This video will help to understand the privileges and limitations of a Private Pilot from the CFI perspective. Remember that when you are going over all of this with your students, that you make sure that THEY understand what they can and can not do, after all, it is your responsibility as their instructor!

Limitations 61.113(i) (1) and (2) apply to private pilots with BasicMed but do they apply to pilots with regular medicals as well? I have heard instructors saying that these limitations affect all private pilots.

61.113(i) (1) and (2) only applies to those who operate under part 67 and do not hold a medical. It does not apply to those who operate an aircraft with a current and valid medical.

You incorrectly said more than 400 hours at 16:30. 14 CFR 91.146 specifies at least 500 hours

Yeh, he did said it "400 hours" but it is a bit obvious that it was a mistake.

Hey Todd, thanks for another great video! I have one question for you. Do you have any examples of charity flights? Are we talking about emergency evacuation operations or am I off base with that? Just wanna have an idea to give to a student. Thanks for your time!

Hi Seth! That is a great question and the answer can be found in 14 CFR 91.146. That chapter defines a charitable event as "Charitable event means an event that raises funds for the benefit of a charitable organization recognized by the Department of the Treasury whose donors may deduct contributions under section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code (26 U.S.C. Section 170)." If you are flying for an organization during the emergency evacuation that meets all of those many requirements in 14 CFR 91.146, then that would definitely apply. Hope this helps.

@@ToddShellnuttCPC Thanks for getting back with me! That makes sense. And if I understand correctly, a private pilot who meets the requirements of 91.146 may conduct those flights and the flight time, and any pro-rata reimbursement or compensation is considered legal. However, a private pilot who only has 200hrs and does not meet the 500hr requirement cannot participate even if he/she is not receiving compensation or hire. The flight time could be considered "compensation" and therefore illegal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my current understanding.

How does the FAA enforce these for hire limitations? and how do they know in the first place these limitations are being violated? For example. If my parents were to go on a vacation and ask me to fly them to a certain destination 3 hours away for example; I fly them , come back home, after a week or two when their vacation is done I go pick them up and fly back. They pay me for the operation expense plus some; let just say all communications was done via phone call. How would the FAA know this was happening? The only reason I can come up with is that they post on social media "my PPL son/daughter flew us here" or I self report that I flew these hours in particular for hire. I would appreciate some insight thanks,

That is a great question. The first and foremost way that the FAA finds out about illegal operations is by someone calling in to report it. The FAA has a dedicated hotline for anyone to call and report it. www.faa.gov/initiatives/safecharteroperations/contact-us It is very rare that an FAA inspector actually catches a pilot in the act. Actions such as flying a family member somewhere happen each and every day, and the FAA knows it. They also are able to tell whether an act is malicious or unintentional. It is never a good idea to try and determine in advance how and what an FAA inspector is thinking. Oh, and if they paid you over $600 in a year for these hypothetical "services", best to not let the IRS know that either!!
