Hello Skaters! Welcome back! Today I am doing something a little crazy, I am going to try and skate in rental skates! I haven't skated in rentals since I was a kid, but two weeks ago I gave you all my top tips for getting started in the sport, and my first tip was to ditch the rentals and get your own skates. I thought it would be a fun experiment to see just what I could actually do in rental skates. I hope you enjoy this!

See if there is a reputable skate fitter in your area! Your rink or coaches at your rink will probably have great recommendations if you ask. Skate sizes are very different from street shoe sizes, so having someone fit you is the best bet for picking the right size and a supportive boot in your budget. Skates are not cheap (my first pair was ~$170 for a rec level skate. The skates I've had for the last 1.5 years were $700, but they have held up like champs through 6 day a week practice), but they are so worth it. It's the only tool you really need for skating, so they are well worth the investment if you plan to skate more than once or twice a year and want to learn anything more advanced than forward stroking and swizzles.

When my son started out, as you may remember, he spent so much time on the ground! We calculated how much rentals would cost over the year (at only 3 visits to rink/week, because you’ve got to practice! 😊)- and we determined that entry level skates were more affordable. Then, once he put those on, he was able to do all the moves he’d been trying so hard to do in rentals. That was money WELL SPENT!!!

I spent exactly one session on rentals, because ice skating was love at first glide. In less than a week, I found your beginner skate recommendation video, enrolled in Learn to Skate, and was impatiently awaiting my new Jackson Freestyles’ arrival. While it was a mildly scary commitment at the time - I couldn’t predict how long my interest would endure - I’ve had ZERO regrets for ditching rentals almost immediately. Bad skates not only hamper skill progression, but their awkward-at-best fit actively discourages extended ice time. I suspect my love for skating would have rapidly waned if I had delayed purchasing appropriate equipment!

THIS!! 1000% THIS. I have nightmares because of rental skates. I also got my skates during my first LTS session, but it took so long to get them, I had to do the test in rentals and it was so sad!! But i looooooooooooove my skates. Like madly in love!! it has made skating 1 million times better!

That was interesting. The other way round would be, too: What if an average but ambitious skater being used to rentals was put in professional skates? What would be his/her immediate improvements? Would he/she recognise a difference and make use out of it?
@zeborahnz
@zeborahnz Год назад
I feel a bit vindicated that you noticed the rentals were way back on the heels: when I first got my own skates the first thing I noticed was that my weight was way *forward* from what I expected. It instantly made it a bit easier to go backwards (at least, once the blades had dulled just enough that I didn't feel like I was sticking to the ice!) but it took me weeks to really get used to rebalancing my weight. I definitely wouldn't be keen to go back now!

Speaking of dull blades…my skates have been dull for over a month. Since the pro shop is a good few hrs away from the rink, my other coach once a month gathers boots that need sharpening and takes them to the shop. Unfortunately, when my skates started to slip, coach just got back from the shop. So yeah…been skating on dull flat blades for a while and it isn’t fun. Yesterday, crashed trying to do 3 turns and power pulls, cross steps etc. Worst was power pulls…I literally did a dropkick and landed on my hip…bruised and swollen really bad that I can’t even sit straight right now because one half of my butt is bigger than the other…

I have many times skated in public and have seen kids sliding with no control. I would tell them to get new skates. The reason they do not sharpen is because when kids fall they put hands out and sharp skates cut fingers etc.

This video is amazing! I have Harlicks that were gifted to me by my parents when I graduated college. They wanted me to always be able to return to the ice. I’m now 51yrs old, and I still use them. My teenager has recently shown interest in skating and has been doing public skate in rentals. Today she is going to the rink without me and asked to use my skates (we wear the same shoe size). I showed her this video to prepare her for the difference she might feel. I’m curious to hear how it goes. After today, she may want her own pair of skates! 😂

In fact, I know someone already pitched the idea for you to try on hockey skates, but I'd honestly find is super interesting to see how you handled some ice hokey techniques with a hockey stick and puck. As always, thank you so much for taking the time and effort to create these lessons for us. I once happened to find myself at an empty ice rink (I was there for a different reason, I didn't even know there was a rink). So I rented some skates, got some socks and gloves from lost&found, and off I went on the ice. Holy guacamoly. I fell down within a second of entering the rink because as usual, I wanted to do these two-foot curves to feel the ice, and there literally were no edges to be found on these skates, so off they went from below me and down I went to kiss the ice in a not so pleasant manner. I went back to the room with the skates and tried to find some with at least a trace of an edge, but no such luck. I finally managed to do a few three turns before getting blisters after 20 minutes. I haven't gone near rental skates ever since 😀

I always find these rental skate videos so entertaining. I used to skate as child and then again as a pre-teen, then didn't skate at all until i had kids (and then that was in rental skates only - and I think in the past 25 years I had been skating only 4 times). I am now 58 and got new Jackson skates for Christmas and I'm still having a hard time getting my "ice legs" back but at least I have an edge to stay upright LOL. It's been 45 years since I had good skates!

