RIP-FLIP FENCE STOP STOP SYSTEM: www.woodpeck.c...
Woodpeckers RipFlip Table saw fence stop system adds a feature long-missing from table saws. But, our product engineers went even further, designing stops that couple to each other to make infinitely-controllable dadoes. In this 7-minute video Jeff Farris takes you into his shop and shows you a nifty trick with the Rip Flip to match the dimension of plywood perfectly, without ever measuring anything.

That's cool. Now all I need is a Woodpeckers Rip-Flip. And a table saw. And a woodworking shop.

This works really well. It used to take at least a few test cuts to get my dado adding/removing shims between each cut, which is a real pain. This is much easier. One tip, unless you're in a huge hurry cutting a big dado, here's an even easier way to do it. Just install your inside and outside dado blade (no chippers). Get a gauge set from Amazon (about 40 bucks) which includes a 1/4in block. The two blades without chippers are always 1/4in, so, instead of measuring, you can just put the machined (IE, perfect) 1/4in block between the two stops (vs the caliper the gentleman in the video is using) and you'll be setup to cut really fast. You can use this trick with any dado combination, if you're plowing something really big, put in the both blades and 2 chippers; that cuts a 1/2 dado. Instead of the 1/4in gage block, obviously, use the 1/2in and you can do the same thing. It's super fast to setup this way, but, honestly, I almost always just wind up with the 1/4 setup, I'm not cutting so many dados that 2-3 trips across the blade is a huge hassle. If you don't have a set of gauge blocks, get them. They are one of the most useful tools I have in my shop for setting up precision cuts. Something like this is what I have, they are fantastic: www.woodpeck.com/onetime-toolr-setup-blocks-2012.html

Add a couple magnets to eliminate the barrel to connect up. Makes things easier and less tools to keep track of around saw. Love my Rip flip I use it all the time for dados.

Ordered the Rip-Flip Stop system designed for the SawStop saws and it fit well on my Grizzly G0651 cabinet saw. I only had to replace the rail bolts on the saw with longer versions (M8 x 1.25, 1 inch long) to accommodate the extra thickness added by the Woodpecker brackets. The system works great!

Neato technique, and the dado functionality was exactly why I bought one. Now here's an idea to make this even quicker and easier for doing single blade (i.e. multiple pass) dados without measuring. Just use a setup block or drill bit the same width as your blade (presumably 1/8") to set the gap in the stops.
@WoodpeckersLLC
@WoodpeckersLLC 3 года назад
That would be pretty slick, if the saw blade is actually .125". They're usually a little under. Maybe obsess over some hardwood slivers until they just fit the kerf, then use that.

@@WoodpeckersLLC Okay, I was just playing with this and figured out an even better way because I have an iGaging DRO installed on my saw. I first measured my Ridge Carbide blade with a digital caliper (3.21mm). I then set the gap between the stops as described in the video using a sample piece. Next, I zeroed my DRO and used the micro adjust on the left stop to move the fence 3.21mm (i.e. closing the gap by that amount). I then locked it down the micro-adjuster and it produced a perfect dado on a test piece.

Yes, it does work with a single blade. I have done it many times. It works great for making a quick dado when you don't want to change blades. You'll have to make more than two passes, but it goes very quick as there is no measuring.

See comment from Brad Murphy. Sounds like it might work and all you need to change is the length of the bolts holding the fence rail so they accommodate the extra thickness of the Rip Flip support brackets..

I won't tell anyone if you don't, but the "let's see how we did" part is not the same piece of wood you were dadoing on the saw. :)

@@WoodpeckersLLC Weird. The growth rings look quite different when you rotate apx 6:17 to match 6:04. No little dent on the edge either (the one you see along the fence at 6:04). Not a big deal; I was mostly just having some fun here. Maybe it was just the lighting.
@WoodpeckersLLC

I see the little dent you're talking about. Not sure why it doesn't show when it is flipped over...I'm going to guess it is the white reflection off the fence. But, I promise you, it is the same piece of wood. Not saying we don't occasionally have to do two takes, but we didn't this time.

So this device brackets fence travel to allow you to cut an accurate dado for your stock. That’s pretty cool. However, most dado sets can cut from 1/4” wide up to 7/8 or even 29/32”. Your stock would have to be thicker than that to create a need for this 2-stop system. Stock thicker than 3/4” is pretty rare. Otherwise, just set up your dado stack with the necessary chippers and shims as traditionally done. Yes, it requires test cuts which I dislike, but you’re probably going to take a test cut with this system too before plowing into your actual work piece unless you are braver than I am.
@WoodpeckersLLC
@WoodpeckersLLC 3 года назад
The advantage is the tedious and repetitive stacking and shimming process is eliminated and you're not working inside the saw over and over again. If you're ploughing dozens and dozens of grooves, it might be better to get the stack perfect and make single cuts. However, for one or two dadoes (pretty typical for a furniture maker), this process is faster and deadly accurate.
@steveh8724
@steveh8724 2 года назад
Think about what's involved to make a single change in the stack width. Then do that 2 or more times, plus test cuts at each trial width. That is a frustrating lengthy process compared to the Rip Flip approach shown here. Of course you have to buy the Rip Flip to enjoy this benefit.

What type of saw? We have two models, one for SawStop and another that fits most any saw that has a T-Square style rip fence. See this Deep Dive for details on installing it on a Delta Unisaw with a Biesemeyer fence: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x8UeTNsWpLY.html and this one for a look at installation on a SawStop: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w13OcRsGSyA.html

Nice technique. Being the owner of two classic USA-made Delta Unisaws equipped with 52" Biesemeyer T-Square fences, is there any reason a customer could not install, or to the extent necessary, modify either the Powermatic or the SawStop versions of the Woodpeckers Rip-Flip to work on a genuine Biesemeyer fence rail? Having installed Biesemeyers on saws formerly equipped with Unifences, I'm well acquainted with the need for careful alignment and where required, metal drilling and thread tapping.
