Excellent video. I found that a home flight simulator was a great tool to practice with. You can get more time looking at the instruments, following procedures/check lists, amd making radio calls. It helped me get to my first solo quicker.

I will take a moment and fully support this channel. I have actually downloaded the entire series onto my iPad and when I’m flying commercially I watch the videos. Whenever I have downtime I’m watching the videos. Bottom line, the content is excellent and summarized in such a way that makes it easy to understand. While I have paid for an online ground school (gold seal) I find some of their instruction lacking and go to RU-vid and channels like this to fill in the gaps. Thank you so much for your hard work in this!

I got mine early 80’s while full time college student and paying as I went. I skipped ground school and read the books and passed written with 98. I used high school trig and vectors to work all the nav problems. I think the 152 plus instructor was $36 per hour and back then, that was a lot of money. I passed check ride first time. To me the boring ground reference maneuvers were probably the most important aspect as you learn how wind and ground speed relate. You pick up the radio work as you go along. I learned out of a controlled airport and that helped. I made myself do solo XC into larger controlled airports so that I wouldn’t be afraid later. It was a good solid education with many practical applications outside flying. I went on to own two airplanes and wasn’t afraid to go anywhere. I had some tense situations but handled them. I always followed the rules and was cautious and never hesitated to call it off and drive instead. The rules are for a reason. Even following them, you will get into situations. The ticket is really just a license allowing you to learn how to fly a plane legally.

Getting my Pilots license was very rewarding, stressful but rewarding. i worked at my flight school as a dispatcher/line guy and got a 30% discount which helped a lot, not only that I networked my butt off while I was at my flight school met so many awesome people and mad friends with cfis who helped me study along the way. I then went on to get my ifr and then commercial followed by multi engine! It took me about 7 years ONLY because I paid out of pocket and worked at the same time. Those of you out there stressing on how you are going to pay just know that it can be done with patience and a lot of dedication! Wishing you all the very best of luck and success! I did most of my flight training from March-May 2021. Did my Checkride on my 17th Birthday. I only had 46 Hours, I was probably ready to do it about 42 or 43 but I changed from a C150 to a 172 for the Checkride due to max useful load. A few things that helped me to get it done efficiently: flying 2-3 times per week, completing my written exam before my first solo (it vastly helped to increase my confidence and understanding of piloting), doing most of my training in a simple 150, choosing a good instructor with 10+ years of experience (he instructs mainly as a side gig), and doing a mock Checkride before the official one. I only spent $8000 when it was all said and done. Unfortunately since then, prices have skyrocketed and the 150 I was using is no longer available. The cheapest option in my city costs $54 more than I was originally paying before, and now the instructor rate is $15-20 more. Although I don't mind the Instructor rate going up so much, the spike in rental costs has been a major turn off in pursuing my Instrument Rating. I have been hoping prices decrease as fuel costs go down, but I've yet to see it. Hopefully I can really start to fly more frequently again next year.
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining Год назад
Yeah, it’s unbelievable how much prices have gone up. It’s tough for anyone to be able to afford them right now! You had a very similar situation to a student I trained who was training in a Cessna 172, and was ready to check, but moved and the only plane available in the area was a Cherokee. Thanks for the comment!

At this point, I realize I will have to pay out of pocket for each flight lesson, materials, etc. and this means it will take me a lot slower than most who have the thousands upfront. I am enrolling in Sporty's Online Ground School this weekend, and have already passed my Medical Exam. I did not get a discovery flight but I did have my first lesson with a CFI, and it was not enjoyable. Currently looking for someone else to be instructed by. Could you make a video discussing the difference between a flight school, flight clubs with instruction, and find independent flight instructors with some pointers on where to find and reach out to them? I really thrive on self study, so I want to go for a part 61, but there isn't a single part 61 school within even 2 hours of me! Just read all the comments - I noticed that nobody mentions buying a 140/150/Champ to learn in and then selling it for pretty much what you paid for it. Obviously you need at least some cash but I sold my late model 4Runner to get an 85 HP 1947 Champ to train in and build hours and it hasn't depreciated a dollar. Once you own the plane you are profoundly motivated to finish your PPL. The key is to buy an AC with a low to mid-time engine that hasn't sat around and you are less likely to have major mechanical surprises. (Notice I only said less but the buy/learn/sell strategy can really work.) I have zero regrets.

My second instructor at about 16 hours said stop here I'm getting out and I want you to do 3 Take Off and 3 Full stop landings, then park the plane and come in side. I refused because I had just made 3 bad landings. Next week I had another Club Instructor. After an hour or two hw asked me What the hell are you scared of You know how to fly. Next time you'll SOLO. If you can put the hours closer together schedule 2 or 3 hours per week, Weather may eliminate some. OH I was not the quickest learner but after 26 years of not any PIC I still can answer almost all aeronautical questions and I've used several symulator (Pro) and nailed the ILS approach to Miniums each time.

