i've honestly been debating whether i think Cynthia or Ghetsis (BW1) is the hardest fight. i've had loads of trouble with both of them.

@@Anand70707 adaptive damage isn’t scary at all for anyone that’s ever played a Fire Emblem game. It’s super easy to play around, and fairy types, especially mixed defensive fairy types with Toxic, Substitute and Protect, laugh at UN. I had a Malamar for that fight, and I didn’t bring him in because I had a bulky Primarina and I just Moonblasted it to death while it tried desperately to AD and Smart Strike her to death, which didn’t work out so well since my Primarina was able to 3 shot, needed to take 3 shots before dying and was faster. Decidueye and Mimikyu are also easy counters. They have ghost coverage and Mimikyu’s got Disguise for easy Toxic.

@@reaperofthings I mean if you have to literally pick your starter specifically to be able to beat one Pokemon that's hours away from the start of the game I think that means it's not as easy as you think it is, also mimikyu is not a common encounter

That’s not picking your starter to sweep ONE thing, that’s counter picking pretty much the entire game Also, Mimikyu isn’t a common encounter, true. But i’ve caught one every time I went through the abandoned Pokemart. Usually as my first encounter. Luck plays a large part sure, but if you pick Primarina, you basically win

It's probably because many people see "Oh, she just has dragon types. I can probably sweep with a Vanilluxe or something" and not realize how bulky and strong her pokemon actually are.

@@ToonCaliOfGreatness Plus she's literally got two checks to ice types in lapras and aggron built into her team. Archeops can outspeed and KO any ice type easily as well. water is actually her biggest counter bc it resists most of her STABs or is supereffective and most water types get an ice type move.

@@greyscaleadaven Correction, Fighting is Iris biggest counter, all 3 of her mons are weak to fighting and if you get a Lucario then you will likely have a counter for 4 of her mons. The Durigon is weak overall stat wise but with life orb and sheer force, it can be a problem for you team

Agreed. Type specialties at this level is dumb. Heck at gym level most of the vanilla games you basically sweep every one of these with one pokemon... Little to zero type variety and too many overlapping weaknesses.. The literal only gym leader in vanilla that does have a kinda balanced team is Piers in SwSh. A game that did gyms nice was Insurgence.. Cool strats, type variety and good movesets

You could change Glacia into stall and use Hail Stall, making use of all the turns granted by Snow Cloak, Sub + Ice Body etc. Could even use Sheer Cold as a proper wincon rather than throwing it once before dying and praying it lands. Phoebe could then be themed after status and trickery ala GSC Koga. Just food for thought~ But yeah it's really disappointing that the Elite 4 aren't themed. Gen 2 Koga is legit the only one with a coherent practical theme (not shit like "beauty" or "power" like bitch gimme a challenge not a life lesson, leave THOSE themes to gym leaders and rivals). He's all about taking the game out of your control - preventing or punishing switches with status/spikes, preventing you from landing attacks with double team/minimize, nerfing healing by using toxic's scaling damage. It's one of the most well thought out E4 teams, it's just a shame that a) there weren't many good bug/poison types at that point so they're all shitmons that lose to any fire move, and b) the AI just spams Double Team instead of actually doing what the team's supposed to. ...Rematch team is kinda ass though. Drops the Forretress so he has no spikes, leads with his only answer to psychic moves (which also explodes anyway), and Muk doesn't even have a fucking attack????? Literally has minimize/screech/swagger/toxic - WHY DO YOU EVEN HAVE SCREECH WHEN YOU CAN'T ATTACK?! Pretty clear that whoever worked on him in HGSS had no clue what made Koga the way he was, just copy pasted the GSC team for round 1 and slapped on some gen 3/4 mons and random moves for round 2.

I’ve thought about this for years and it is such a good idea. You shouldn’t be able to potentially sweep one of the 4 best trainers in any given region with one type. Gyms I think type specialty is fine but elite 4 should be things like weather and/or various battle types like double or triple battles

The issue is that the AI is usually not very good with strategies, so GF would have to invest in improving the E4 AI at least. And even then, they'll probably be very cheesable. That's why EK is all about coverage and high offensive, that's what pokemon AI kind of know how to do well.

