Randy's so greasy it's a wonder the Duke Nukem franchise hasn't slipped out of hands and landed back at 3D Realms, resulting in an actual new Duke game.
@@sokiel6663 uh, sarcasm? 3d realms's most recent games are.. Ion fury, wraith aeon of ruin, graven, ghostrunner... I don't know about you but these games are pretty decent and liked by many.
I don’t know if this is possible but if it is possible to buy an ID from a company and then sell it to another company, i fucking would.

@@sokiel6663 Yea it's better to let the ip rot and do nothing with it for 10 years than giving it to a studio that actually released a few competent games lately. You're so dumb.
I'm Mitch, I'm one of the developers on Raze and worked predominantly on the input, timing and interpolation code. Thank you so much for giving our port some publicity in the video! We'll look at the issues you've reported and get them fixed ASAP. There's a lot of exciting work happening and work on a new renderer has commenced as well. The future is bright :)
Ty for turning up. I didn't tried Duke3D with your Port yet, but I played this 'NAM shooter from GT Interactive... Pretty mediocre experience I you ask me. But that's not the fault of your Port.😅
You already heard it from him but seriously it was excellent, easily my favorite episode music wise. I caught myself humming the tracks after playing the levels for the first time, I usually don’t even remember music after the first time I listen and this was just in the background! Absolutely outstanding.
You and Bobby Prince made some awesome music for Duke 3D, it's right up there with Doom and Goldeneye 64 for "most memorable FPS soundtrack of the 90s." (confession: have yet to play Rise of the Triad, I'm waiting on the upcoming remaster, but what clips Civvie played in previous videos sound awesome)
IN HIS RAVENOUS HATRED, HE FOUND NO PEACE, AND WITH BOILING BLOOD, HE SCOURED THE BUILD ENGINE SOURCE PORTS SEEKING VENGEANCE AGAINST THE GREASY DEVELOPER WHO HAD WRONGED HIM.
The rumble of the rocket in slowmo and what sounds to be a small sighing sound is rather nice when you could feel Civvie fuming in that moment, but the easily imagined "RAW!" in that moment just really ascends it to MWAH, PERFECTION
Another Duke Nukem enjoyer I see Speaking of, I remember you commenting about wanting to use Brandon Blume's Grabbag Legacy remix for a video, which vid ended up using it?
Agreed, there are a couple of other pretty good ones that cover boomer shooters (e.g. Gmanlives), but this one is the most entertaining. Big fan of the official podcast as well, good stuff man!
6:50 Well, the name "Siskova" may be translated as "Bobbies". Sometimes we use last names (like Ivanov, Petrov, Raganovich) instead of regular names (Like Ivan, Andrei or Natasha), and russian second names sometimes have suffix "-ova\-eva" (depends on the gender). And the word "Siski" in russian means literally "boobies". So Duke may think about Natasha Boobies and Nastya Boobies
@@peacemaster8117 I know I'm late, but typical Russian syntax is backwards from English. So, instead of saying "Natasha's Boobies" in English, it would read closer to "The boobies of Natasha" in Russian. And there aren't articles in Russian, so it would translate more directly as "boobies Natasha" unless the modifiers of the words are present. This is not easy to explain while drunk, that is for sure.
The Build Engine has a bug where if the enemy doesn't load up into memory properly it will have infinite health. This can result from numerous actions, one of them being quick saving at the wrong time, then loading from that quick save. Fun Fact: all of the SSI Dungeons and Dragons First Person Perspective games have the same bug. All of those engines came out during the same period, and I think it had something to do with a programming theory that was being used to expand beyond initial limitations of DOS. It took me 20 years of playing Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession before I experienced the bug in the SSI engine. So whatever bug it is it's pretty rare and hard to trigger. I only experienced the bug once in Blood on the train, iirc.
World Tour Duke (and I assume this might carry over into playing the episode in Raze since it's a bug in the script files) adds a new bug that makes mini-bosses invincible if you land the would-be-killing blow with the flamethrower.
@@kylehyde215CA *Laura kicks the key away and steps on Duke's hand. Laura: "Heh heh..." Duke: "I'm gonna rip your head off and sh*t down your neck." Then he roids out and rips the bars down. Laura: "Agghghhghh!"
