One more thing. I reacted to Dionysus Live and put it up on the Patreon with Love Yourself: Tear for $2 if anyone wants to watch it! www.patreon.com/BlakeMcLain
Could you make a video explaining how you got into producing, how you learned to produce, and your thought process/tips in making a song? (Any of those
RM has talked about how he prefers for their music to be consumed from start to finish, and how they don’t necessarily want to follow popular practices (eg. making shorter songs to increase the amount of streams). He prefers to make complete songs/albums that are designed to be a cohesive body of work, not just short individual pieces.
I would like to add that this is the reason why the entire bts discography should be played from start to finish. It's truly mind blowing how it's all cohesive.
I advise you that if you get to listen to the album of BTS - MAP OF THE SOUL 7, the song "Black Swan" you must also listen to it in its other version "Art film", it is completely different and you can find it here on RU-vid because in the album did not integrate that version
Yes.. Black Swan Art film version is a masterpiece.. Blake, if you want to react to it, it's only available on RU-vid, it only has Music Video, doesn't have an audio version in Spotify or iTunes.
Fun fact! That high note at 45:03 is Jin. He was asked to come to the recording studio by the producer to scream. As high as possible. And that’s the result! Hahahah And yes, Dionysus is super hyped live, it was their opening song for their tour and the closing song to a lot of award shows!
Your probably one of the only people who actually appreciated that high note in Dionysus. Your probably my favorite when it comes to analyzing the music.
Infussionzz -_- it’s probably because he’s a producer, he has trained ears, and just because others don’t always point it out don’t mean they don’t appreciate it ;)
Bangtan is life I’m not a producer (I’m 11 lol) but the first time I heard the song I heard the note and I was like “Damn, that’s really fucking high. How did they do it, which member is it, it sounds like Jin.” That was my response. I heard it straight away, it makes me Jungshook.
Min Yoongi is a DONKEY cuz why not Yes you think just because I didn’t ad in a lol or a emoji have an attitude? I was just responding! You can’t jump to conclusions based on how you think the message is read xD
Bangtan is life you don’t have to add an emoji or a ‘lol’, it was the way it was written. I won’t lie I have a bad attitude so personally I take everything that people talk to me in an attitude which is how I developed my attitude because I always thought people were talking to me with an attitude. The way you wrote your comment can be read as “Well good for you! 😁😊” or “well good for you.. 🙄” and I took it the second way. I’m sorry that I took it that way, yes it is an assumption but you can’t really tell someone’s meaning or way of what they are saying through a screen, I apologise for offended and hurting you. I didn’t mean too, that was just the way I took it. I shouldn’t have just assumed your right, I should’ve ask what way you meant it before replying. Anyway, this probably seems like a “oh that person isn’t taking any responsibility for there actions and just wants to move on with a quick apology and doesn’t care.” Thing, but I just don’t want this to turn into a huge fight which has happened before because of my assumptions and when I try to explain they don’t understand and try to ‘fight’ me. So I apologise, pleas forgive me. This never happened okay? Lest move on maturely pleas. So who is your bias? (BTS)
You’ll notice a lot of “call and response” in their songs bc there’s this thing called ‘fan chants’ in kpop where fans will sing/shout certain things/parts of the song during a live performance which makes the song much more interactive for the fans. Or at least in my opinion that’s why they do it
yeah in mikrokosmos mainly, from what we get on Namjoon's live talking about the making of the album, it was a song made for concerts, and it really played the biggest part in the end of the Speak Yourself Tour, everyone cried in my day lol
You're right; it's also similar to the style called arena/stadium rock that hit big in the US in the 70s. Songs specifically built for large audience play, structured so they could be easily extended if the musicians got into it, ample space for crowd participation, etc. He mentioned aerosmith earlier as a comparison, they're a prime example of stadium rock
If you're a fan of the 'major-minor' thing, I think you'll appreciate Jimin's solo - Lie. Really enjoyed you're breakdown of their songs, they just have so much packed in their songs its so much fun hearing new stuff even after an year.
I don't actually know, but I'd guess their song length is more designed for performing than radioplay. They don't try to keep their songs short so that they'll be easily consumed and streamed and played on the radio, but they make them as long as they want to. They are performers, and I think short songs aren't as good if you want to do an outstanding performance. Idk, just my thoughts.
Traditionally in kpop the set up is different from Western music, the songs are longer. I have heard producers talk about that they appreciate it because they don't feel limited by time and can be more creative.