My ice skating club told me I don’t need to buy my own skates till I pass level 4 as it’s not necessary, and I don’t exactly have the money to anyway. But I definitely agree that rental skates suck when your really trying just gotta save a bit and then I’ll hopefully have a better time.

So interested to see you do this! I was recently away from home (a long, long way away from home) for a month and didn’t take my skates as I knew there would only be one possible opportunity to skate. I did make it to a rink, put on the rentals and immediately looked like you when hobbling to the ice, then stepping on and tentatively starting to glide. The blades were straight, no rockers, no edges and what I called “pretend” toe picks. I tried to do a tiny spin and nearly ended up with my face on the boards. It was a measure of my determination (desperation) to skate that I went around a few times with both feet on the ice. It certainly explains the way the beginners look out on the ice, bent over and knock kneed. 😊

This makes me feel so much better! I do a ton of artistic roller skating so I know where my edges are and how to skate well(at least on roller skates. 😂) I took my family ice skating for the fun of it and I felt like I had never skated before. I felt like all my effort went into keeping my legs from sliding out from under me. I normally skate 2-3 hours at a time but two laps around in those rentals was exhausting. There was no edge and any time I tried to push, my foot would slip across the top of the ice. Now I want to try ice skating in some better skates!

When I first thought about switching from hockey to figure skates, I signed up for some group ice dancing classes. I tried rental skates, but they were so bad, after two lessons I went back to my hockey skates and completed the classes in those. Didn't try more classes until I got my own figure skates. Fun fact, once I got used to my figure skates, skating in my hockey skates became terrifying because I felt like I was going to fall over backwards and bash my head.
@CoachJulia

I have skated in hockey skates before, many years ago. They were pretty frightening because of that very reason! Without the back extending out behind the boot, they do feel like you are just going to fall backwards!

@@CoachJulia maybe you should do a video where you learn to play hockey. Just make sure to wear a helmet! I know people who switch between hockey skates and figures, but I don't know how they do it. It was a challenge switching to figure skates after years of hockey skates because my weight was always forward - and that's not good when you have picks!!🤣😂🤣

This was entertaining! I am really surprised that people are able to skate in those at all. I think rinks should sharpen more often and teach patrons proper blade care! A little over a year ago my skates had broken down to the point where I was having serious ankle pain when I tried to skate for any length of time. I'd ordered replacements (when I bought the first pair I was measured for both Jackson and Reidell so I knew the correct size) but they hadn't arrived yet. I wondered if I should either "tough it out" with my broken down skates or go with rentals for class. To test it, I did a public skate session with rentals. It was bad. Really, really bad. I couldn't skate in them. I kept catching toe picks. Edges were a disaster and.... well, once around the rink and I was done. d. o. n. e. done. Ended up toughing it out for that one last class on the old skates before the new ones arrived and I got the new blades mounted and sharpened (which was a whole other issue with re-learning to skate, going from Reidell Motion skates with their "Cosmos" blade to Jackson Premier Fusions with Coronation Ace blades).
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia Год назад
Roughing it out in the old skates was the right choice. And it is always an adjustment when you get a new pair, especially if you are changing the boot or blade style. But the upgrade is almost always worth it in the long run.

My first time I skated on ice in 1995 I rented at the outdoor rink in Chicago. It cost 2 dollars at the time. I think I rented about 3 times before they were ok.. I didn't fall. I found a pair at the thrift shop for 2 dollars so then I only had to pay entrance fee.. I've had those 2 dollar skates even today. I sharpened them 17 years ago and they were great but I never sharpened them deeply & so I went to sharpen these in December and I got them sharpened wrong and I couldn't really get anything good going on. I was 3 weeks in thinking there was something wrong. So I skipped skating and went to the professional skate shop here in Stockholm (same 2 dollar skates from Chicago) soft leather older than me but a chromium steel MK blade.. I'm going to use them in an hour.. They are sharpened deep as the lady there said "trust me, you NEED this"
