I have never heard such a long conversation in my native language, where I understood each individual word just fine, but had no clue what all those words said together even meant.
Everyone hates control because you need to know what you're doing and understand synergy between cards in addition to the fact that control decks have an unsettling tendency to dominate tournaments. Everyone hates aggro because the first thing that springs to mind upon hearing aggro is a mono-red player who doesn't want to think too hard about how to put pieces of cardboard on a table and who mangle their precious and expensive unsleeved cards upon desks with their Dorito-stained hands. Everyone hates midrange because of the huge, and therefore expensive, mana pools and the fact that they constantly involve putting in one fatty that sticks to the board like glue and stops your opponent from doing anything that they find fun, making it a one-player game. How is this game not responsible for at least three major wars?
sam sen Well i play mill so i know personally that you are all wrong, and it is the most hated by far. Can't tell you how much people complain about a "stupid, unfun, unfair playstyle" when they have half their deck in their graveyard turn 3.
Anteares Columbus how dare you insult magic 😂😂 nah bruh jk the games what you want it to be yeah its a bit shit in tornaments but its alright with friends.
Commander player here, and I cannot disagree. Goes like this: "There's too many creatures I can't attack" *damnation* "There's no creatures I can't attack"
You must be on the top of your game... Aaron's not afraid of anything, _not_ even people who doesn't eat gluten. Hardcore as fuck. Aaron Lang da gangsta. Da man who can beat any 4 year old in a fist fight. Da man who flips of the police whenever they aren't around. (#LongDistanceDisrespect). Da man who can drink multipe beers without puking. Da _legend_ who once talked to a real girl. Mah Niggah.
+ModernMinded Maaaaaaan Aaron Lang is a savage, he ain't afraid of the government. He once told his best friend his plot to kill the president while drunk. And one time, he even survived being shot in the head with a nerf gun. Total badass. Aaron Lang, you have my respect.
It's a bitch to watch but its fun to play. I know the game in and out I don't understand half this stuff. The card names aren't as iconic as yugiohs or Pokemon but it is far more addictive & expensive
I’ve watched this who knows how many times since I first watched this live. This deck has even designated my love for control being how I still play control since first making this exact u/w deck.
+Steven Melton Art and Paintings If you haven't already, we highly recommend picking up Magic Duels on Steam, Xbox One or iPhone. It's the best way to learn how to play Magic... and it's free! :)
+Magic: The Gathering The MTG on the computer sucks. It is better to just go to a MTG store or a game store and ask for a promo pack. It is good enought to play.
I was just as confused and have spent some time waiting for a comment like this to drop XD Btw I watched this video in 1991 (two years before Magic was invented).
As an adamant competitive magic player, this was an inspirational video when I first came across it. It makes me laugh how many people here are complaining about how unexciting it is. You clicked on a video for a trading card game tournament and you were expecting what exactly? Lmao
I have been a long time magic player but I haven't played in a cool minute, so I don't know anything about the current standard. I tried watching this tournament but didn't know what the fuck anyone was talking about.
Freedom Panic well this isnt the current standard. if u wanna get back into it a good way to learn the metas and how the newer stuff works is just go hang out at ur local card shop and maybe draft alittle of the new sets
laicuan1 I actually still prefer just playing casually with my friends with my current decks. I got some new cards that I like sifting through. I was just hoping to watch some profesional games to see how they play and what kind of strategies they come up with, so I was hoping there would be some more explanation on what was going on in the game itself, but no luck. My last block was 2013 and 2014. I recently got 2015 and the dragon set (which I was disappointed in). I guess it's not so much that I want to get involved in the new meta, I just want to be able to have a stream where things are more clear so that I can follow what's going on. I guess that's probably asking too much as this is more of a niche audience. Maybe I can find some smaller pro tournaments on stream that go in further detail in explanation. My favorite decks I built in the last several blocks include low cost unblockable hexproof buffed fast agro. An eldrazi deck that utilizes lots of mana acceleration, a fast agro infect deck, and a basic exalted deck. I also have a ton of other decks that are fun to play. Every now and then I like building new decks out of newer cards.
Freedom Panic The best sets that have come out in the past year or so has been Khans of Tarkir, Journey Into Nyx, Dragons of Tarkir, and Theros. Besides M15 anyway. It seems the best decks to use in Standard right now are Blue/White Control, Red/Blue Burn, and Black/Blue Control (Mill). I don't know much about straight Aggro decks, but if you need any help, I'd be happy to oblige. Good luck to you and have a nice day.
Ghostly Gaming Those archetypes are FALSE. A Mill deck? Really? Maybe your local meta, but by no means is there a competitive t1-t3 mill strategy (in standard.)
