There was a period of time where GameSpy was better than using a PC game's own server browser to find online games. Steam pretty much spelled it's doom.
I think neverwinter nights ran GameSpy servers. It still sends Shivers down my spine when I come to install it again and it says "would you like to install gamespy servers"?
"Seems like there's always one more Ninja hiding in the darkness." Well, there's a paper written by a Doctor in Theoretical Physics on how you can never prove the *absence* of Ninjas, only their direct presence.
I heard he was working on the publication but nobody has heard from the guy in a while. Maybe he's not buckling to his publishers, which I applaud. It's important for a scientist to retain a free man's mind.
"Ninjas! Of course, that's like rule number one! It's Occam's Shuriken: when the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas." - What said Theoretical Physicist said when he discovered said phenomenon.
I’ve gotta say, Lo Wang has a ton of personality. Sure, he talks like an Asian stereotype, but “incredibly badass elderly Chinese assassin living in Japan who loves nuclear weapons and dick jokes” is something I think the world needs more of.
It's like getting to play a FPS as Master Roshi (who's Japanese, I know, but you get the idea). Kind of awesome, really. Even has the same luck with the ladies.
Without the yellowface voice, Lo Wang's a remilitarist Conservitive for Empirial Japan, and also probably a China reunificationist if he's THIS much of a conservitive.
@@emissaryofcharybdis105 well Dragon Ball is heavily influenced by chinese art and culture, not to mention the alias he uses is Jackie Chun, he may very well be Chinese. But in reality he's neither, since Dragon Ball isnt set in real world.
Oh man, I played on Gamespy back when SWBF 2 (2005) was new. I was 9, way too young to be playing shooters, let alone online by the standards of the time. I'm 23 now. It does NOT feel like it's been nearly 14 years, yet here we are.
Can we take a moment to appreciate Civvie modifying the voxel model files to fix a source port bug? And while we're here, can we take an additional moment to appreciate that Ken Silverman, the creator of the build engine, in 2011 made available slab6, the voxel model files editor, on his website for everyone to enjoy? Thanks, guys!
I'm surprised you guys haven't talked about c fours ass kick, or the hiroshima ball buster. Sorry if the last one is in bad taste, I'll change it if you ask.
you mean the school of The Five Point Palm technique, which explodes hearts. Not only can ninjas main explosive weaponry, they can use them at point blank range.
Hey, Mokuba, I'm doing a really hard crossword puzzle. What's an eight-letter word that means "to deliberately destroy, damage or obstruct, especially for political or military advantage"?
Wanton Destruction's Auto Factory and other maps rendering too dark is another fault of the Redux source port's inaccurate OpenGL renderer. What should be a dark lighting gradient as seen in the original software renderer is instead rendered in Redux as an opaque wall of black fog that's set much too close to the player's face.
@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine More like "@Voidpoint VoidSW when". I imagine Kaiser would rather spend an eternity in hell as Hitler's opening act instead of going back into Build to do conversion work for it through KEX. Especially after Fresh Supply fizzled so bad.
@@Corpseplower Is the Shadow Warrior source code lost too? The bitch with Fresh Blood is that he had no source code to work with so him and his team had to recreate the game's behavior from scratch, approximating everything, as a commercial project under nuAtari, who didn't want to spend a lot of money and didn't feel like hiring them long enough to fix everything. I have little reason to believe he couldn't make a good port if he had the time, and money to pay staff.
Fun fact: Here in Australia, the movie Airplane was renamed “Flying High” and I dunno how it’s perceived today but in its heyday gave many Australians sore stomachs and worn out rewind buttons.
Seeing the nuke counter again, and the fact that you're still keeping count from the original videos, makes me warm and fuzzy inside. And outside. Radiation has that effect.
It's amazing that voice he did. If you watch the first Problem Child movie with him playing the warden briefly, when he's yelling at the Bow Tie killer and the rorshach test dude, you can kinda make out his Lo Wang voice. RIP to him, John Ritter, Jack Warden (lol how ironic), and most recently Gilbert Gottfried.
Oh god, I had to pause the video for a laugh break somewhere after 22:28 for that "super kung fu jump!" Good thing I watched this at work, now I'm involuntarily smiling at all my customers :P
"who chases two rabbits catches neither" civie trying to appease blood crowd, trying to appease shadow warrior crowd, trying to appease plutonia crowd.... im just glad he did herectic 2 lol
@@scribese7en Kids today can't even fathom chasing down even one rabbit on foot to feed their family. Surely a sign of our decline as a culture. Go outside and bang some rocks together until you're an alpha male (like me).
Man, really wish Wanton Destruction was allowed to be polished up before being cancelled . I’d hope if it was released it would have had a unique final boss and slightly more fair level design. Like it’s really bad when Twin Dragons, a FREE fan pack, has its own unique final boss and at least somewhat unique ending cutscene that’s not just stills.
