Two of the game's best battling a control mirror for the title of Pro Tour Kaladesh. What more could you want? Shota Yasooka, the Japanese Hall of Fame Pro has deftly piloted a Grixis Control list of his own design through a field of nearly 500. Carlos Romao, fresh off a Grand Prix victory, tries to go back-to-back. His Jeskai Control deck wasn't something anyone saw coming, but it has proven a powerful tool.

Okay, since everyone is leaving comments on this, I'll just say it here... if you get all the way to 58-59 minutes in, Marshall and LSV discuss the untapped fast land that shota put down. They said they didn't catch it right away so they couldn't rewind to check the tape, but the judges gave him a warning and moved on.

Shota makes 1 mistake the whole pro tour and I guess that means he should be stripped his pro tour title. Shota is my favorite player and never intentionally cheats or cheats at all. It was a simple mistake that the judges or Carlos should have caught. But taking someone's title because the judge didn't see something that was accidental is blasphemous.

Anyone who believed even for a second that Yasooka cheated: Are you suggesting hall of Famer shota yasooka knowingly made an illegal move... in the FINALS? While literally the match is being live commented on by another hall of famer? AND broadcasted out live to countless fans? And his opponent Is a former world champion? And there is a table judge watching the match? AND three other spotters? You think one of the smartest magic players ever looked at that situation and thought to himself... "yeah, yknow what, nobody will notice." The fact that nobody DID notice does not make it any less insane for him to think nobody would notice in that spot. Obviously that's silly and cannot be true. The only reasonable alternative: mistake. Missed by everyone. Which, obviously it was anyway lol. Anyone with eyes could see that

@Taalanos
@Taalanos 8 лет назад
What is the point of the judge watching? Shota plays a land untapped when it shouldn't be then uses it to cast spells, results in a game warning after the match. Shota goes to untap 2 lands while Dovin Baan ult is up and the judge is like "Whoa there son, you can only untap 2 permanents....oh that's what you're doing? okay then" Carlos goes into the next turn with a fumarole up because of the archangel trigger and the judge is like "Whoa there son, why is that fumarole alive? oh because of the avacyn trigger? I would know that if I was actually watching the game? I'm only half paying attention here, be more interesting" How come this guy is noticing all these things that aren't happening and missing things that are?

You mean how would I be able to follow basic lines of play in the most important match of the tournament if I had only 1 job and that was it? "They're only human" is just a terrible argument to present, no one is calling for them to be stoned to death and it doesn't excuse them from criticism. It's not unreasonable to say that you expect better from someone that is supposed to be watching the match.

How come 6 people are standing right next to them and 2 people are commentating and NOONE SEES THE UNTAPPED CANAL. I don't know if he did it on purpose or not, but I do know there are several people whose only job is to make sure that the rules are complied with and several other people whose job involves watching what's going on. IS EVRYONE BLIND? This shit just keeps happening in top level Magic. How is it even possible? It took me about 0.1 secs to realise it and I don't consider myself a very focused observator. Also, how does Romao not see it...? Just to be clear, I'm not a Yasooka hater, in fact I was cheering for him. I'm just a hater of incompetent judges.

so to anyone crying about shoota making that land play. the actual dci penalty in a pt is for a warning. not a game loss. not stripping him of his title. by all accounts shoota is an honest player. it was likely a mistake. they cant prove otherwise anyways. so game play error - game rule violation. and in response to the chapin thing his penalty for failure to reveal is actually a game loss. I don't think he should have got the loss since it was literally the only card in his hand that could have been revealed his opponent knew all the other cards in his hand from the courser of kruphix I believe and it was still the top card that was most likely going to get played in that same turn but rules are rules as most of the criers are saying. so rules are rules. shoota should have received a warning. which he did. according to the rules.

@@xtehmoonlight7400 only rule referring to this is 400.5, specifying that order in library, graveyard and stack can't be modified except by effects and rules. I think the "and rules" part refers to sanctioned matches rules for formats such as standard and modern, where no "graveyard order matters" cards exist, thus allowing re-ordering cards in graveyard for convenience sake. This would make deliberately and arbitrarily reordering cards in library illegal.

Part of his gameplan was to just let card draw spells resolve. He relied to much on Shota decking that he just let him get everything he needs to win this.