Freedom Panic agreed. Their format of showing the game is just for people that know all the cards, They should be showing the effects of the cards, how am I supposed to know whats going on, If I don´t know what the cards are!?
Adam Turner Stop being ridicilous. This is a childrens card game and your angry comment won't change that. Those people probably run around with a YUGIOH Duelldisk in their town and jerk off to hentai stuff.
+Torrox Morrox Boy if you think this card game is for children then lord help you lol. Props to any "children" that can learn this game and can build decks and actively keep track of what they do during a game. Not even Yugioh is for children. Tighten up. :)
Everybody is freaking out because Floch uses control... it doesn't matter, he made it to the FINALS thats more than any other pro on tour could say. Well done Ivan
What is this? Both players seem to enjoy the game, no super absurdly extra ultra fast summoning taking place, people around can follow and understands what's going on... Goodbye Yu-Gi-Oh, Hello Magic!
**Control Master Race**: Die Aggro! You don't belong in this meta! **Aggro peasant chief**: It was not by my choice, that I am once again given cards. I was called here by players who wish to play faster! **Control Master Race**: Faster?! You feast on slow decks and make them your buys! **Aggro peasant chief**: Perhaps the same could be said of all archetypes... **Control Master Race**: Your words are as empty as your handsize! The meta ill needs a savior such as you! **Aggro peasant chief**: What is a deck? A miserable little pile of cards! But enough talk... turn 1, take 2!
Esper Control was good for a short period of time a couple years ago but for the most part this was Control's Swan Song. It hasn't been good for the better part of 7 years now. In that respect this is kind of a momentous occasion in Magic's long history.
I love that Floch wasn't playing the standard U/W control we've been seeing for forever, with Elspeth and Aetherling. No, he goes for one with 4 quickens and an elixier of immortality. And that Sheep-Angel sideboard action. I love it.
Wow I though Jackson Cunningham really deserved the win. He was able to get around the blue/white control despite all his mulligans and mana screw! Then floch mulls with Jackson having a really good 7 into his only archangel and 2 sheep....... WTF
I have such nostalgia now cause of this. Remember first learning of MTG when I moved back to NJ in 97 when I was in the 4th grade. Started out with 4th edition and even some old cards from alpha/beta and such. A shame I don't have them since they were in good condition and probably worth a penny or two. Great game though stopped around 2003 I think. No idea how much it changed but I am sure it did by a lot. Cheers to all
i hate seeing people play control decks, if you want to circlejerk for 20 minutes do it on your own time, dont waste everyone elses, jsut shitting on everyone who wants to have a fun casual game.
Frosty Spazkins every single FNM ive ever been to in the history of EVER has been treated like a pro tour and people have played high tier 1 decks, in the last event i went to i made 6th place, the 5 people above me all had the EXACT same decklist, and its nearly identical to the control deck im seeing here. So please, do tell how this is any diffrent then FNM
***** : "So please, do tell how this is any diffrent then FNM" Uh, FNM doesn't have a $250,000 prize pool? If you don't like people giving themselves the best chance of winning, don't watch or play in competitive events. A tournament isn't where you should be looking to "have a fun casual game."
mixmastermind theres nothing subtle about ocntrol, you sit there and circlejerk for 20 minutes, dont let your opponent play the gam,e at all, then play one card that they cant deal with because youve set up to have 12 counterspells to back it up... Control is a pansies deck, if MTG was meant to be all control, then it shouldnt have a 5 colour setup, or any other spells, or anything. No, control is designed for people who dont like playing the game, and only want to show up witha pile of cards to earn money, without any skill, or desire to have fun.
I am laughing because whenever I see a video of card gamers I imagine "cock magic" episode from South Park with the ultra over-the-top commentator judging the rooster card games.
Playing against U/W is like playing against your friend in a video game where 5 minutes into playing he unplugs your controller beats your character standing still for 20 mins then walks away smiling and feeling like the better player.
I know ivan's gettin alot of hate for the deck he played, but to be co,pletely honest i love tat deck choice. its for people who love to troll the oponent and make sure to not give them any chance of winning. I would make a couple changes in the deck list though.
It only runs two Planar Cleansing's correct? And honestly, I'd almost say D-Sphere is a better option than Planar Cleansing. Less cost prohibitive, and better overall utility (at least until Supreme Verdict rotates).
Pro tours isn't really meant for newer players or random watchers. It's meant for people who understand the game and wanna see what decks are doing good. They aren't gonna reveal every card they play as it's not needed, especially for players who have played for a while and can understand what a card does just by the name given.
This is a fine example of why I will giggle with glee when RTR rotates. Watch as half of control, the good half, just disappears from Standard. Those will be truly the Halcyon days.
