Pro Gluing Method For Furniture Repair!

Woodworkers and furniture owners are going to encounter an end grain split. The challenge is getting glue deep into the split. Use this simple and effective method to get the adhesive where you need it. Glue is better "pulled" into the split rather than "pushed".
EXTRA TIP - if the wood has finish on it, excess glue can be wiped off with a damp towel. If the wood is raw, make sure to mask it before hand. Glue this is dampened and wiped off the raw wood will affect the ability of the wood to accept stain and finish and can only be addressed by sanding off - something that can be undesirable. Lesson - the earlier in the woodworking process you glue up the split, the better.

Very clever. My only concern would be if the glue got into the vacuum and gummed up the works. Will that happen?

Mr. Dirt Farmer, Thank you for this tip! Had a Cabinet door with a hairline crack of about 5 inch length that we lived with for 10+years. Of course it was the door to the garbage bin under the sink and is opened and closed the most times. The lower hinge recently failed. Used your technique to fix the hairline crack, patience is a virtue in allowing the glue and vacuum to get the glue where into the crack. Re-installed the door with Blum Soft Close Hinges and my wife is happy and that is all that counts! Great Tip-Thanks!

You're a genius! I was a dental assistant and I was thinking of useing floss or blasting glue into the crack by blowing through a thin straw and pushing it down. Could you water down the glue to get it to flow easier? Or would that weaken the hold,
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay Год назад
Nema - glad you found this to be helpful. Floss will work, I wouldn't dilute the glue as it reduce its strength. Using suction allows you to "pull" the glue, instead of "pushing" it - which doesn't work so well usually! Best, DFJ

This is a brilliant and fantastic idea! I will definitely be using this trick for some of my woodworking. Do you have any recommendations for fixing a hairline crack that's not 100% the way through? I've been carving a piece for a while now and stupidly left it clamped for a day and a section split. It's a very thin crack so it's hard to find anything small enough to push the glue in. I was tempted to leave it but it's bad enough that if I don't glue it, the section will likely break off. Since its not all the way through on most of it, I'm not sure the vacuum trick would work, at least not for all of it. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much!!

Have a split on the end of a 3/4 inch thick shelf. With a chunk missing. The split is not thru the 3/4 inch shelf. Split is 2 1/2 inches long. The Chunk missing is 1 /16 inches The previous owner put to large a screw, and did not center it properly into the side grain of the shelf. I want to fill in the the missing chunk, and screw hole. Like it is a new piece of wood, and re drill the hole. The chunk is toward the inside of the shelf. Which is a good thing. Instead of on the side ,and end.

I'm getting ready to do a similar repair, and the crack I'm fixing is about 12 inches long. I'm expecting (hoping) that the tape will help get a better/more directed distribution of the glue along the entire crack. I know it won't be surgical precision, but even if it just helps minimize a little bit of the vacuum bleed-over it should help.
@gracefaith3772
@gracefaith3772 3 года назад
Ingenious. How to apply this technique on a small crack on the guitar soundboard??
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 3 года назад
GRACEFAITH - there are only two ways that I know of to get adhesive into a small crack like that. Both of those methods need a low viscosity glue to work. One is to inject it into the crack with a small needle, and the other is to place the glue on the surface of the crack and then create an air-tight plastic bag around the areas and then use a vacuum device to create negative pressure (a vacuum) to draw the glue into the small crack. I hope this helps! Best Regards, DFJ
@gracefaith3772
@gracefaith3772 3 года назад
@@DirtFarmerJay can a syringe with small needle suck up titebond and be aspirated ? the vacuum method won't work because there is not enough space to put a vacuum cleaner inside the sound hole.

Yes it will, however, depending on the type of joint, is there isn't a good amount of "long" grain" on both sides of the joint, "end" grain glued together won't be that strong. I hope this helps! Best, DFJ
@CcCc-qk2fb

will the vacuum suck the glue too deep to the tube of it?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 2 года назад
Cc Cc, not likely. Use the glue sparingly so it is drawn into the crack and coats the sides. It is better to start with less glue and add more if needed than it is to flood the joint and have glue in your vacuum nozzle. If you do get glue in the nozzle, simply wash/wipe it off with a moist paper towel. Thanks for watching our video! Best, DFJ