MrTanno123 It's a good card, even a good control card, but it's a but overpriced without emerge, and that takes some measure of build-around to make worthwhile. you could probably build a version of grixis or Jeskai control that ran emerge, and it might be solid, but it would take some smaller creatures to support it.l, which these versions of the decks don't have. Torrential Gearhulk, in the other hand, only takes instants in the deck and plants the same body, and maybe about equal value on the board, if not greater.

+Scott Kay uh i dont understand: First yasooka cast harnessed lightning but avacyn is undestructible until end of turn so why Carlos didn't just say "ok" and harnessed will not make 4 damages to avacyn? And then even if Carlos played summary dismissal he didn't play it when yasooka put the second blast on avacyn so with sum dismiss, he didn't counter avacyn ability ? I m right ? Or I miss something ? :/

So Avacyn isn't just automatically indestructible when it comes into play. She has a triggered ability AFTER she enters that makes everything indestructible. Once she enters, before that ability resolves, Shota tries to kill her. Romao counters, and the specific counterspell he uses removes all spells AND abilities from the stack. That includes the indestructability trigger. Once all that happens, you have an Avacyn in play, the indestructability never resolved, and Shota is free to kill it. Even if Romao had used a different counterspell, Shota could have just made another play to kill Avacyn while her indestructability ability was still on the stack, rather than waiting.

+Something Thank you but i m confused if a spell is not countered and coming in play, his trigger ability isnt resolve right now? I plaid With à man who put in game gitrog (innistrad frog) and i use A "destroy target Monster" but he told me that when he is coming in game he can use his ability (playing 2lands) Before i Will kill him... Well, avacyn can be kill easier that i think ^^

At 32:45 Shota plays a Spirebluff Canal untapped (he has 3 lands at this point, so Spirebluff should come in tapped), passes, then uses all of his lands to play Glimmer of Genius. Isn't that, I don't know, cheating? None of the judges noticed this or said anything?

game rule violation for both players, obviously unintentional, since no other play like that was seen.

32:45 , the turn starts, Shota plays a fastland UNTAPped but it's his 4th land. Seems like cheating since he's playing Glimmer of Genius at Carlos' next end step.
@PenguinPanda2

It might not have been intentional, and the judges missed it, and Carlos missed it, so you can't only blame Shota for it.

if you listen at around 58-59 minutes in, Marshall addresses this. They said essentially that it was missed, they couldn't rewind back to check it, so the judges gave shota a warning and moved on.

exactly, for some reason...everyone here blames shota for this mistake...judges, commentators and even opponent didn't realise it...if they wanted to blame...blame everyone for not noticing

I find it hard to believe that one of the best players in the world (yasooka) suddenly starts making mistakes in the finals. It is not only "missing" that one of his lands should come into play tapped; in game one he "forgot" to exile two of his spells and put them in his yard instead. I am not saying that he is cheating, but come on judges, this is the finals..
@Sethsters
@Sethsters 8 лет назад
Not saying Shota cheated on purpose, but he should have been given a game loss in game 1. I understand that it was probably an accident, but the rules are the rules and that miss by the judges gave him a pretty significant advantage in the game.
@svtgtityper
@svtgtityper 8 лет назад
Where is the cheat? What I see is game 2 (about 32:44) Shota plays a Spirebluff Canal untap, with 3 other lands in play.

that mistake isn't enough to be given a game loss...are you crazy dude? plus, everyone missed it..so they have themselves to blame...even for his opponent...why the heck didn't he realize it
@Sethsters
@Sethsters 8 лет назад
xTehMoonlight In a control matchup card advantage is everything, and being able to fire off that Glimmer of Genius a turn early is a really big advantage. And yes, everyone seemed to miss it as it happened. His opponent should have caught it, but even so it is Shota's responsibility to know the rules and abide by them. Blaming the opponent for missing it fails to place accountability where it belongs.

For as fast as Shota usually plays his lands and spells there wasn't any noticeable pause when he set that land down so either he knowingly cheated or as I would guess he just made a mistake. It happens, if it was caught by the judges as it should have been, it would've resulted in a game loss for Shota as the result was Shota being able to draw additional cards and scry.

I hate to say it but in the last turn of game four he could have wandering fumaroled, blocking, then immolating glare, then tapped the blocking man land for mana for a negate. that could have forced another turn for him, which he probably wouldn't have won on, but even so, how did he not see that? I swear the best mtg gets played in actually complicated games like casual commander
