Removing corner bead BEFORE tearing sheetrock off walls during demolition simplifies and speeds up this nasty but necessary part of any renovation project. This video shows how I use Extractor pliers to remove corner bead quickly and efficiently and gets me through the 'ugly' part of the project sooner.
This Influencer's page on Amazon has the cool Extractor pliers and Hive Tool pry bars seen in the video if you can't find them locally:
www.amazon.com/shop/nextlevel...
You get the low Amazon price you expect PLUS Amazon pays small ad fees to NLC that help offset the cost of video production here so I really appreciate it!
Official Next Level Carpentry gear is available through TeeSpring here:

Anyone motivated to go 'above and beyond' to support the Channel can do so by becoming a patron on Patreon here:

Watching your video in 2023 and you are talking about reaching 25k subscribers. I'm happy to see you are at 331k subscribers! 😁 I need to remove the walls around my furnace and I have never done any manual work around a house so the short and concise video is very appreciated. Thanks for your help!

@darrelstickler personally I have used a simple flat screwdriver. Lift the metal sheet slowly in each section, and it should not do much damage, as seen in the video.

@@pensums I’m demo’ing a room. Unfortunately, there is no door, so outside corner bead. It’s a trick to demo from inside the room to just around the corner bead but NOT damage the drywall around the corner. That Tiamat tool was awesome to crack the mud cleanly on the “good” wall so you only have to float a 12-18” for a class 4 finish. Somehow this awesome tool has disappeared from the market. Maybe a patent or other legal issue. I threw a Crescent version into my Cart to try. I tried vicegrips and a fence nail extractor and it won’t grab the metal bead enough to crack the mud and yank the corner bead.

Perfect timing - in the middle of a bathroom remodel and had painstakingly cut/spiced some new corner bead near the floor where I was replacing some sheetrock sections because I was afraid to disturb the old bead. Stumbled upon your most excellent video, bought the pliers, and was able to carefully rip out the 25 year old bead off four corners in the matter of a few minutes. Thanks for posting this!

Great tip Matt. I bought the extractor last year to help in the renovation of our 1910 farmhouse. After almost 40 years of home renovation, I now consider it an essential for demo and general carpentry. But damn now I have to buy the skinny flat bars. :)

Thanks for your work! Would love to see how you level a floor (wood and concrete) for a tub. Thanks again!
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 6 лет назад
You're welcome, T Willey... and possibly in luck. I'm replacing an old tub with a new one on this very project and am planning a video to show a ridiculously simple way to level the support surface which, in this case, is 3/4" plywood subflooring. The method is viable for any tub with a flat bottom surface. Some old fiberglass tubs have an irregular bottom which would require a different, more involved, method but what I'll show is how I shim from zero to 5/16" under the whole bottom of the tub to level it for an 'undermount' style installation... hope to get it out late this week, if not it will be the week of July 1st because of prior obligations. Best, Matt

Next Level Carpentry, does it work with mountaineering boots? Ice climbing boots?
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 6 лет назад
Absolutely... in fact, I first learned and used this method for my LaSportiva Miura rock climbing shoes and Lhoste mountaineering boots and only after started using it for work boots. You just can't beat it for those 'slippery' round laces! Best, Matt
@FlatOutFE
@FlatOutFE 6 лет назад
Next Level Carpentry, I also used it on my LaSportiva Muira and LaSportiva K2. I used to climb with a guy in his late 40's and early 50's who used it exclusively. Anyway, that guy progressed faster in his climbing than anyone I knew. He did 5.12a at the end of his first or second year. It probably was his lacing method.
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 6 лет назад
Hilarious... and here I thought it was from using anti-gravity chalk! Now you're telling me it's ALL about well tied laces and NOT about being able to dance up a face with nothing but dime thick edges and sloping crytals to 'stand' on, right?! It was a sad day when I upgraded to the velcro Miura's and never went back to lace-ups...
@cheewurz
@cheewurz 6 лет назад
Matt...I try and stay away from Boots with Laces so I guess you could say I've no need to deal with Loose Ends! The reason I don't wear Lace-Up-Boots is because they are a Collector of Molten Metal when Welding or using the Cutting Torch. Pull-On-Boots however won't gather Red Hot Droppings...I know this from experience! Owieeeee! Plus they are Taller too...that's a plus in the Mud & Snow & my Pant-Legs don't get caught on the Tops when Squatting!

I wonder if you couldn't also use a pair of Channel locks in the same way. I always use them for pulling trim nails, rocking the nail out with the curved jaw. They're also great for removing freeze plugs from engine blocks in the same manor.

