It’s actually nice that Francis has that “performance obsession” as Jimmy calls it, it adds something to the conversation
@paulhaselton
@paulhaselton 10 месяцев назад
Some people, myself included, are motivated to cycle for the sensation of speed which is *just* as valid a justification to cycle as any other. Performance oriented products, ideas and mindsets absolutely have their place in cycling. I really want to enjoy this podcast as I thoroughly enjoy everything else that Francis, Jimmi and Emily do and create but this is starting to feel a little too awkward a conversation to be eavesdropping on. If I'm having a conversation with someone and they say "I don't care", as much as Jimmi has been in recent episodes, thats usually my social cue to change the topic of conversation pretty pronto. I fully appreciate it's done to introduce an alternative viewpoint but I don't think it'd quite having the desired effect. I dont want to be the harbinger of negativity but feel this is probably worth mentioning for the sake of (hopefully useful) feedback. Regardless of all that, please keep up the good work, I look forward to every upload.

Totally agree with you. When talking about the airless tire being possibly too slow to be an all year tire, Jimmy scoffed as if it’s irrelevant. What’s the point of riding a road bike if you don’t care about optimal performance?

@@BevandEdMusic Yes I agree, but for those types of cycling you have different types of bikes. If we’re talking road bikes, like racing or even endurance bikes, then performance is certainly important. I think Jimmy and Francis weren’t on the same page here. Winter is a great time to go to the gym and work on strength. Strengthening core and working on flexibility is great for cycling. Working the leg machines to increase strength and doing lighter upper body workouts is also very helpful. You can save the cycling sessions for days when the weather is good. Variety during the year keeps you from getting stale and keeps you motivated to start training on the road come spring. In very snowy areas cross country skiing and snow shoeing will keep you very fit.

Those airless tires are basically like wrapping big springs around your wheels, which means you may be able to get them in different stiffnesses to represent different tire pressures that you like. Really cool idea.

Thank you for the good job and passion. The discussion around the tires was getting on my nerves. I think performance matters, always. Even for a city bike, you want a degree of efficiency. If the bike is crap, the experience is not agreable. All my familly is using bikes, my wife is going to the train sation with a 35 old 'allround' bike and if the bike is crap and slow, she'll not like it because the effort will be to much. So for example, I have equiped the bike with "old but descent alu road wheels" I had in stock from my old rim brake bikes and gp5000 all season tires that I bought to a friend at 20€ each. It's making a hudge difference to the previous set-up (heavy wheels and crap tires). She never had a puncture. I don't see the point of buyindg "solid slow crap tires" to make the experience less enjoyable ...

Most people who ride bikes are fine with going slow. If we want to normalize riding bikes as a thing we should do instead of taking a car, more bike companies need to realize the market is THERE for regular people on a bike - on bike trails, on errand runs about town. And more things should prioritize comfort and large gear range so that more people ride.

Riding in winter here in Sweden means studded tyres and a lot of clothing. This is going to be my second winter here and my first with a 28km commute. I'm not planning on taking the bike every day, but hoping I can maintain 3 days a week as a minimum. Last winter was fine, though a learning experience. One tumble on ice (despite studs) and lessons learned. Down to minus 10 is fine. Below that is a little unpleasant, no matter what clothing you're wearing. The British winter is just horribly wet. A very different weather, punctuated by brief periods of black ice and horrizontal snow. Not fun to train in.

Problem with airless tires on bikes is always going to be that rider/bike weight is always going to be highly differential which highly impacts ride quality. Manufacturers would have to make different tires and sell them based on weight categories to address this. Not sure how scalable is this.
@Frostbiker
@Frostbiker 10 месяцев назад
It really depends on how hard it is to install new treads on the airless tire. If it's relatively simple then you can sell them separately, which avoids having to stock all possible combinations of stiffness and tread pattern.

Fully agreed on the 'have events in May' for winter training. I'll have had the Fred Whitton 3 years running to prep for, as well as my 'Cycle the Nation' challenge in June this year, and 2024 will have the Dragon Ride on top too, Zwift is essential for me, as is good winter gear for club rides at the weekend if it's not awful (in the Lake District - rare) so I can get the hours in and some decent 'hill' training. I've been up to 5 hours on it - but usually 35 -100k rides unless I really need the hours. All I want to do is ride my bike too - and don't need anywhere near £100k to do it!

Jean 'cutoffs' (shorts from full length jeans with most of the leg-length cut off) are excellent for cycling if worn with padded 'liners'. If you have a leather saddle, where all the seams on the cutoffs come together under the perineum can chafe the saddle, so use a dab of saddle dressing (Brooks Proofide or similar) on the jeans at that spot. As well as being a lot tougher protection than Lycra for shorts, jean shorts have *pockets*...what an incredible invention...so that you can carry things like keys and money etc just like a normal person on your rides.

In winter I ride outside on the mountain bike on the wet days or if there is a high chance ice on the road. On the road bike on the dry sunny days, and we do have them right through winter. I reluctantly get on the turbo maybe 4 or 5 times a year if I've run out of light or if it's super windy perhaps. Luckily it doesn't get super cold here just around zero at its lowest. To stay motivated I do some sort of training plan every winter, I don't really care about the training goals. It's just a way to have some set riding I'm supposed to do on set days, also to have prescribed rest so I don't over do it. I find overdoing it is more of a risk than losing motivation to be honest. Riding around here ( foothills of the Pyrenees) is pretty fun even in winter.