Another great vid. But one point on the solo Xcountry. You say that it's the student's fault if they don't hit the 5hrs with the old standards of "One short, and one Long Xcountry". I feel it's directly the instructor's fault since most CFI's will tell you what airports they would like you to go to. But on that point... let's face it... another short Xcountry will only benefit the student even if it does cost an extra $200. I remember in my original training... flying a C150/152... it was EASY to hit the 5hr's since it flew so slow. BUT, those same flights in a Warrior or a DA40 take a lot less time. Regardless... another great vid. As a pilot who has been out of flying for 28 years... they have been very helpful.
@FreePilotTraining

Thanks! Yeah, some instructors are very careful over where they send their students cross country. I like to let the students pick them discuss why they may or may not want to go there. It gets them thinking through the planning on their own
@PghGameFix
@PghGameFix Год назад
@@FreePilotTraining I would agree with that. AND, in the 90's that's what my CFI did. I think the place I'm flying out of now just wants to watch for a few things, and are supposed to take students to the airports in question on the initial dual Xcountry. (We have some class B close, and some very busy uncontrolled airports) I'm getting treated a little different since I'm a returning pilot. I lost so much over the years... I don't know why I was gone so long. (Having a lot of fun getting back into it)

Love your videos. Was wondering the DPE, who are they accountable to? I have training for 30 years and one thing I have learned is if you are not accountable to someone, you will lose perspective and a power trip takes over if not monitored. So who are these people accountable to? How do I know and trust the system to know they are doing their job and not asking questions because of a personal issue or a bad day ànd can I do something about it?if it is a power trip. What do you do? You just spent 1k?
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining 5 месяцев назад
They are accountable to the FAA. They must follow the Airman Certification Standards. If they don’t, they may not be a DPE too long. If they aren’t using the ACS, you could talk to the local FSDO

I had thousands of hours on a simulator before getting my actual private pilots license and I think because of that it’s why I was actually done and completed in about 35 hours. The final five hours was just going over stuff getting ready for checkride preparedness. Most people that complete their training that quick or soon to be geniuses and I assure you I am not. I was a straight D/F student in school and that was grades from actually trying. There’s ways to get it a jump ahead on this stuff if you know what to study and also how to utilize it in a simulator to assist in your training. I made it through all my flight training a year ago and spent exactly $10,200. And that includes monies I had to spend for ForeFlight, a new tablet , medical exam, aviation calculator (CX3) and check ride.
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining Год назад
That’s awesome! I have noticed a huge difference in my students with simulator experience and none. I got my PPL with 49 hours exactly (checkride included), and I have been amazed to find out how rare that actually is. The national average is about 65 hours.

@@FreePilotTraining Yea I focused on what was being taught and tried to project myself into the cockpit while at home. Once in the plane again I tried to bring myself back to the laptop at the comfort of home while keeping that level of cognitive and special awareness about. Something about it just clicked. I was able to get the training done in that short of time while still making a fairly poor 74 on the written exam. Everything that I did poor on the exam was looked over heavily (mainly weather theory and regulations) and eventually aced my check ride. Anyone can make it work if they put in the work. 👍

With someone of my background, do you think I could pull off getting my PPL quicker having a good baseline?
@FreePilotTraining

You’re definitely going to find some things easier than a lot of people. How quickly you get it is really going to depend on how regularly you can fly because of weather or your schedule. If you have a good baseline of knowledge, you may pick the flying up quicker than most because you don’t have to focus as much on the other stuff. So in short, I’d say there is a really good chance it will be faster for you

Correction, it is most satisfying, rewarding and expensive thing you can do with your life right now. I remember starting my trailer training in the late 70s. A Cessna 152 with instructor was about $49 an hour dual. Today a private pilot license can cost well over $15,000 to obtain. Just for a Cessna 172 rental it runs about $200 an hour now. And that is a solo price. Add $65 an hour for an instructor. Being out of it for a while,for me to get an IPC it has cost me near what the instrument rating add on cost me to get! I know times have changed but with Avgas 5, 6 and seven dollars plus a gallon and the cost of insurance it’s not the inexpensive hobby it used to be. It’s gotten back to being a sport of the well to do.

@@FreePilotTraining Remember the five forces of flight. Lift, drag, thrust, gravity and of course money. All I know is it will never stop costing. If you are going to be a professional pilot it is well worth the investment. I received my commercial pilot single multi engine instrument rating. Never pursued CFI because at the time of the 90s and so forth there was no real money to be made to survive on. Now of course it’s just for fun because of age and the difficulties in obtaining a third class medical at this point. When you start taking certain medications it causes you to have to get a “Special Issuance” medical. Still can get it but a lot of paperwork annually.