The leverage on these is much better than Channel locks, Tom, because they were designed specifically for this kind of pulling action... but channel locks will certainly do in a pinch. I had one of those nail pullers but left it at some job never to be seen again. Are most of the corner beads in your area metal? Here in Hawaii they are all plastic or they will rust. The plastic ones come off even easier than the metal ones.
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 6 лет назад
Thanks for commenting, Randy... yes, the majority of corner bead here IS metal with the exception of flexible stuff for arches and such. With plastic in use where you are I'm guessing you pretty much disregard all the fuss shown in this video? Metal corner bead is more of an issue when attached to metal studs with screws to the point that all that these pliers do is snap off the taping mud and expose screw heads for removal. Thanks for weighing in here... Best, Matt

I understand that you may not want to take time to set up cameras during remodeling projects, after all, time is money, and I'm sure that the client wants the job done in due time. however, filming a complete project, or perhaps segments, that feature useful techniques, might be really cool. something to think about. love you stuff. look forward to new videos.
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 6 лет назад
Thanks for your comment, Daniel, and insightful perspective. Truth be told I'd love to 'film a complete project' but, without a camera and video editing/production team it's just not feasible. I've been working on a sawhorse build video on and off for almost 3 MONTHS because I have to wear ALL the hats while running, managing and doing jobs for clients. On top of that the dynamics of RU-vid are actually contrary to the effort. For example, check out the 3-part Triangle Trellis series I did on Next Level Carpentry last summer. The whole SERIES has only accumulated 8,000 views in close to a year while the quick little Pyramid Plugs video is over 11k in only a couple months. Someday I hope to see NLC grow to the point where it can support a video production team because I end up doing something unique and video-worthy every single day out on the job. So I mean what I say about sharing this stuff on Instagoogletwitface wherever you can because I think that at around 100k subscribers I'll be able to transition to full-time Next Level Carpentry stuff like my 'idol' Scott Wadsworth of Essential Craftsman has. All in good time? Best, Matt

Hi Matt! Demolition is always the grunt bit. I notice you grunt almost as much as I do. Get yourself a young lad (Probably not the best phrasing to use but I'm sure you'll take it the right way)!!! They enjoy the chance to show how tough they are. BTW that's a great set of pliers you demonstrate. Now I'm heading to Amazon to get a set! Fantastic to see the numbers climbing so fast. Well done you deserve every success. ATB Jim Sear UK

Jim Sear Thanks for commenting on this one, Jim! Unfortunately I'm in that situation where I don't have enough grunt work to justify hiring a lad but also have to take on projects with grunt work that needs to be done so I'm the one who ends up doing it... so I grunt and get through it. I really do appreciate growing numbers especially since video uploads have been few and far between... that says a lot for patience and forbearance on the part of the next level carpentry audience who I am indebted to. I have high hopes for the months to come when I can shift my focus back to videos about actual carpentry because there's some fun ones in the pipeline. I'm watching your channel for a new uploads but assume life has prevented you from much activity there too. Best, Matt

@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 6 лет назад
Jim Sear thanks for that link Jim it looks legit and those are the real deal from what I can tell... I wonder if Excalibur bought out the original patent holder who I believe was in Missouri USA. I'll check into this a bit deeper when I'm back at my desk top computer and include the link you shared if it is as it appears... In your line of work I think you would find them extremely handy because these things will pull out the teeniest finish nail if even just a sixteenth of an inch of it is exposed to grip on... I'm embarrassed to say I don't know the metric equivalent of one sixteenth of an inch but suspect it's only a few millimeters 😆

It's a large gnat's piss ! 8-p
@tupperwallace9048
@tupperwallace9048 6 лет назад
Interestingly, 1/16 of an inch is very nearly 1.6 mm. This approximation undershoots the metric measurement by a ratio of only 127 to 128. The reason is that a tenth of a millimeter is 1/254 of an inch exactly, not 1/256. If it were, then imperial fractions and metric measures would work together a lot better.

@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 3 года назад
If the openings are wrapped with sheetrock and have bullnose corners the best way is to pull off both the sheetrock and bullnose metal then use new jambs or jamb extensions and casing to switch from sheetrock returns to wood trim. It's a messy job but I never regret taking extra time and effort to do things right and thank you all find the same satisfaction.

I just removed two 4' x 8' sheets of drywall due to mold and the contractors fixed the sheets to the studs using about a gallon of adhesive!! I had to chisel the SOBs off the wall and what a mess. Now, I've got the corners to contend with and having the same issues with cement-like adhesive. I was hoping to find a remedy for how to pull off drywall cemented with a ridiculous amount of adhesive.

Unfortunately I don't know of a remedy for the miserable predicament you find yourself in... I have never seen a structural failure because drywall was not glued on which makes me wonder why anybody would do that... Good luck with your project...