9:15 I'm British and I can confirm that the house of commons is full of fat piglike monsters with explosive (verbal) diarrhoea ruled over by a very near sighted lizard thing.
Weird it still lacks a proper re-release on digital storefronts, though the Xbox 360 version is backwards compatible with the Xbox One and Series X. I think it's due to legal problems as 3D Realms and 2K published the 2006 original but at some point Bethesda got the rights to the IP (it's a similar problem with Raven's 2009 Wolfenstein game). Hell apparently the 2017 game wasn't even originally intended to be called "Prey" but Bethesda told Arkane "hey own the IP rights to the Prey name, why not just use that?" so Arkane went with it since the name still fit the game despite no connections to the 2006 game (Prey 2017 is a System Shock styled immersive sim as opposed to a traditional FPS).
If I live to see the Prey video and then die right afterwards, I'll have lived a full life with no regrets. That's how much I'm waiting for it. Well, not really, but you know... you know the thing... anyway...
Definitely leads to an endless string of jokes seeing as how Duke is basically the antithesis of every SH protagonist ever. Him being hilariously insensitive and happy-go-lucky whenever catastrophic and emotional stuff is going down could make for a mini- webseries. Somebody call up Gianni and get him to voice a couple lines! There's also an interesting side to that whole scenario too, if you were to swap out Duke for James in SH2 or a copy cat game like Downpour. What would his monsters look like, etc. I suspect Duke's only real demons would involve his family that has never been mentioned.
Hidden benefit of Civvie's Patron list growing: getting to hear "How'd I Do?" loop twice per video ending instead of once, and knowing it probably won't be too long before he has to loop it three times!
@@Zeithri Some reviewers don't seem to love reviewing games at all, or don't dive too deeply into them before criticizing them or saying how they're "the greatest game ever." Usually happens on different platforms, but some channels devolve into a vacuum of emotion. My main man Slowbeef got like that at a certain point and I stopped watching (RIP Retsupurae) .
so most game reviewer nowdays?, most popular reviewer are know to like waht they do, not much only profesional reviewers nowdays, mostly Ign or other cite reviewers.
There's definitely, as in any profession, cynical folks who do the bare minimum because they want the paycheck, not necessarily the job. Most of us work those kinds of jobs, so I don't hate those folks, but yes, some of them are easy to spot when they just read the press release plus 'I enjoyed it/didn't enjoy it' as the last paragraph which is wholly their own. Then again, games journalism is a racket, has been since the mid 80s and folks act like it JUST NOW became a problem...or that the problems it has are exclusive to this one industry. Oh shit, am I making a Civvie style comment offhanded in a weird adjacent fuck off about something which is supposed to be simple and is actually far more complicated than most people care to donate brain function to? Maybe. My next magic trick is causing heads in the comment section to catch fire when they read me talking about gamergate having nothing to do with games journalism. WHOO! Stay tuned for that one!
It's like they felt they *had* to have Duke say the full thing, since that's how the "that's one DOOMed space marine" and "that's one DEAD SPACE marine" references went.
And further irony now that Sam is still kicking, Halo is still around thanks to the MCC and Infinite, Doom is even more alive thanks to 2016 and Eternal, while Duke is stuck in limbido as long as the grease trap has his hands on it
@@ArcturusOTE As I said before, I think that the Build engine is just *cursed.* Most of the games on it suck, and the ones that are actually good have succumbed to some kind of twisted joke; Duke Nukem’s plight needs no explanation, Blood was killed off by a greedy publisher, Shadow Warrior required a reboot to be noteworthy, and Ion Maiden was branded as transphobic propaganda.
@@expendableround6186 Wait, literally who thinks that about Ion Maiden/Ion Fury? Like, actually what could be the source for that thought? I don't recall anything problematic in that.
@@Mightylcanis It was something about a sprite, along with one of the devs being less than subtle about his views. I’ve honestly forgotten the specifics, I try to forget about it.
Garbage stories, uninspired enemy design, wonky animation and underused geomod, what else to say. The engine was nice though, though today I see how much less level geometry detail it has vs Q3 engine games.