Tyler O'Guinn Sphinx rev does hurt tho. It wont disappear but I dont think it would be as powerful unless the new standard unleashes a similar card or any control card thats bonkers.
But isn't that the thing, though? Whenever standard rotates out we tend to see the format become aggressive, but as the next two block sets come out we also tend to see more control.
And into the Commander they go hahaha...which I guess is kinda good but kind of sad....bye bye, Lazav and Mirko Vosk....and Consuming Abberation...I love you!
Rosewater's love for blue has ruined MTG so much. The fact you can have one guy basically play with himself (Floch) in a finals match and win easily shows how much this game has been broken with crap 'meta' cards.
Didn't say anything about creatures...I was talking about blue. Blue has been more prominent in finals and tourneys than any other color. When you can just play your own hand and ignore an opponent (which isn't even supposed to be blue's specialty), it doesn't make for a fun game either.
+Anteares Columbus I understand what you mean, but blue is supposed to represent the mind and magic associated with it. What do you think they could do differently outside of what they already do?
You realize that blue is pretty much the weakest colour at the moment in modern and the meta is pure aggro. Jeskai Control is not enough to keep them in place. Also, this game is wonderful.
I somehow feel sorry for him. Must be pretty hard to sit there, knowing a lot of eyes are following you and every step you make, judge every misplay you do..
+Ichor1d Yeah true, though I imagine the reality is that people will appreciate that he's not a "pro" and more a up-and-coming player more. But the pressure is no joke.
I hate that they don't show us the cards, like unless you know every card or have a database on hand you need to pause the video and look up the card :/
So, what were those last 2 cards that they played that finished the game ? I am guessing they were instants but the video doesn't show what they were even though they were crucial to the game. Thank you
Yum Telgren Same. I may play the games but I never bother to learn all the slang and the "pro" terms that people make up as time goes by. I remember it took me months to understand that AYBABTU was a reference to "All your base are belong to us". . and if you don't know what that is, you must be very young indeed.
***** I get the reference, but that was actually the first time I saw "AYBABTU". I tend to unwillingly pick up some slang from other people at my university, but I don't take the game as seriously at them, more casual than the casuals in a way.
I would guess a combination of both. But it's not like they crack packs until they get a playset of Elspeths. We all have to buy some individual cards.
isarex88 No. Players buy their own cards. You see Ivan's shirt? Blackborder is a huge store that sells singles. They are most likely the ones sponsoring him. Starcity Games and ChannelFireball are other famous sponsors.
as a g/w aggro player myself with a very similar deck to cunnigham, i do feel his pain about playing against a control deck. fucking sucks man....fucking sucks...
Yeah this is true but he played his heart out and learned quite a bit. I'm sure he wanted that win. There's a couple of things I would've changed in the sideboard like gods willing or brave the elements. But all in all the deck was solid
The thing is though he didn't come prepared to go toe to toe with a blue/white deck, His sideboard is obvious, The announcer claimed in game 3 that Setessan Tactics did lots of work, but I don't think I saw it do anything in the Semi's, Quarters, or Finals. There are 2 things I think held Jackson back, and I know his rationale behind it but don't agree it's the way to go, and that is not playing the scry lands. Numerous game's would've probably smoothed out, if he has the temple of plenty instead of praying for a 3rd or 4th land for advent, its something as simpled as scrying an experiment one/soldier away game 1 so you can pickup that advent of the wurm/boon satyr/loxodon smiter that affects the board better. Another card that i love against u/w control is something with hexproof, if he had easily cut say 2 of the setessan's ,and 1 of the unflinching courages for something like a witchstalker which is a 3/3 for 3 that can't be targeted it forces Ivan to actually get the supreme verdict. I think once the ram's come into play I try to move the stalkers + unflinching courages in; reduces the possibility of a 2/1 and almost all your creatures overpower the rams. That said Ivan flock got incredibly lucky during the last game because Jackson was without Selesnya Charm/Banishing Light; which I guess can happen in a 5 game match, but like i said before, the scry lands would've dug for one of the 2, which can be critical in a time of need. I also find it a tiny bit weird that Brian - David Marshall say's in game 3 "haha wouldn't it be funny if the pro tour was decided by sheep swinging in for the win; when that is indeed exactly what happens in game 5. I would love to see all the games jackson played in to get there, to mainly see the Setessan Tactics in action, and to see how well the mana base held up.
I'm sorry yes it was luck but that is magic it takes skill, and luck in what you draw. Don't discredit what he did. He played his game he deserved to be there in the end
Control is a valid way to play magic. you may not like it, but its the way it is. Is like playing shooter games and complain about campers... if they can do it, its because the rules allow it, and if the rules let you do it, then you have to deal with it.