BTS don't adhere too industry standards in songwriting song structure vocals instrumentation and arrangements - what I love about them is they are glaringly original and unapologetically refreshing
It's interesting how you mentioned the "key change" in Jamais Vu cause I think that part was intentional as Jamais Vu means something that should be familiar to you but suddenly feels very unfamiliar. So when I first heard that note it really caught me off guard and I got weirded out, so I guess that reflects the jamais vu.
i don't know if someone already told you this, but along with the help of other respectable producers, songwriters and composers, BTS write and produce their own music! BTS is a group of talented musicians, they put a lot of passion into learning new instruments and creating heartfelt songs. by taking part in the creative process, they bring sincerity to their music, which is why lyrics play an important role in their music. for example RM, the leader of the group and the rapper from Intro: Persona, was credited for over 160 songs as a songwriter and composer; Suga was credited for over 100 songs as a songwriter and composer; J-hope has written over 100 songs (including their solo projects). In recent years, even the other members are also actively participating in creative process. Recently V, Jungkook, Jimin and Jin produced their solo songs and achieved many milestones. I thought you might be interested in this since you're a producer 😊
Lol you’re freaking over Jin’s high note in Dionysus...you definitely need to hear his triple high note in “ crystal snow” it’s their Japanese song :) EDIT/FUN FACT : Jin was actually put in a booth and was told to scream lmao 😂
This is why I think Jamais Vu was genius. You keep thinking "is it a key change? Is it not?" And it's supposed to sound familiar, you feel like you should recognize it, but you don't. And that's exactly what "Jamais Vu" as a feeling is! It's being faced with something that SHOULD be familiar to you but you don't really recognize.
Exactly thats how awesome they produce and mix their music same with Jimin Lie I have seen musicians point out that the major key switch was as not believable and come off like a lie in itself im not surprised with how detailed they are anymore. But still amazing when they do this
I always loved jamais vu since I usually hear things others don't. It's just beautiful how they make music. I have continuously reviewed bts songs so objectively and that's why I can probably write a 10000 words essay defending their craft if not a book. It's one thing to be musically gifted and it's another to have the talent called dynamics. Alot of artists are talented but most of the time it feels as though they are in their head. That's why it's very good to collaborate with different song writers, producers and composers as it don't just create dynamics for the songs which they helped produce but also it creates dynamics in the artist's craft, taste and understanding of music as well as rhythm.
THIS is what ARMY (fandom name) wants to see, we really appreciate seeing you break down their music, because majority of us get help from their lyrics and music. That's why we stream a lot, the music is the biggest point. Thank you again for helping us develop more sense of their music and educating us. We really appreciate it, Blake.
I've ordered in a new mic to help with speaking quality, but it wont be here until the end of the month! Sorry for the weird audio quality and changes in volume everyone!
just a side note: jimin's lie has a huge key change from minor to major too just like in jamais vu. it's fascinating. also that high scream in dionysus was jin.
It's really fun for me to hear how their songs sound to unbiased and trained ears, especially without the help of lyrics. You end up picking out things that unconsciously make or break the songs for me!! It's really fun to hear you dissect BTS songs too (also really looking forward to your lyrics reaction, I wasn't aware you did that but it's such a welcome surprise, can't wait to hear your take on them). Thanks for reviewing their albums, it's really really fun to follow you along through their discography!!
100% co-signed! i love watching people using their specialities to point out and highlight certain things with more expertise and knowledge to follow. super fun and interesting! makes you appreciate the project as a whole way more, and in this case, the art of production more
@@udabaeornaw9051 definitely, kind of gives you more pride in your artists too. The fact that bts are so hands on with the production of the songs?? Not just vocally and on a lyrical, thoughtful level or on a visual media or performance level, but making musical masterpieces?? It thrills me so much haha. The fact that you can come at their stuff from all sorts of angles and professions and still come off in awe of how much work they put in every aspect is amazing!!
i think you make an interesting point of why their songs are often much longer than a lot of other artists. i think for one, there are seven of them, so a lot more time is needed to properly showcase all of them in one song. and I also feel like they don't write their music for loopability (is that a word? lol) which a lot of artists do nowadays due to the demand for fast entertainment through streaming etc. bts have always focused on their art rather than what makes the most sales or will garner the most streams. i've never thought about that before but I'm glad you pointed that out.
@@Tharushi_Anthony it's an average but it's still alot ppl when compared to western artists (most are soloists or groups of 3-4) the average song is 3 mins long, 7 ppl in 3 mins is alot
their title tracks are tho (“loopable” like you said lol). i mean they don’t get radioplay in the west bc xenophobia (a shame really) but you can bet their songs would be playing non-stop in South Korea like a pop song would get played in the US. they do experiment more w their b-sides tho (: as for the duration of the songs it’s probably bc they want every member to get a bit of spotlight and they do have different sections for the raps and vocals, so that’s probably it.
