Many years ago I got sick in Durango and my husband took me to the emergency, and they took me in with no charge, and I visited the clinic for like two weeks, and still didn't charge me, they didn't give me some of the medications because they didn't have it but we bought it at pharmacy at a very reasonable price. I love Mexico we just bought a house and we're moving there this year!😍

I had IMSSI hate private healthcare they rip you off IMSS is the best care and there’s no profit motive so you get very good care. Have been to ER many times. Usually for heat stroke. Love to chat sometimes. I lived there 15 years and have dealt with just about every agency in Mexico.

We had our baby at a private hospital in Mexico, no insurance, and the total cost was still less than the insurance co-pays would have been in the USA. The service and experience was excellent, better than our experience in the USA. But there are some more expensive private hospitals in Mex that cost too much IMO.

Mexico has a good health system. Also has very good doctors. For tourists or people who do not have documents to live in Mexico, if the health problem is not serious, any private or public clinic can attend, with an affordable cost. Except for the IMSS or ISSSTE clinics, these clinics are only intended for workers who make their contributions. But if you want to go to big and luxury hospital is up to you.

Great information, just a few observations. By law, employers, as part of the benefits, are required to register their employees with the IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social). The way it works is that the employer pays the fee by taking a percentage of the employee's salary. Every time a worker needs medical attention, he needs to go to any IMSS clinic or hospital and you no longer need to pay anything for services or medicines. It works the same in the ISSSTE, that only for public workers. In the case of INSABI (Health Institute for Wellbeing), as you mentioned, it is for those who do not have social security, but it was also thought for temporary workers. INSABI was created a little less than two years ago and its function is that the clinics have the best facilities and medical equipment and free medicines. The current government is strengthening the public health system, which past neoliberal governments allowed it to deteriorate in order to privatize it.

This is a really particular area/question, but I was wondering about HIV medication coverage in Mexico. You affirmed what I had already learned that neither private insurance nor IMSS not only don't cover them, but as you alluded to, it's one of those pre-conditions that gets you kicked out of the system. From gay friends in Mexico I have heard that HIV medications are considered a human right in the country, available through various sites in major cities. One Con of IMSS you forgot to mention: If you get sick, you have to call your "gate-keeper" FIRST. (Either the IMSS consultant who does your renewals, or your private doctor who also does IMSS work, or at the very least has good IMSS connections.) Sick gringos should not try to navigate IMSS solo, because they will need excellent Spanish plus a solid knowledge of IMSS procedures and resources. For years and years, I did my own renewals, because the consultants charge so much. I missed the point. What you are paying for IS NOT renewal convenience but the fact that they are all ex-IMSS staff, who know the org inside out, which is what you actually need if you do get sick. Non-obvious, Paul, but important...

Why would tourists need an apostilled birth certificate instead of a passport? Do people go around with their passport "just in case"?

Before the pandemic México's president, Lopez Obrador was already working on a better medical system service for Mexicans, but now that the pandemic is under control he's back to work and opening brand new hospital with state-of-the-art equipment so far Nayarit, Colima, Sinaloa, Michoacan, and two more states. Do all Mexican citizens have access to healthcare? Mexico has achieved universal health coverage and its public healthcare is used by most Mexican residents. Despite this, the private healthcare sector has grown considerably and is driven by increasing disposable income, the growth of medical tourism, and a demand for higher-quality healthcare services. DE NADA!

The fact that Americans mostly don't know that Mexico has a universal heathcare system, while the US does not is one of the failures of our school system and our media. The fact that half of Americans are not embarrassed that Mexico and Canada are both able to do this, but the great USA cannot is a failure of humanity in America.

Come live in Mexico and you will quickly find out that you have to stand in line forever for this systems and the quality is not in any way compatible of that of the US.
