So how about the cartridge alignment using the protractor project supply and an explanation of this critical point of set up. Noticed the scales were not calibrated prior to use. Thought fitting a 2m Bronze would have covered these items.
i just bought one of these for a modern table to play with im waiting on a sumiko amythist to arrive , my other 2 turntables are Empire 398 and 498 they were my fathers he worked at empire scientific 61-69 i have a bunch of brand new cartridges and stylus and sleds i found in a cigar box in my attic recently . I can not believe how great these old turntables sound on my modern integrated amps and speakers .
Another great episode. Still haven't been able to figure out why there's such ubiquitous love for Pro-Jects. What am I missing? Side note: would love to see one where you talk about your favorite p-mounts. I've been tempted to explore that route but haven't heard too much about the carts that are still produced for them.
i only currently own One P-mount (technics SL-QD33) i do LOVE IT and it has a good sound, but it has 2 problems the antiskate is not adjustable and it pulls to the outside hard enough to fall off most 45's when repeating or starting automatically (not a big deal manual is a thing lol), it has a 60hz hum that even grounding only lowers but does not remove, i even bought a new cartridgetrying to fix it replacing the PT200 on it with an AT92E (a VERY GOOD cart in my opinion) it sounded even better but still humming, so there are some REALLY good sounding carts available and pretty cheap comparably, if only i could get rid of that HUM, it is not a problem with all P-mount turntables but cousins of this table i have owned do seem to have this problem (it could be aging caps, resistors, or shielding) and i don't know if it can be fixed but i would use it TONS more if i could get that hum to GO AWAY

I've been looking a Technics quartz-locked p-mounts from time to time because they're cheaper on the used market (and obviously due to the convenience and performance benefits from the pre-aligned cartridge and quartz-locking respectively). Too bad to hear that there may be hum issues.
@@mf1932 they are still good turntables really good to start off with on too cheap sturdy and with good sound and some upgrade possibilities even play warped records that might be hard to play on half inch mount tables, and if found cheap enough (estate sales are good places to look mine was $10) i would still recommend even up to $40 or $50, or if you can find higher end models i am sure there would be no hum. it is still very enjoyable over all i have had it for at least 7 years and will not part with it, and It was my main table for most of that time. But then i found my SL-Q2 and it is DEAD silent and so is my Pioneer PL-518 they are both Half inch mount BEHEMOTHS with removable head shells and that is where you end up eventually the cartridge possibilities are ENDLESS, Once you are ready to put some more time and money into the sound can be UNBELIEVABLE even some old $30-$60 carts can sound AMAZING when match with a table that likes them
@@ocularcavity8412 Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I have an SL-Q2, which I love. And I have a great cartridge on it. I'm always just doubting my alignment/VTA/VTF, so the freedom of not worrying about that sounds nice, haha.
@@mf1932 Yeah i feel ya, alignment can be tricky especially when the cartridge is an interesting shape ( i am looking at you ortofon ) as much as i love the 2M black and red i NEVER take them off their head shell cause it takes it takes a lot of care to get them in just the right position and not lose the position while tightening
I am sorry, but you have been apparently confused by the manual regarding the anti-skating settings. The second groove is for 15 to 19 mN, so it is the same one for the Red with 18mN VTF and for the Bronze with 15mN VTF. If you want to go lower, you have to use the first groove intended for 10 to 14 mN instead of the third, which is for 20 to 30mN.
Yes you're right have to use the first groove 1 to 1.4 g you just move the decimal point, I would always use the first groove anyway do not rely on on the force of the cartridge it changes along the record surface anyway! The further to the centre it gets the bias increases and vice-a-versa, and it had bias already looking at it I don't know if thats the wire incorrectly installed or it's on maybe an unlevel surface! always run it heavy especially when braking in
About a year ago I purchased a pro-ject turntable similar to this but the DC model. The sound is ok but I think that given what I know now I am not sure I would buy it again. As I wrote the sound quality is ok however initially I had problems with motorhum and there is still quite a bit of rumble going on. I also had quite a bit of IGD but I have since solved that with a cartridge change to an mp110. Ps even an at95e works better on this than the Otofon red it comes with. On top the turntable itself doesnt make a very robust impression and is a bit flimsy. I have a Thorens td160 from the last 80s as well and qualitywise there are light years between them. I am now looking to trading my pro-ject in and getting myself a technics which should be a bit better built (but obviously more expensive)
Tom, I am doing the same and I’ve already sold my Debut Carbon Espirit for the same reasons as you! I recommend a Technics SL-Q2/Q3 or a Technics SL-D2/D3.
Bronze and black pickup use’s silver coils windings, but no problem to use a red on that bronze pickup, let’s say you don’t want to damage the expensive bronze needle on a record from the used store

..Great Turntables I own a Pro-Ject Carbon Debut, about Five Years With some Upgrades, but unfortunately it is Really noisy… I saw the new ones with lot of upgrades.Which is Great!. …I Would Rather go for The AudioTechnica AT-LP 7.Best of Two Worlds, Belt Drive + Technics Style Arm! on the Budget!