Love your videos. Not sure why you call a glazing bar a beekeeper's tool, but I'm always down to learn a new craft. I've always used a pair of dull end nippers, or sometimes a pair of hoof nippers (Longer Handles) for pulling corner bead. I would like to find those trim nail pullers though. Looks like they would be better than the Crescents I've been using. Now I need to go and figure out why my daughter changed my username?

That embarrassing moment when a video producer realizes a viewer has made a suggestion potentially better than the original video 😰... Channellock nippers would/should work as well or better than these nail pullers for pulling corner bead off so I'm pinning your comment for the benefit of other viewers. Incidentally Extractor pliers really are much better than any other tool for removing trim nails from wood though and is what the tool is actually designed for. Thanks for adding this comment 'Katelyn'... hope you're able to figure out what happened to your identity 😁 BTW The 'glazing bar' is described as a beekeeper's hive tool on Kelly's Beekeeper Supplies website where I originally found and purchased one. I never saw a glazing bar that worked as well as the hive tool but won't argue that there isn't one out there that performs as well. Glad you like the videos... hope you'll come back for more? Best, Matt

Thanks for the reply. It's all in the spirit of collaboration. Someday I may get the courage to put some videos on RU-vid. I ordered a Hive bar to see how it compares to my trusty glazing bar.

Scobey Max is a LONG way from Katelyn... glad you got that straightened out 😁. Let me know how hive tool and glazing bar compare... I didn't start out with a glazing bar so the hive tool was a huge improvement over the regular 'wonder bar' type tool commonly available so I'm curious what your opinion is. Best, Matt

If I’m not removing one of the walls the corner bed is on should I scribe a line in the drywall to prevent drywall paper tearing?
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 3 года назад
Doesn't sound right to me Michael. By a scribed line I assume you mean a cut/scored line and a cut line needs to be taped to repair while torn paper only needs to be skim coated. I could see scoring a rather deep line about 1 1/2" back from the corner on the side you're preserving, scoring through the thicker mud at the corner. This could minimize chipping of that thick mud keeping the repair smaller... as long as you don't cut through the paper which would defeat the purpose because then you'd need to add a string of tape for the repair. This is all off-the-cuff and IMHO so take it for what it's worth? Best, Matt

Can I use the corner extractor pliers to remove the rounded corner bead?
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 3 года назад
Probably... if you can grab an edge because the jaws don't open wide enough to grab the full 1" radius 'bullnose' style cornerbead. You might find a pair of 'nail nippers' with jaws big enough to grab but prying out an edge first is likely a better plan... Best, Matt

Your best bet is to look on eBay or other such sites to find a pair because, as you suspect, this tool has been out of production for at least a decade and substitutes are pretty much useless IMHO.

use the curved end of a flatbar and pry sideways thats way you dont damage your nail puller and it makes less of a mess
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 6 лет назад
Thanks for adding this to your Liked Videos playlist, Mark! There's definitely more than one way to skin the proverbial cat and of all I've seen and used I prefer the one shown in this video. FYI this in no way 'damages (my) nail puller' and, although a bit messy, I find it the least messy of other methods. I'm curious: how do you get the curved end of your flatbar started in the first place and how do you manage to 'make less of a mess' when taping mud starts popping off? Best, Matt
@markbulichsr.836
@markbulichsr.836 6 лет назад
Next Level Carpentry yeah I would be too scared of damaging my nail puller I just don't get so aggressive with it and I hit it with a hammer somewhere around the nail the nail will always be somewhere around 16 in that's where they're trained to put them

@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 6 лет назад
How?! Old age and treachery, Brian, old age and treachery 😁😎 Actually I'll have the lumberyard sheetrock delivery guys do the 'stocking' and haul the sheets up the stairs and near the room. I'll hire a friend to help muscle the 6 biggest sheets to where I can cut 'em to fit and I borrowed a sheetrock jack to for lifting and holding pieces in place during fastening. Once the big bruisers are in place I can handle the 4x8x5/8 well enough on my own and the room/s are so chopped up there's barely anything over a half sheet after the 'fulls' are done. Let me know if you're coming over and I'll pick up a few extra donuts... Best, Matt

Matt, side story here, when I was hanging sheet rock in the second story of my shop I had a couple of friends who were supposed to help but no showed. I used a sheetrock jack to lift each sheet up to the second story, run up the stairs, pull the sheet in over the balcony rail, stack it, run down stairs, lower/tilt jack, place next sheet, tilt, raise jack and repeat about 50 times. Then I had to take apart the jack, carry it up the stairs and re-assemble it to hang the rock. THEN my friends showed up.

Talk about 'old age and treachery', Tom... nicely done. Do a GPS search of that day and you'll find your fair-weather-friends parked up the street watching with binoculars as you grunted it out. Clever use of the sheetrock jack, my friend! Best, Matt