@Lucien Hicks dark place. Dark place dark place! I imagine the people who made Shadow warrior would think that show was great, especially "Scotch Mist"
I can already see a new hack ROM with me and a friends inside joke about how China was never really communist where he does work as an assassin "Make Cash Money for Chairman Mao" with Heretic boss nods "Kung Pow's Chicken"
Only played the first one i quite liked it. But considering he opened up the pro wang series by bashing the reboot we're going to have to nag him a bit.
I legit couldnt finish the 2nd game because it broke on me and i couldnt continue.... also the auto gen maps were the worst..... first one was ok though
Shadow Warrior reboot since it's actually good even though the new low wang is lame. I want an old inappropriate kung fu master not some young hipster.
So weird to see that PlanetQuake reference. So much of my teen years spent on PlanetQuake, PlanetUnreal, PlanetHalflife, and all the different Filefront sites for games like JK2. It's a shame a lot of that stuff got nuked, and there's maps/mods that'll never see daylight again.
wasnt filefront affilied with the planet sites - by the looks at their absent maps they claim they have but dont i suppose so - they have this weekly broadcast for theri forum users ( and on youtbe)
8:24 The enemies getting faster at low health is taken from Marathon on the Forge/Vulcan 2 engine, including the first game the same year as Doom 2. It's called berserking: basically in Marathon, enemies follow Doom infighting rules but as some of them like fighters and troopers get weaker, they start not just running faster but firing more erratically and even turn on their allies including monsters of the exact same type. Only once the latter get damaged by them enough do they retaliate. It's an interesting evolution of monster infighting while mixing it with the "turns red" trope. Halo would later do different variants on the same thing with panicking grunts, sword drawing elites, enraged hunters and berserk brutes.
This is like Regular Car Reviews but with the games I played as a kid. I love this channel Civvie, keep it up. It reminds me of when DOS prompts taught me how to read as a little kid. Since I loved PC gaming even before I turned two years old and was fascinated with electronics, my dad gave me a list of commands so I could play games while he and my mom were at work. Granted, I shouldn't have been playing Duke3D at that age (I turned out okay) but I loved Commander Keen, Duke3D, Doom, and the countless shareware CDs with 99+ games on them that would get passed down to me. Now that I discovered your channel and my wife got me a Rift S for Christmas, I've been going back and playing a lot of these games in VR with various mods and patches to enhance the experience.
Nice usage of "Age of Wonders" units getting hit / dying sounds at 25:06 - 25:35. Still surprised that nobody else caught/mentioned it for the past couple of years.
the “ooooo” girl sound effect at 13:21 instantly brought me back to leveling a warlock in actual vanilla wow when i unlocked the Succubus. (she makes the same sound, and also smacks her own ass)
Rasturant was actually the name of the planned Jamaican level, but it was cut and replaced at the last minute due to being too racially insensitive for shadow warrior.
I lost it laughing at the fact she was probably into....yeah. Good thing I wasn't eating during that time because it would've also caused projectile vomiting.
Thanks for this. I played these a few months back for the achievements and needed to look up a few guides to work out how to actually finish the levels
After watching for videos, I have a sneaking suspicion that Lo Wang might have been the first master of the assassination technique of the Fist of the North Star. He would be the exact kind of guy skilled and brutal enough to create a technique that allows you punch a guy to death before they even know it.
I feel like the first Shadow Warrior remake doesn't get enough credit for kicking off this glorious era of retro shooters (do not talk to me about Hard Reset), but then again Shadow Warrior 2 kind of eats up all the good will I have for them. I do hope Flying Wild Hog is working on something though, maybe this current trend will push them in the right direction.
Here's hoping. And in regards to new projects, FWH is working on something with Devolver according to a recent tweet, which is likely one of three unannounced games they're currently working on. No real details so far, just them asking us to stay tuned and that they'll reveal more later this year. But I have a feeling that at least one of them will be the real shit we've been waiting for: Hard Reset 2. And another Shadow Warrior, ofc.
After seeing all of the pro videos on the build engine 3, I've been on a 3d realms bender. I picked up Blood FS, Duke 3d, Shadow warrior redux, and Ion fury. First time I've played all these games, and I love them. They're all I've been playing for the past week or so.
8:43 "This is not a sha-wade..." is a line from the portion of Kentucky Fried Movie titled A Fistful Of Yen, which is itself a parody of Enter The Dragon. Also, "ancient Chinese secret" was the slogan for Calgon brand water softener.
I usually dont watch lets play or playtroughs and all that, but hear your coments as you surf the highest difficulty in all these games and even more you give them value. you just won my subcribe and watch sirh.
I kinda want civvii to play the new ones and talk about how they feel like a passing faded memory of what they were. I mean, they’re ok games but they don’t have that same feeling of brute force anger mixed with happy nostalgia.
There's something about build engine game gibbing that's more satisfying than gibbing in any other video game or game engine. The splorty sound fx, the gore and blood sprites flying everywhere, it's beautiful.
I am new to this channel and I love it! I don't even care about modern FPS games anymore but seeing a honest opinion/review on Blood, Shadow Warrior, Duke is awesome. All these games were part of my childhood. Thank you man.
One day I hope Civvie takes a look see at one of my old faves of the age, Requiem Avenging Angel. You get to be an angel with guns. What's not to love?