I was waiting for him to get to Dionysus and I was not disappointed! His reaction to Jin's high note absolutely SENT ME😂 Their producer actually just kept Jin after the recording session and told him to just scream into the mic with all his gut and we got this iconic scream in Dionysus😂 I'm honestly always amazed by Jin. And Yes Dionysus is the best hype song in Live. They started their concerts with it and ended their award show performances with it🔥🔥🔥🤘🏻
man i wish you did mots:7 instead....i really want to see your reaction to black swan, shadow and louder than bomb. the production behind these 3 songs is just phenomenal
he's probably going to do it, it's probably on his list already since so many people have requested since his reaction of ly: tear. We just have to wait ^^
I like how the story behind Jin's high note in Dionysus is like, he finished recording, and the producer just asked him to scream xD Just scream. And he was like, "...Okay!" xD
Your smile when you hear a part that you find really cool or interesting is everything to me. It shows that a quick spark in your brain kind of like when a dog goes "SQUIRREL" if that makes sense.
The best thing about Dionysus being a hype song, is that for the speak yourself tour it was the opening song. Not even kidding there were flames, panthers and the choreo is awesome as well 😍
THE NEW BTS SINGLE IS COMING, A FUN SUMMER TRACK IN ENGLISH! OUT AUG 21ST! Let's go people, break the records! Presave the track on Spotify and be ready 😄
The person who is doing the high note in Dionysus is the same one doing the low notes just before the chorus, that's how big his vocal range is. Btw you should see a performance of Dionysus because this is one of their best performance ever and one of the best performances to ever exist in general. They be doing very dangerous and acrobatic stuffs like falling on the floor and jumping and rolling on badass ancient greek moving tables and chairs in an ancient greek set and outfits. Like i knew those guys were strong and all but this is next level, everyone would hurt himself doing those things. And THE FACT THAT THEY DO IT WITH STABLE LIVE VOCALS TOO is inhuman. All BTS members have 3 lungs because there's no way. They are the best performers in this generation, I can't name ONE artist that can be compared to their performance quality except maybe Michael Jackson or Beyonce. Best performers group in history.
I think one of the reasons to why their songs are longer is bc they usually have to add three rap verses (since there are three rappers) while also add verses for the vocal line since they don't only sing the choruses. I feel like that's also a reason why groups who have even more members usually have more of an unfair line distribution/give very short parts to certain members.
You know what I love in BTS? the versatility in their music. Try to compare Boy with Luv with Dionysus. sooo far different. From being cute and sassy to fierce and swaggy.
heyy i would love to see ur reaction to map of the soul: 7. All the members have solo songs on there :) u could just skip the first.. 5? i think it was? songs bc theyre songs also present on mots: persona. ALSO would b nice if u could react to some live stuff maybe ;D yh, would be cool! EDIT: ALSO IF U DO PLS SKIP ON FT SIA ITS............... UMM...... YEA......
Funny you mention how Dionysus is really hype live because this song was actually the opening song for their Love Yourself: Speak Yourself tour concerts! On top of the song itself already being hype asl, BTS pour in so much energy into the opening performance, it did an amazing job of setting the tone for their concerts
"Not cookie-cutter pop." Absolutely! This is what drew me to them (after their dancing). Which other artist has such variety and diversity in their music? And on one album, let alone their whole discography!
45:04 Gosh , Glad u Got that Jin's High Note, i mean ofcourse i can feel you're such a great producer, u really have so much knowledge about music ... Love ur reactions !
.. finally a music producer reacts to indepth musical technicality and arrangement .. this is what kpop has been missing since the downfall of mrjkpop ..
