minutes while they created the plastic card. Do you know why you have to wait for yours? I know for a while there they were actually out of the plastic that makes the cards.

Thank you! We just spent an amazing week in Merida! So many great day trips available from there as well! Regarding the physical card, you could pay $400USD more per person to expedite the entire process (same week INM appointment and same day plastic card), however we opted for the standard process (appointment within 30 days and card when INM could produce). In the meantime, we had a paper preview copy that was signed by INM. I believe they are working through the backlog from not having plastic as the wait is now down to two weeks from 3+ just a short time ago. So maybe it will return to same day or next day soon?

I’m moving to cdmx at the end of the year with residency. I would love a follow up on getting health insurance and costs. I’m at an age where risking no coverage is a bad idea in case something major happens.

Thank you! 🙏 Safety Wing confirms they pay directly to hospitals although our expectation if traveling in Mexico, you would pay out of pocket and then file a claim to get reimbursed. From our experience, we highly doubt the private hospitals will file on your behalf like in the US. But we’re not medical claims experts just know what to expect from our experience learning everything the hard way! I take out travel insurance. Travel guard. My friend was on a cruise and fell during a stop in cozumel. Compound fracture was 55,000.00 usd. Includes surgery. Social security denied the claim as it was out of the country. Cheap peace of mind. Thank you for the information.

The visa is the “sticker” you get in your passport at the consulate outside of Mexico (Part 1). When you enter Mexico, you then have to go apply for the resident card at the local immigration office (Part 2). I wonder I have my residence card issued in Yucatan, but if I go to hospital in Quintana Roo. Can I get the local insurance? Would they say that I am local residence from another area and reject to offer the discount ?

No the plan we have is national and they only ask for your RP card doesn’t matter which state

I am a bit confused (i havent' watched the whole video though) you mentioned you had your permanent residency card but didnt' have an address card? What is that? I have permanent residency and have never heard of the address card.

Never heard of an address card and never said anything about one. Sounds like you are confused. Our visit to the ER was in between our INM appointment and returning to pick up our permanent resident card, the latter which we needed to present for local rates. Simple as that.

550 bucks for ear infection is pretty pricey, that's what it would have cost you to go to urgent care here and paid out of pocket.

The ENT specialist at the hospital from an ER visit is very different than urgent care. The Mexican equivalent are the general doctors at the pharmacy and would be $5-10. Also, our point is how much less expensive (5X less) for the same ER visit as a permanent resident versus tourist…

I live in the USA, I was in the emergency room for chest pain 8 hours in the hospital $10,000 dls, the medical insurance paid $5,000 and I paid $5,000 dls last year I had a surgery $31,000dls I paid 3,000 my son had an appendix surgery $14,000 dollars

It is a private hospital I guess so they can charge however they want 🤷‍♂️ but on the plus side, even at 5x the local rate, it’s still way less expensive than the ER without insurance in the US!!

Yes, and it’s a private top tier hospital so for sure as expensive as it gets… BUT still way less expensive than any hospital in the US!!

The only detail is that the cost in Mexican hospitals is cheap if you are earning dollars in the United States, but if you are earning pesos living in Mexico it will not be as cheap as foreigners say.

Excellent point. Thank you for sharing. Average wages are not the same in the U.S. versus Mexico, although the Mexican minimum wage increased 20% for 2023!

That depends on the insurance you have, my grandfather used to work for the government and I had a good insurance because of him, my mother never paid a single peso for medicine or a surgery I had when I was 4, the only thing they wouldn’t cover for was bracers and oral surgeries which are not that expensive if you have a dental insurance. And once the government builds la mega farmacia all the medicines are supposed to be free for Mexico citizens

so there is a gringo and a local rate. That is understandable because most Mexicans are poor. But 550 aint bad for an ER visit. Plus they got you in quick. In the US you typically wait 4 hours in the ER before they see you

So there is not a gringo and a local rate, there is a tourist and a Mexican citizen/permanent resident (“local”) rate. And please keep in mind this is for private healthcare. There is a “free” public healthcare option that we did not cover in this video. But yes, we agree with you on the cost and experience (which is the point of our video!)-> an ER visit to a private hospital in Mexico typically provides a better experience at a lower cost than the US! We also found an entire dental tourism market here at our amazing dentist. Even paying out of pocket with no insurance, dental care is incredibly professional with the latest equipment and so much more affordable! Don’t even get me started on prescription medication and contact lenses!

@@TwoGayExpats Interesting, so any tourist would pay the higher rate even if they were from say Guatemala. I Lived in Bolivia in the early 90s and they clearly used the term gringo rate vs local for medical services at private facilities. Gringo rate was anyone who appeared to be white. You paid more and that was the way it was. The public healthcare in Bolivia was bad - really a last resort. Not sure what Mexico's is like probably better. It would be interesting if you did a video on the public experience!

Correct, but it’s Mexico, so everything is negotiable ;) My expectation is a Spanish speaker from Guatemala would be able to negotiate a better rate as a tourist. But if we were both permanent residents with ID, we would get the same/lowest rate possible.

Urgencias or the wing for emergencies at Hospiten, one of the best if not the best private hospital in Playa del Carmen. Highly recommend for emergency care in the Rivera Maya.

I get all my prescriptions free in the US & hospital visits as well the reason why the healthcare is so cheap there is because all the jobs don't pay anything that's why. There's always a trade off but I'd never want to move there not with all the cartel violence going on.

It’s very nice that you don’t have to pay for healthcare or prescriptions, but that’s not most people (including us)! The purpose of this video is to highlight the excellent private healthcare available in Mexico for those that can’t afford the US, the only country in the world from our understanding that you can go bankrupt for medical bills. Also, there is a free public healthcare option so your comment about local pay is irrelevant to the conversation. Also, the US has a declining life expectancy due to gun violence and drugs, so as you said, there’s a trade off. Not everyone thinks the US is the best place to live, and it’s certainly not a safe place to live if that’s your argument against Mexico! 🇲🇽 As an American, you are statistically more likely to be killed by a gun in the US than in Mexico per the US State Department’s own data.