I once had a Plettenberg brushless motor, the size of roughly a large BB, that would do 1.5kw for 3 minutes on a 7.2 volt battery and a specific controller, that is 1500 watts in the size of half a red bull can. (This was for radio controlled vehicles back in 2005.) So I certainly believe that a 200 watt tiny motor/controller/battery would be no issue these days. Some shops can retrofit "seat-tube motors" to road-bikes for older or injured people, battery goes in a water bottle. I think for that target market it is nice. The capable (this includes me) should just pedal. :P Doubt this sees use in any pro teams, as it is too easy to detect these days. :)

Denim is great for commuting. If you have to crash, they offer decent road rash protection. If you are wearing lycra it's only a half step better than naked.

Main winter cycling tip I think you missed is: ride flat routes. Hills are killers in winter because you can't control your temperature, building up heat on the climbs and then freezing yourself on the downs. Plus going fast down hills when wet cold and dark is more hazardous.

About undetectable motors,, we only think about electric. But we have lots of ways to propel something further. While combustion engines would be really loud and hard to hide, thermal cameras will also detect anomalies like bearings without proper lubrication AND electric motors since they also generate heat. But if you build the frame to hold copious amounts of pressure and then use 3 thousnd psi of air to hit some blades like an air tool? Just redirect the exhaust through some baffles and no noise is made, and no heat is created. Even easier, a long co2 canister on the downtube.

Put your turbo in a cold space thats unheated like a garage + single descent fans .... i start off with layers on and strip off .... plus sime people can loose up to 25% power on fixed turbo 😁

Tannus makes a 26x1.75 tire that is vastly more confortable than the 700c alternatives, albeit having the most rolling resistance i've ever encountered (solid or pneu).

Why is Jimmy always so negative with the riding fast and have fast and comfortable tyres? The whole definition of a road bike is to be fast!! If he wants to ride slow with his grandparents groups he can do whatever he likes or, OR, hear me out he can ride a hybrid bike or commuter bike, way more comfortable. Why he has to sh*t in other's preferences??? If you have gp 4 seasons you can get the benefits of a puncture proof tyre all year round and the added grip.

Just a clarification, Femke was not caught riding the bike with a motor during a race, the bike was found in her pit area during a race, which was a huge violation.

The Metl tires have a good FAQ now on kickstarter. 700x35C equivalent. They are aiming for 32C - 38C. More of a Hybrid tread they said.

Winter riding sucks. just coming out of winter here in NZ and man I'm unfit! Even though I've been keeping up riding, only been able to manage ~5hrs a week outside due to weather cold and dark. Although some of my friends have ridden twice as much as me but I'm obviously just soft. But have lost about 40watts! Going to take ages to get my fitness back :(

Re: motor doping. I have thought for a while that it could be possible to energise a cog on the rear derailleur. You have a battery for the di2 already there. I just think it could be possible especially for a micro boost extra 20w or so just to make a small but significant difference

I’d have thought that any motor system small enough to fit on a jockey wheel would not only be incredible weak, but far better placed inside a BB or hub.

They had e-road bike racing in europe somewhere. As I was watching some stage of something. can't remember what now but they had these e-bike road riders just finishing this "fun" event where anyone could enter up some big climb. Pretty sure they were e-road bikes but might have been just any e-bikes, but the race was on the road.

Some years ago there was an i think austrian manufacturer Vivax, that sold tiny motors that fit into a seattube. Very simple setup: they had conical bevel gears on a sleeve that fits a standard shimano 24mm crank axle. Could produce around 80-100w and was surprisingly quiet, if mounted correctly. So motor doping isnt very hard to do, especially in amateur sports, where there are no checks with thermal cameras. Iwouldn't be surprised if there were more people who at least tried it or still using them in races.

Also there would be the option of a transversal flux machine, yes thats the name of it! It basically is a magnatic motor that uses coils and magnets, like used in high speed trains. Lightweight (the wheel manufacturer) has already shown a demo bike called Velocité with coils in the chainstays and magnets in the wheel, that can produce long term 500w!

I've had that neck thing. It was a muscle spasm and it was caused by me doing a big stretch as I woke up. I would put my hands behind my head and interlock my fingers and stretch really hard. Because my fingers were interlocked and I was half asleep I didn't realise I was pulling me head off me bleedin shoulders. So moral of the story don't ever interlock your fingers when you put your hands behind your head for your morning stretch

When it comes to the point where the local council start gritting the roads I will have already switched to my winter bike or paid a sub to the local gym which is literally less than 5 mins away from me or if i havent done that yet or dont want to - I can go out for walk up the local canal for an hour that takes me about an hour to get there before sitting down for a coffee and a chicken or kebab wrap before walking back.

I had high hopes for the SMART tires and signed up for their mailing list. I was excited to be among the first to order some, but the price is absolutely insane. I'm surprised so many people are supporting them at that price, especially not knowing if they ride like crap or not. Oh well, I hope things go well and they can reduce the price as time goes on.