@@Misanthroat Well, part 2 is worse in some aspects, especially if we compare the PC versions, but it is also more action-packed (no running through drab empty caves) and has multiplayer with bots. Part 1 on PC was obviously superior to the PS2 version, but part 2 looks like a direct port with drab textures, ugly UI and no online MP. Still, far from the worst shooter you could play. Gunplay and performance were solid.
Minor note, the little b in Mb specifically refers to "megabits", which is 1/8th of a megabyte. For it to be "megabyte", the B needs to be capitalized. As in "MB".
I'm surprised that Civvie didn't point out the new quotes of this release, one of them is "Bazinga". Jon St. John said that he refused to do other lines because apparently were ever worse.
To be fair, he DID reference "Bazinga" at least in a previous Duke video, when he was poking fun about how Aliens would use his mind to take over the world. ----------BAZINGAAAAA----------
@@mastafull There actually is a mod that does exactly that. With all the sweet bitcrushing the new lines sound much more in line with the classic ones.
In defiance of Civvie's imperialist mandate, not only will I leave a comment, I will leave it in English. Duke is wondering about sisters whose last name would be translated as "Boobievs" or something like that. Don't know if names hold any significance. They are normal Russian names.
If you ever actually want to play the cursed Randy version, there’s a way to solve the mouse acceleration issues. Go into your video card options, find the EXE for the game, and both turn off V-Sync and set up a framerate cap. (Thanks to the friendly folks in the Steam Discussions for the game for sharing this information.) Or you could just use eDuke, because someone made a stopgap for it (which Civvie has used!) that lets you play the fifth episode with that port.
Funnily enough, Deadspace 1 has this exact same issue but instead of mouse acceleration issues its physics engine and collision detection incorporate the FPS so at 350 fps (which a toaster can do) EVERY ragdoll jiggles constantly. ...it's a good time.
"I'm looking for the babes. Tall, blonde, big tittied. Have you seen them?" Also instead of health drinks, he uses tall boys, instead of ampoules he uses steroids, etc.
I’m Bob, I was the lead encouragement designer on most of these levels and really appreciate the feedback. If you notice mid way through some of the levels you can almost pinpoint where my encouragement came in. Thanks again.
I like how Civvie doesn’t seem to be doing this show because the people tell him to. He seems to genuinely care about this show and his viewers and I really admire that. :)
I really appreciate you doing a rundown of these old school shooters. I wanted to play so many of them when I was a kid, but only can play a select few and now I don't have the time for them. It's nice to see you go through and actually see what the hype is about.
"You alien bastards are gonna pay for screwing up my weed tourism!" Might be my favorite out of context line ever. I find myself saying it everytime I play a game that has aliens as the main villains
I like ambient occlusion, but *really* not for games that have simplistic lighting, shading and/or geometry like DN3D. That effect only really looks good when the game already has fairly decent lighting/shading and geometry, and even with World Tour DN3D doesn't have either. Applying AO or raytracing to games like this to me is something of a lighting/shading equivalent of those HD texture packs for DOOM and Minecraft and shit, that look so incredibly off because the underlying geometry is still very primitive. Chromatic abberation though can fuck right off, unless you're actively trying to go for a VHS recording look or something.
I remember playing that "death area" for the first time and barely surviving. Afterwards I thought, "huh, that was actually something." and then I found the designer had no intention for you to be able to live, at least your first time and that felt pretty good.
