Pro-Ject VC-E Compact Record Cleaning Machine Review - As good as the VC-S2 ALU?

Does the VC-E compact record cleaning machine from Pro-Ject match up to its bigger brother, the VC-S2 ALU?
After recently reviewing the VC-S2 ALU, Sound Matters put the small compact design through its paces.
The only difference between the VC-S2 and the VC-E is the chassis. The former has a large 2.5l tank, while the latter features a much smaller 0.5l version.
In the end, we settled on the VC-E for its compact design which is more suitable for home use.

Have been using the Project VC-E for over a year now. One easy modification I made to make the cleaning more controlled was to place a narrow piece of tape on the top clamp from the center out so I could count the revolutions as I cleaned and vacuumed. The other application tip is to clean side b first so when flipped over the exhaust further dries the side prior to placing on TT.

Nice tip. Have you had any vent issues with condensation or splashing? This is the 1 issue that has me on the fence
@dennisw4654

@@HarryLoveTV I have had no issues. My typical use is 1 to 3 albums in a session. From what I has seen on you tube and read in reviews that only can occur when cleaning many multiple records in succession. Otherwise the fluid build up is minimal and evaporates before I use it agin the next time.

@@HarryLoveTV after not using this for a few weeks I found that the vent hole WAS causing condensation, I now use the plastic see through device ( size of a record) . Now at the beginning and end of the record the vacuum is not drying in these areas which I’ve heard before , I could be sending this back , this is not what I wanted !

Great video, just one question, could I use a paint pad instead of a Goat haired brush as a lot of people recommend this process .
@soundmatters

What material is the paint pad? My preference, increasingly, is to use GrooveWasher's "Black Magic" pad instead of the goats hair brush to apply the fluid. This gives me some gentle mechanical cleaning before I apply the vac.

A lot of questions about the plate shield, and here's another ... Is there also a benefit to having a rigid support surface beneath the record to keep the vinyl from bending during the cleaning process? It seems like the vinyl could use some support when vacuuming, brushing, etc. Any thoughts on this, @soundmatters ?
@soundmatters
@soundmatters Год назад
There are pros and cons. The vent, undoubtedly, could have been better placed. As for having a solid platter: there’s more chance of spreading dust/dirt from one record to the next, but it does provide a more solid platform. Happy spinning and enjoy the music 🎶 🎄
@LloydCapital
@LloydCapital Год назад
Makes sense, thanks. With the amount of people using this model and also the bigger VC-S2 (no platter provided), I guess I haven't seen any reviews citing issues of excessive bending or warping. So seems like it must not be a major issue.

Just bought one of these. It came with the clear plate to protect the underside of the lp. Cleaned a record that had some crackle and a skip. After using the machine, it played perfectly. It was amazing. The machine is super loud so I had to wear ear defenders to clean the record. Accessories included a clear large t-shaped piece of plastic. Do you know what is that for?

Mine now sounds like a jet taking off! So loud! Took it apart and saw that two of the three plastic motor mounts were broken, so I super Glued the pieces back together with metal washers on top. I oiled the motor but never got to determine if that helped because the unit no longer works - probably switched the wires around on the On/Off switch and hosed up something.

what's your thoughts on combining a vaccuum-based RCM with something similar to a Knosti Antistat? I.e. giving it a good brush with the Knosti, and then vaccuuming it with this? Or is that overkill?

Currently have a disco antistat, which I use a mixture of Distilled water, pure alcohol and a few drops of wetting agent, which I get impressive results from followed by a rinse with just distilled water, I would be really interested to know what gains (if any) would be by purchasing this (and I am very tempted especially when there are 20% offers on auction sites), but I keep thinking that all I am paying a big outlay for is the vacuum element, so just convenience rather than any benefit cleaning wise. So far I am yet to see a comparison between something like this and a manual cleaner which would be great. Great review though

We should hear what the machine sounds like. Switching off the very loud vacuum machine in favour of some overdubbed music and spoken words gives us a very comfortable yet wrong impression of this important phase of the cleaning process. Many find the volume produced by the machine annoying. But thanks for the video nevertheless, it explains well and relaxed all the rest we need to know.

@@playbackvintagehifihunter9669 that's why people hear different sound when record is clean by using different wetting agents!! I forgot to say you might like to nearly bring it to the boil the deionised water because it does contain bacteria I'm not sure that's live or dead, the minute you open a bottle of distilled water bacteria will get in there from the air so not much there, but deionised or non-deionised water it's not the same as distilled, is mineral free salt free. i always put a bit of isopropanol 10% in my water but some people don't like to do that. when filtering water you can use coffee filters and the coffee funnel, or you could use a standard funnel, I generally use two filters at a time and I soak them in isopropanol to kill bacteria. when putting back into bottle. leave the bottle on a windowsill so the sun can get it that will kill bacteria as well

@@soundmatters I did buy the larger version, but unfortunately it leaked used fluid underneath the chassis so I returned it. I'm now going to buy the VC-E instead seeing as it does the same job, with a smaller footprint. Apparently, the vacuum and motor are the same. Here in the US the voltage is only 110v and I do wonder if I plugged it into my 220v UK transformer whether it would be much more powerful. The voltage rating in the handbook says 110v or 220v but maybe the ones exported to the US are just for 110v. I'm very wary of trying it ha ha I'm going to make a simple diverter from a plastic plumbing elbow to ensure no condensation problem... should be easy enough.