The problem is that Zoroark still sweeps through both Caitlin and Shauntal. Ban that mon and you’re right

@@largenaq2935 nah zoroark can’t handle life orb metagross. Also in challenge mode shauntaul’s chandelure has a choice scarf which makes it faster than zoroark who it can OHKO with fire blast.

@@harry-mb4sn I’m talking from experience though. I EV trained my Zoroark in speed and spatk, and because it has nearly perfect IVs with a +speed nature it outspeeds scarf Chandelure. Combined with Nasty Plot + Dark Pulse + Flamethrower, it swept through both Shauntal and Caitlin.

@@largenaq2935 well zoroark can't win you agaisnt dark and fighting.... So for the rest of the 5 you a haxorus ,emboar, (if lucky) then excadrill+ krookadile(get sandstorm up) , or hydreigon ... Like kinda limits your team if you don't get the encounters sorted.. Then again no rock types mean volcarona can hard counter caitlin and also grimsley

At the first one I needed 11 attempts just to beat the first gym, just to get demolished by Lenora right after. I did better at the second one, but Clay totally wiped out my team with only 2 of his mons ;-;

@@miguelbarbosa7597 Cheren in Blaze Black 2, especially on Challenge Mode, is fucking *murderous* in my opinion. Your only options for super effective damage that early is to either overlevel Tepig into Pignite or to somehow get unbelievably lucky and find/catch a Riolu, Mankey, or Tyrogue, and none of them are likely to sweep his entire team.

@@perrycarters3113 In my first nuzlocke attempt, as lucky as it seems, the first pokemon I found in Flochessy Ranch was a Riolu. I just grinded it up until lvl 15 (so it would learn Force Palm) and then wiped out Cheren's entire team. However, it was on Normal Mode, I'd probably have been defeated if played on Challenge Mode :/

@@treasuremage7546 it's pretty speedy plus level curve makes it pretty difficult (if the E4 were like gen 5 where every E4 member have same level Pokemon then it would have been easy). I actually lost to Karen multiple times in my first play though in soul silver. If you don't have a good water type or ground type it's quite difficult.

It also two shots a lot of things, which spells trouble in set mode.

@@treasuremage7546 Understand when all your pokemon are level 40 cause you're playing off the original cart with no speedup options it can be painful. Plus I didn't use a water type (No particular reason other than wanting to challenge myself and wanting to use other pokemon) with my ground type being ice it gave me alot of trouble. Funnily enough Lance was a breeze

Yeah. People don't realize how strong Haxorus actually is. It's on the low end of speed when it comes to sweepers and isn't particularly bulky so it loses to other sweepers but Haxorus has stupide high attack. Like it has 2 more base attack than Mega Salamence. Leon is a really strong Champion with a diverse team and a high level spike from the previous battles.

@@bdf1006 fun fact: Haxorus has the highest attack of all non legendary dragons, so with a dragon dance to compensate his speed it can complete sweep

@@tomasapud8240 Trust me. I know Haxorus is my favorite Pokemon and I've swept people in tournaments if they let me setup. That's the issue though is the set up. I have also done well with a scarf Haxorus though

@@kiwikarp9509 about overall, all gyms, boss fights, grunts and e4, swampert deal with all of them and does good into Steven and decently into Wallace. That's why hes the best.

It has like 50 Def. Almost any Ground or Water type kills it. Hell, a Sandslash OK's it with Earthquake. And even if your slower, I'm pretty sure you get a Choice Scarf in this game, right?

@@hughmann8458 I think the issue might have been that I was usually not on a pokemon effective against houndoom by the time it was sent out? I don't remember exactly though, it's been a while. choice scarf is only from the player's mom, which I think is rng? not sure, haven't looked into the mechanics that much, but I'm assuming it's random. either way, I eventually turned her off since not having half of my money was causing some issues with items, I couldn't buy much. I wasn't doing a nuzlocke anyway so it didn't really matter whether I got items like a choice scarf or not.

Glacia's weaknesses really vary by Gen. She's weaker to Blaziken in gen6 when she has 2 Frosslass instead of 2 Sealeo, but in Gen3 you needed something electric to help with her.