i'd love to hear you talk about an older album, like Wings or even The Most Beautiful Moment in Life EPs. there's a lot of talk in the fandom about how their production has changed since they blew up and it'd be cool to hear what you'd pick out from them :)
@@sarahshaban906 he was happy to hear about a collab with halsey so im assuming he'll be happy to hear a collab with sia, but once he hears it he's gonna not like it
Please react to their recent album "Map of the Soul: 7" this album is very different in different aspects that you hopefully also probably find very interesting and fresh
Id like to point out a thing that is really cool and interesting about BTS is that lately they have been travelling back and revisiting their old works. In this case, Map of the Soul PERSONA is a revisit to their third full album in 2014, Skool Luv Affair. There are parallels between the title tracks, Boy with Luv and their earlier track, Boy in Luv. Its kind of trend in BTS’ music to tell a tale of growth and development to mirror their aging as a group and the collective aging of their fans. Their message since then has shifted from issues in the schooling curriculum (the album O!RUL82? ) to puberty, angst and hormonal conflicts (hence, Skool Luv Affair’s boy in luv) to a discovery of youth (the most beautiful moment of life pt. 1 and 2) to a series of trials unfolding the concept of love to others and oneself (love yourself series: her, tear, answer) to then, the journey of uncovering the map of the soul and the human psyche’s complexes, which flows from the an epiphany to start loving oneself (hence Boy with Luv). Boy with Luv can take many intepretations, along with its alternative title of ‘a poem for small/trivial things’ as it can be taken as the acceptance of loving oneself or a love song for ARMY which BTS themselves have specified. What im also trying to get at is that BTS have sampled their old music as well looking at the old-school vibe of the instrumental and vocal sample in intro:persona, is actually from the come ack trailer (teaser) for their Skool Luv Affair album. BTS’ artistry and music is super calculated and in depth so im definitely not doing it justice with paragraph. Just wanted to share a bit of information on the creation of this album and BTS’ discography.
BTS albums I recommend: Map of the Soul: 7 You Never Walk Alone Love Yourself: Answer Love Yourself: Her The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever
the author of the book this album is based on (Jung's map of the soul) did a podcast and analysed the psychological concepts BTS use in the lyrics if you wanna check that out -- episode-42-jungs-map-of-the-soul or this one dr-murray-steins-comments-about-bts-map-of-the-soul-persona-are-so-insightful-16983771

I really hope you’ll react to Map of the soul: 7 (you can skip first tracks since they’re already in mots persona), some of their old albums like Dark&Wild as well as the rappers’ mixtapes (which are mainly all written and produced by themselves)!! The rappers all have 2 mixtapes each except for jhope that has only 1 as of now and soon we’ll be getting the vocalists’ mixtapes too!! Here’s the names: J-Hope: - Hope World (2018) RM: - RM (2015) - mono (2018; he says he calls it a playlist rather than a mixtape ☺️) Agust D (aka SUGA) - Agust D (2016) - D-2 (2020)
I've been listening to the comments about call and response, building tension, etc. I never really knew how to explain any of it except to say that their style in pretty much every song makes me feel like we are having a conversation. Like we are sitting down together and having this rich, satisfying, reflective, DEEP conversation. Even with songs that are more geared to be upbeat and energetic in a different way, you feel like your hanging out with your friends, just jamming, singing and dancing. I don't speak or understand Korean but they have discovered a way musically to still reach you and draw you into the conversation. I just "discovered" these guys about 8 months ago and I am totally taken with their music! So, it's great to have someone explain in a more technical way what I've actually been hearing. It's no wonder I am hooked (and they use loads of those)!
also jin did the high notes at the end of dionysus and he told us that the producer asked him if he can scream at the end of the song :D thats probably why it sounds so powerful
Now think about how their tour shows STARTED with Dionysus! It's an effective way to kick off a concert lol Id love to see you check out the last of the 'Love Yourself' series album 'Love Yourself Answer' It has some repeats from Love Yourself Tear but it has sooo many awesome tracks and a lot of interesting solos. But now that I think about it..you should check out the one that started of the series first 'Love Yourself Her'. Anyways, love these videos. Ill be back to check out the next one!
One thing about BTS is that they don’t play by the rules put forward by the industry with playlisting and bundle and they are always experimentative with their music too. Organic and authentic that’s why when you finally understand BTS there’s no way not to like and admire them.
Great reaction, I love how you methodically dissect BTS' music, your reaction on Jimin's voice in Boy With Love, Make it Right and Home is true, his voice seems to always sit on top of the mix, makes it sound so prominent. Love his vocal color too, Home is my fave in this album. Thanks for your reaction to Jin's high notes too, the live version is so mind blowing, a full sensory package.
A suggestion for future album reviews - you could do a segment where you answer questions like these: 1 Which song excited you the most from a production standpoint? 2 Which song(s) are a personal favourite of yours? 3 Which song(s) excited you vocally or from the rap? etc (+ Bonus) since BTS are known for their amazing live performances, which song are you most excited to watch live? (they are also known to always sing live and with no autotune so some songs that use autotune sound different live)
ADORA is basically the unofficial 8th member of BTS. She’s one of their producers and often does background vocals for them. Anything that sounds high or female that isn’t Jimin in the stacked vocals is her. The “Woohoo” in Home is her.
