In this video I collect and begin processing the anode slimes produced by my electrolytic copper refining cell after running for 25 days and completely consuming one set of dirty copper anodes. Time to figure out how much precious metals were deposited in the slimes. Please visit www.mdpub.com/UrbanGoldMining/... for more information.

You mentioned before that you improved your process with the stockpot and so your copper will contain less precious metals. As a fan of efficiency I should like that you won't need to run your copper through a refining cell forever, but I would watch videos about it forever for sure! 😉

HA! it's Fe(NO3)3 and Cu(NO3)2 , Fe3+ and Cu2+ So if you pump 6 electrons from Anode to Kathode in the cell 2 Iron ions will dissolve and 3 Copper ions will plate out, meaning that you put 2 x 55,845 Fe = 112 mol into solution and plate out 3 x 63,546 Cu = 192 mol. This was the mechanism I hinted to with the Silver but HA! that works just the other way around because it's Ag1+. Zink is also a good explanation for Kathodes become heavier than Anodes because that will go in a 1 to 1 ion ratio and Zink is less dense than Copper. Sorry I screwed up but I was 2/3 right :D

If you are thinking about Iron might be in the Anodes then I'm pretty sure there might be Nikkel also

I’m studying industrial ecology and I wanted to understand anode slime and the recovery process. But at first, I could only find static photos online. This video is priceless to me.

Fun deal. Can't wait to see your results. I have been tasked with running some production precious metal recovery. I think I'm going to mass smelt pre-ashed electronics adding some Sulfur, flux and Iron to get all the copper and precious metals reduced into an ingot and then Electrowinn the copper out of that material and then treat the slimes with acids to get the precious metals. Rather than using acids to dissolve all the copper and removing the precious metals first and then dealing with dirty copper later.

Reactive series of metal would confirm silver will be drop from solution and not go in to solution as copper is the most represented in your experiment

True, but if he starts using filter bags they will hold other metals back and the electricity will force them in to solution. On the other hand when you get it right it makes the most awesome copper with a light metallic sheen of other colors .

Im a couple of years behind on the topic but at 28:52 you mentioned that you had bricks in your solution. One of the things that give bricks there characteristic color is iron. Your contamination may very well have been from there addition.

It's not the end. Just a good place to break up a video that was growing towards two hours long. The second half should be ready for release tomorrow.

Since this was brand new territory, you should not have been treating the whole mass with nitric first thing. Put a small amount of the slimes into a test tube and treat that with nitric acid. It will only require a drop or two of the slimes and a few drops of nitric. You can also heat and cool the test tube much more quickly than the beaker. The end result is you save both time and materials - as well as avoiding doing something that will cause problems further along in the process.

What source of copper are you working with?
@SomervilleBob

You can make irregular sheets easily by pouring the metal onto a piece of steel. The sheets don't have to be perfectly rectangular to work.

Just a guess. Maybe the NOX fumes were used up before they could leave the solution. I watched part 2 and I think a lot of copper made it through. I would have thought the same as you though and carried on. Great series Mike, as always.

Pour ingot and get one of those roller presses. You will control the thickness and width to a point

What would have happened if you had ended the elecrowinning with a carbon rod anode? I'm not certain of this but would it not have pulled continued to plate the copper ions onto the cathode. Regenerating nitric and sulphuric acids, and those acids inturn react with unreacted copper making copper salts untill the there was no more copper in the sludge?

Well ... hm ... very impressive and tricky video ... I've got an idea h2so4 50-50 with hcl to protect b.m. and nitric in portions till no reaction to dissolve any p.m. and clsn2 will anser to question . But.... h2so4 will not dissolve Ag. Au pd will disolve

@15:36 That chunky stuff that you filtered off shouldn't be treated as pure copper that has just 'fallen off' the anode. Some of that copper still can have gold attached to it, and should be re-melted into your next anode. I've seen quite a few people who don't seem to realize this.
@shanejohns7901

@26:10 What happens if you use a carbon rod (which will deteriorate the rod, and put carbon into your electrolyte solution), or more ideally a platinum mesh rod? Will that plate out the metal from the electrolyte?

You could make the bricks chemical proof by sealing them. Paint for concrete floors should work well for this. It makes them easier to clean also.

others have made tapered ingots anodes.........this supposedly prevents the copper sloughing off into the slimes. Never tried it myself.

Silver won't push copper out, but you are probably right iron and zinc.
@foobar1794

If the anode slimes have still high copper content, could you just remelt the anode slimes to a new anode? You could then run that anode again through the cell along with the next batch. This could help you to concentrate the values and at some point you would have concentrated enough values to anode slimes to justify processing with nitric acid.

I'm waiting with bated breath !! I probably would have added more nitric to be sure. 👍

If you melt your copper into shot you may have an easier time loading them into a filter while submerged

Once again, again.... Too much H2O and not enough HNO3. The Key is to get the BMs dissolved ASAP and with as little acid as possible. Really enjoying your vids!

Much too much fumbling. Decant the liquid and add HCL to the solids. Then filter and you have all the PMs plus some other non disolveable materials in your filter. From there use AR.

It cant be silver as Copper is higher on the electronegativity scale and would displace the silver.