Gotta love how Levellord and Allen basically says how Randy is not THAT good of being a level designer. So now he can't rub and nobody faces that he can even the most decent levels, because normally needs other designers to actually make it work
For those inmortal bosses , there is a bug. When you kill a boss with the flamethrower. They become unkillable because there is not death animation for them. With the flamethrower
For what’s it’s worth I bought this on the Nintendo Switch (this version apparently came out in 2020)and a lot of the issues I heard you talk about were actually smoothed out… it’s honestly my favorite game to play on the Switch now! That and the rerelease of Quake. It certainly is weird playing those 2 games back to back on a Nintendo Handheld System, but hey I’ll take my old school shooters where I can get em and I don’t have them on PC because I don’t have a good PC…
It's always Randy, whereever Civvie goes, he always sees his face. Poor Civvie xD Lmao the greasy jokes, masterpiece Prey hype! Still hoping for Prey 2 where you get to play as alien bounty hunter :(
PREY HYPE PREY HYPE only problem is TBH when Prey released we didn't know how awful a dude Art Bell would be (and he's dead now) so we couldn't have him return. George Noory exists but Noory frankly lacks that kinda gravitas and is more the eternally amazed uncle than the growling conspiracy dude. Loved the first Prey. Even if it was a hot mess. 2017 was probably the better game but... TBH I love both for entirely different reasons.
Did Civvie just say, "I'm doing Prey 2006 next?" Hooooly Jesus...I can't wait for this. Be still my heart if he also goes and does Dark Messiah of Might & Magic.
When I played the 5th Element bit, I had somehow shattered the mirror, so when they revealed it, I just saw the wood panel when Duke was saying the line.
There's some issues you didn't mention about the cursed Randy version that I absolutely loathe, so here they are: - Sometimes the game will randomly switch into another weapon after you fire a single shot as if you ran out of ammo; - Sometimes Assault Troppers fly somewhere you can't reasonably hit them in levels that are particularly tall; - The scrolling weapon switch is janky and slow so you're better off just using the numbers anyway; - Keycards ocasionally want you to eat shit and won't activate even when you're breathing into the slot so sometimes you'll just have to back away and try to use one at very specific angles, which can be absolutely infuriating if you want to speedrun a level or are trying to escape a room full of enemies when you don't have ammo to deal with all of them; - The issue of getting squished in very specific corners of maps that shouldn't be allowed to do so still happens; - Because Gearbox is full of dumbasses instead of fixing the online play the same issues from the Megaton Edition carried over, meaning that even though you'll hardly if ever encounter lag (unless you play on specific large levels with the Devastator and have the 3D render on, specifically on Duke Match indoors, thanks Randy) and you'll most likely get disconnected often for no reason, sometimes the game tells you it's because the host left (which 9/10 was me when I played with friends, so... Not true) and most of the times the game doesn't even tell you why. For some reason that's a bigger issue in Campaign, doesn't happen nearly as often on Duke Match. Outside of that, great video, enjoyable as always, I pretty much agree that most of the levels are amazing, but the last boss is indeed shit, I wouldn't even mind the fact it's a reskin if it was at least fun, and to make it so all it would have taken was making the arena smaller and the range of the flamethrower longer. Such a shame.
It's amazing, and also kind of sad, that the best Duke Nukem games in recent years are being done by non-professional designers and released for free. Man, Duke's modding scene is so fucking underrated.
I was blown away by how well it was done. Having bombshell as a playable character was also a really cool addition, especially for coop. She even gets different guns.
Civie, I feel you're the only person who could, or has the community to, solve a game from my childhood -but cant remember the name of for the life of me. It was an FPS, maybe windows 95 / dos where the basic premise was you created a robot before starting a new game, the skill of the robot assembly was determined by the skill level (hardes difficulty would mean you had to match the placement as accurate). Once in, the basic plot was all of earths children were kidnapped by a witch (I recall this being drawn animation) and after would play similar to wolfenstein / doom. Navigate a castle, find weapons, and shoot supernatural creatures.
I love that bit at the end: "does that mean youre doing Red Faction next? NO! Prey 2006 is next!" I will gladly watch WHATEVER you decide to put up on your channel. I got Prey 2006 for Xmas like 2 years ago, a brand new sealed physical copy, havent played it yet, but I think after you put your video up of it, its going to make me want to play it! Cant wait!
Now that Gearbox has been bought, we can expect more Randy Pitchford jokes in the future since he's likely not running out of money. So there's at least that.
Wait bought by who? Edit: looked it up and it was bought by the embracer group, the same parent company that owns deep silver and thq nordic. Thanks for the update.
"I've never smoked the reefer, nor will I, lest this show become weird and incomprehensible" Yep that checks out, confirmed Civvie has never smoked the weed