The problem with control is that just one tempo gain may mean the end of the game for the opponent. Plus that some colors really fare poorly against be control to begin with. I mean: I pay two blue mana, let me just make your 15 mana spell you ramped like hell for not happen. The mere fact that everything that is not a land won't even have any effect is just the icing on the cake. If you destroy creatures or other permanents they at least trigger other effects, counter is just a Swiss army knife for way too little a cost. Name me one card with more utility, I will wait. And you pretty much take all the momentum away from your opponent.
Says "Finals, Game 1" technically, people use the word "Finals" incorrectly. The actual final, which this is, is called the Grand Final, not the finals, what the words Finals refers to, with the s at the end, is the group of 3 final sets, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals (you say finals here as there is more than 1) and then the Final, or Grand Final :)
If anyone actually sat through this whole video, then you seriously need to get out of the house right now and find a date and start living a normal life.
The double standard of this is that if you don't try it you won't understand it and complain about it but you have played another card game and gave it a chance hence you understand it
There were plenty of win cons. Even without the sideboard, which brings in 4 (6 if you count sheep), you still have 2 mutavault, 3 jaces that can ultimate and get something from opponent's deck, and milling them out since he has elixer. And you can't really even say only 3 jace since he keeps coming back with elixer.
There takes more skill to run that UW control list than it does most lists in standard. I dont know why youre so mad over a very good game. It is honestly silly youre even mad about this game
For people jumping on me about saying no win cons, I'm quoting the freaking commentators for the video. THEY said that about the deck, sideboard not withstanding.
Do all magic tournaments not explain what the cards they're playing are? I'm new to magic, trying to get into it, but I can't even watch a tournament to see what it's like because I don't know what they're doing :/
I like the control deck, it shows that it is possible to win without creatures. And since Mana Confluence is going to be quite commonly used, it basically makes ur opponent lose by having them do something
The announcer is really biased, leaning towards the more experienced player, why does he put his opinions in there. Just commentary on the match leave out your personal opinions Sheesh !
I'm a new player, only been playing since M15 first came out. Finding out cards that are still legal. I tried making a Control deck and have found it by far the hardest to make. I've found out, through FNM and other videos i've seen, this game is basically a Pay To Win game. I've ran almost every basic kind of deck out there, (Control, Life, Enchantment, Aggro, Mil, Burn) and I've found there is always a way to beat a certain kind of type of deck. So people need to stop complaining about Control decks.
I was thinking of buying my first cards, the game looks really fun. But when I turned this vid on, I don't know what the hell is going on or what anyone is saying. Now I'm intimidated.
+Evil Trout Don't be. It takes some time to learn, but the depth of Magic is what makes it so awesome. I've been playing for almost 20 years now, and me and my buddies still need to look up rules for clarification sometimes. But usually you are fine with the basics, which don't take that long to learn, and then you pick the rest up when you come across it and gain more experience. Both feet bud! :D
+Evil Trout Nope, not really.. I haven't bought a Magic card in about 14 years. Me and my buddies just have a weekly "Cube" night, and it's a blast! A "Cube" is a pre-set number of cards which you make 15-card packs out of, and then take turns drafting. 4 of us play, (we play 2v2) and it is a blast!
+Zero, Lord of Darkness If I were you, I would download the program Cockatrice from Woogerworks. Its a client to play Magic of all formats with any cards online for free.
control decks are fine, but a deck that is not built around "winning late game" and instead "wins by making your opponent do absolutely nothing for half an hour" is taking it too far. can´t wait for fucking revelation to finally rotate the fuck out.
wotc- please, do something about your commentators. We know sphinx's revelation is a powerful card. We get it. We don't need to hear about it 30000000 times. Please refer to SCG's commentators, notably Patrick Sullivan and Cedric Phillips for what good mtg commentary sounds like.
as annoying as it can be sometimes, the reason is that there are a lot of new people who just comes to watch these tournaments and have no clue what are the cards players have in their decks, so highlighting some cards is definitely helpful for newcomers.
I'm pretty sure it actually cost him the match. That one would have been one less life trigger, meaning one less counter, which leaves him an easy double block to kill the other ram, then he just Selesnya Charms the archangel or Banishing Lights it.
If he wouldn't missed that trigger, floch would have just blocked the lion instead, so didn't cost him the match. That ajani's prescence at the end was unnecesary, but he was still pretty dead
Matthew Murphy Floch was tapped out on the relevant turn. Assuming the trigger wasn't missed and the same blocks were made, one sheep down. Might not have been enough, but it would have made at least a game out of it.
Floch was very lucky throught the whole tournamnet. I have watched all his matches. This trigger miss at the end just confirmed his incredible luck in that pro tour.
