Have you had problems with pedestrians not understanding what should happen when they wish to cross near junctions? I have, and while thinking about this I thought about this simple solution.

There’s definitely a particular problem with roundabouts. I personally feel it’s a lot more dangerous for everyone for traffic on the roundabout to be giving way and I imagine a lot of pedestrians also feel this way.

As a pedestrian I wouldn't have known I had right of way and in most cases I'd be most reluctant to try and cross with a car there.

I've given way just like this, and even on my approach to a 'main' road from a 'side' road, and the pedestrians have no idea what I'm doing despite me remaining stationary 10 yards away. It's not just the drivers who aren't aware, it's basically most of the population.

I'm entirely with the pedestrians in these two examples. There is no way I'm going to step out in front of cars coming off a roundabout even if the first one has stopped. I'd actually step back from the kerb to indicate to the drivers that I'm not going to cross.

As a pedestrian I tend to not like drivers stopping to let me cross unless it is absolutely clear that I have right of way. I will sometimes look the other way to discourage them from stopping because all it takes is one inattentive, aggressive or belligerent cyclist/motorcyclist filtering, or a rear ending from a larger vehicle for me to be injured. Also, as a driver it's annoying when people unnecessarily give way when it would be quicker and easier for everyone just to continue.

I have to be honest, I'm not comfortable giving way on the exit to a roundabout. I think it's a recipe for being rear-ended.

I have had the same issues several times since the code was updated, as a driver the pedestrians don’t know about the changes and as a pedestrian, more worrying, many drivers don’t know about the changes, you’re correct in saying it will take years to get right, unfortunately this confusion with lead to many collisions. In the situation you were in as you slowed to give way to the pedestrians you caused the vehicle behind to slow down, in a different situation the car behind could have collided with the slowing car and even shunted it into the pedestrians who could have began crossing.

Without this channel I don't think I would have been aware of the changes to the highway code, and I expect a lot of people aren't aware of this in general. More work should have been done to advertise this change.

I think the mothers at the roundabout did the right thing, it is much clearer example to children to only go when there are no vehicles. I know you were checking behind you but many drivers might have stopped pressuring the children into crossing as another vehicle comes past.

The rule is absurd when it comes to roundabouts. I would never in a million years attempt to cross a roundabout with cars about to exit.

Personally I don't think they should have given pedestrians right of way.

Around where I live, a lot of the roundabouts have zebra crossings on the exits. It can cause a bit more congestion on the roundabouts at peak times, like the school run. However, I think it generally makes the majority of drivers pay attention a little more and gives pedestrians the confirmation that they are meant to cross.

The lack of public knowledge on these rules are a nightmare. You can’t actually follow the new rules 95% of the time, as a pedestrian most cars don’t know and I wouldn’t even try and cross with the old rules as most drivers think they have priority. When I’m in the car I’m giving way but the pedestrians are hesitant and other drivers unaware of why you are giving way.

I had a similar reaction over the weekend where pedestrians didn’t understand why I stopped and waited for them to cross. I didn’t encourage them either to go forward as I wasn’t sure how the traffic behind me would react, not least by being frustrated and then overtaking me, potentially creating a hazard for the pedestrians.

I understand a roundabout is a 'junction' too, so theoretically the rule could apply here as well, but in the Highway Code there's separate rules for 'Road junctions' (170 to 183) and 'Roundabouts' (184 to 190) and neither of the rules about roundabouts (184 to 190) says you should give way to pedestrians when approaching or leaving a roundabout, so I don't.

I'm not sure if you've mentioned this in your videos Ashley but what are your thoughts on this rule change? (outside of commenting on what people

I think at this point it would be greatly beneficial if we had some old school public road safety and awareness videos. This is the first video I've come across addressing these rules exiting roundabouts.

For personal, physical safety, as a pedestrian I'll continue not to take any priority that is offered. Too hard to know if the driver is really giving priorty or just indecisive. I won't put my health on the line to test the situation.
@jakebrennan7685
@jakebrennan7685 2 года назад
It was a tricky situation for sure, but I think you may have broken your own rule about not causing confusion. You allowed one pedestrian to tell you when it was safe to go instead of making that assessment yourself, although you did very well by keeping an eye on all of them in case they did walk out. Maybe if you stayed still they would have got the message just a few seconds later. That's the issue I've had with the new rules also, trying to solve confusion by adding more confusion.

This happens to me on nearly a weekly basis at the moment, I'm waiting for them to cross and pedestrians are still waving me through.