Yep that was me a week ago the only mon on my team that knew an electric type move was my alakazam that had shock wave. It went down to his whischash EQ then I foolishly let his Gyarados set up three dragon dances. Then he Hyper beam swept me

It probably depends on level caps. Without overleveling any non beaten e4 member and only using non farmed rare candies, i can say wallace is pretty hard. His Milotic was impossible to kill. I had Ludi, but milo could easily stall the 8 giga drains and i needed to save for whishcash (i accidently overleveled my manectric and i lost tenta before e4, rip). I ended up losing 5 mons against him and i won with my ludi thanks to a crit. As i said again, it probably depends on level caps and weather you can stall out Milo or 2hko it before it can start spamming recover Steven is also pretty hard, but your starter can contribute in beating metagross much more than what it can do against most of Wallace mons (except sceptile ofc).

Yeah, I also just finished an hc Emerald Nuzlocke and Wallace indeed can be a bit tedious without electric types. I had to use a tbolt Gyarados. But then I got lucky and could sweep with Ddance Return on Gyara, so it depends... I actually also did the post game Steven fight, which was pretty damn hard as well

I agree, Shauntal's team is deceptively bulky, especially when you lack options outside of zoroark to deal with her, which gets knocked over by a light breeze.

I think that it would be weird to rank it that way. In Gen5 you get easy access to some really good dark-types, like scrafty, krookodile, zoroark, drapian or even ghost-types like chandelure, jellicent and cofagrigus. Making it extreemly likely that you have some kind of awnser for Caitlyn. On the other hand, you have like steven's metagross which in Gen3 has almost no answers, because even the available fire and ground types kinda suck and can't deal with it or are unlikely to encounter. In a vacuum Caitlyn would be pretty good or even a run-killer in Gen3, but in Gen5 she is way easier to deal with. I don't think she is free, some of her pokemon are kind of scary and have some great coverage, but you just get so many options.

I think the issue is the abundance of Dark and Ghost types in gen 5. At least compared to other generations. Bisharp, Krookodile, Scrafty, Mandibuzz, Cofagrigus, Golurk, Chandelure, etc.

@@hughmann8458 yup, exactly; I just completed a hardcore nuzlocke of black 2 and if you have a ghost type and dark type (I had Chandelure and Weavile), you might not even need to plan about anything. Marshall is a bit tricky, as most of his Pokémon won't die in one hit and are able to but hard (Throh, Sawk, Conkeldurr) and Mienshao is a glass canon. Iris is the only fight in the league you need to plan quite thoughtfully.

Would they all move to run killer? I'd put Aaron there because of Sniper Drapion, Bertha needs planning around because of Sturdy, Flint because of the insane coverage and Lucian because of Trick Room and screens (though I managed to sweep him with Calm Mind Gardevoir).

lol Jan literally lost to Leon on his first run. Leon being such a huge level spike even after getting Eternatus is the main reason. Even on his second winning attempt he cheesed it with a Dragon Dance Gyarados which he specifically made Aegislash weak enough so Gyarados could set up on it.

His Charizard covers all of its weaknesses, Dragapult outspeeds any Pokémon and hits really hard, Aegislash can be pretty tough if you use a glass cannon mon... It's pretty hard in my opinion. Not super hard like Cynthia or Iris though.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to N's version tho of the elite 4, since he mentioned Marshal only having 4 pokemon, which is only during the first run where you fight N instead, and B/W nuzlockes end at the ghetsis fight, which is why he didn't include alder, so ye, again, pretty sure he was talking about N's version, which is the first fight only

Honestly the type specialisation works pretty well in the E4 because it’s a gauntlet. You only have 6 slots to beat 4 different types + a champion, which can be challenging

@Ethan Halt I like the idea of dual typing for E4 personally. It's how I built my dream team E4 and it worked out pretty beautifully bc you can pick two types that cover each other perfectly and use type coverage to cover other weaknesses on the team. Restricts way less and provides a lot more variety in the types of pokemon they have.

But you really gotta plan for what mon you sweep with. You gotta have a strong fire coverage for bronzong, and if the mime puts up the wrong screen at the wrong time it can kneecap your sweep.