This is why I prefer turntables with removable headshells, including cartridges pre-mounted to a headshell; watching you remove and connect those wires gave me anxiety. Furthermore, looking at this Pro-Ject turntable makes me appreciate my Technics turntables even more than before.

The only way to really know would be to try them both. A heavier platter has a better flywheel effect and should hold better speed, but acrylic is known to be very quiet.
I am thinking of purchasing this. Thanks for the information.....Is the output on the wall-wart AC or DC?. My phono pre-amp (Schiit Mani) has a wall-wart with an AC output, which I thought was unusual. I wonder why they would do that?

@@EddieJazzFan There really shouldn't be an advantage either way. If the power supply is stable and the motor speed is as well, either should work fine. Technically, going AC to AC just involves a transformer, where as AC to DC involves rectification.
Because it's cheaper and easier to make a rectification in the shitt then spending a lot of money on a good quality switch mode power supply, what would have put the cost of that unit double its price or more.. it's not a great pre-amp and your stuck on mc issues. The ifi zen is better for mc but if I was you I'd go with the Rega fono about $160 for mm cheapest second-hand. If you really want to get into it then the project innovate tube box2 phono stage is excellent for 350 running MC or MM especially if you update the tubes. if You going to get that project change these RCA leads they're not particularly that good and they're not shielded. length plays a big part in moving magnet the shorter the the more bass you'll get the longer it is the more top end you will achieve so keep that in mind on cartridges you have? So for these ortofon cartridges I will keep it short no more than half a metre and triple shielded cable something like Belden cable 50ohms RG214 /u or RG13/u different resistant properties, not expensive. use silver RCA plugs they Chinese ones are ok I think or something from chord Electronics. And your question is it's 15V DCV. And change the power supply for a regulate switch mode 15 volt 3+ amp power supply something for a laptop would be a lot better
A pal gifted me 2m black body(no stylus) & I thought 💭 wonder how my 2m blue stylus would fare in the black body…WOW!!!not only does it fit but also works,& works great! Don’t know what I’m losing from the black, but I know what im gaining from the blue stylus. It sounds fantastic & a cheaper upgrade.
I own this turntable and upgraded the cables sold to me the same day. The salesperson was the store owner and mentioned he wanted to retire and was selling up. It was my way back into vinyl about 4 years ago. I would recommend this to anyone on a tight budget. The black piano finish looks very cool but tends to show off dust and scratches. so what to buy to upgrade?
I would but some KilMat to quiet the obnoxious motor noise by covering the resonant plastic platter, or sell the table and get a vintage Technics which costs less and has better specs!
Ortofon Blue, of courze, is as high up the chain as is acceptable on the Pro-Ject Debut models according to the manufacturers. Bronze is a better cart than the table is a table.

the arm has fractures That's not right haha that adding more bias not less ! you want it on the nearest portion of of the bar give you less tracking Force and always go by cartridge recommendation not manufacture of turntable. No you don't want means power in the turntable that's not good but yes that will what adaptor is a low cac a good quality mains switch mode power supply would be beneficial
Its not overkill. I went from the Red , to the Bronze ( OMG!) , to the Black . (( OO MM GG !) LOL 🤣 NOW , to a MC that cost $300 more than the table. Happy now .

Now I bought a pro-ject Evo. I put a sumiko songbird moving coil on. It is wonderful. The ortofon red is a nice starter cartridge. I was impressed for that price. I never purchased the blue stylist, I just switched to the bronze stylus and cartridge , that was quite an improvement up the ladder , then I found a lightly-used Ortofon black stylist for sale. Wow wee ! Those are very nice. Never had a moving coil and I'm happy with this one. As for overkill on the Evo , I don't think so. It's balanced and setting on a marble cutting board that's sitting on four suspension feet. No bass rumble. Just sweet music. Yes I have a $899 cartridge on a $499 turntable ,with a $350 power supply. It works very well. It's really about the music.
These new "audiophile" turntables that cost $300-$500 are a joke to me. No safety clamp on the tone arm rest? No removable headshell for the standard mount cartridge? Belt drive with worse wow and flutter than a garage sale direct drive? Sometimes pay extra for optional dustcover? And the salt in the wound is that they are made in China.