Not always, I mean MOTS:7 used the gospel choir members for a couple of tracks, then there was the whole thing where people kept saying ADORA did Sweet Night even though she didn't. She's amazing and mostly on the group tracks, the female background is her, but saying that anything that sounds high or female that isn't Jimin is her is wrong.
The almost famale vocal tone is Park Jimin of bts if am not mistaken you always recognizing the most his vocal, espicially in the Make it Right song...
@@cosmixtsu i would say he has a higher vocal tone than most, but it most definitely does not fall directly into the feminine binary, it's really quite dynamic and rather toes the line.
It's really curious how his singing voice is so different from his speaking voice. I'm guessing it's because he tends to stay in his head voice and falsetto, but it's still quite a contrast, especially with his satoori, which lowers his voice even more.
Dionysus it's THE song and their performance it's amazing. You should check it out!!! Loved how you explained each song! I'll wait for another bts video
Jhope really did his best composing Dionysus. He talked about the struggle and frustration when making that song but its worth so much. He also contributed on composing Jamais Vu along with RM and other Bighit producers. Glad to see your reaction to those two songs since those two are my faves from this album.
JHope is so much underrated but now people are now discovering him as a creative genius in his song "More" and soon more songs from him from Jack in the Box album
Thx for giving them a listen, and sharing your unique insight. You really need to watch their Dionysus live (MMA show 2019) where they also won every Grand Award that year. And I look forward to you looking into their lyrics which are so poetic and meaningful. 💜💜
Please pay attention to lyrics and also take into consideration sometimes lyrics don’t match 100% because they can loose a little bit of meaning through the translation 😌 Armys from korea often say that translations don’t do justice to the wordplay and meaning I love your reactions to full albums, is good to be educated ☺️💜 Please react to map of the soul: 7 (some of this songs are in the album as well so you can skip them) Pd: for intro persona namjoon used a beat from their song intro: skool luv affair(2014) , he completely changed the flow but in the same beat (idk much about musical terms so idk if the track is the same) This series (map of the soul) is based on carl jung’s theory of the psyche so maybe you may need explanation to persona lyrics Dionysus is about getting drunk on art, with the lyrics in makes more sense but yeah... the way I had to read psychology and greek theories for this album 😂 Wait... i just got to the part you said sounds like latino music. HOSEOK LATINO KING i’ve always known 🥺 (he participated a lot in the making of dionysus). During the love yourself tour this song was the opening and the choreo 🔥
Map of the Soul: 7, Love Yourself: Answer, and Wings are all really good albums. They all have solos from each members and have quite a few song with either the whole group or one of the lines (rappers and vocalist). Map of the Soul: 7 has some songs from Map of the Soul: Persona in it at the beginning of the album as a fyi (Love Yourself: Answer is the same with Love Yourself: Tear). Maybe you could react to one of the rappers mixtapes? J-hope has Hope World, RM has RM and Mono (I don't think you can find the RM mixtape on spotify if that is what you use), and Suga (or his solo alias August D) has August D and D-2.
I really want to hear Blake saying something like "there's huuuuuuge, huuuge contrast between the production and where their voices are sitting" about Louder than Bombs. Thanks for your videos!
I feel like you would really enjoy reacting to their Wings album. This is the first album were all of the members had a solo song, so you’ll also get a chance to really hear their individual styles Also: the high note at the end that you really liked was done by Kim Seokjin. He said they asked him to yell into the mic and he was surprised they added it to the album 😂 It’ll be really cool if you reacted to their live performance of Dionsys, because the song hits you that much harder when you see the choreo for it. Either way, I really enjoy your content, thank you.
I would adore seeing you react to a live performance. Their performances are so multifaceted that its kind of insane. If you want to watch what is considered by many to be their best live performance check out the 2019 MMA (not MAMA which is good but not quite as grandiose and is split into two parts). It's from an award show ,which gets really hard to remember part way through with how crazy it is, and is 40 minutes long but its so entertaining it goes by so quickly. You've heard all the songs they perform except for one (an old song from 2014 called Boy in Luv) and a few songs that have remixed snippets included in the performance. They close the show with Dionysus so you'd get to see just how right you are about how hype that performance can get. The 2018 MMA performance is also one I'd highly recommend and you've heard most of the songs for that one as well, just having not heard the closing song Idol which is on the album Love Yourself: Answer
if you like BTS I'd highly recommend you check out TXT too! They're from the same company and sometimes have the same producers working on their stuff, but since they're younger their music has a bit more of a playful and experimental feeling to it! Their album concepts are inspired by magic, harry potter, etc so it almost has this whimsical quality to it :) Personally, I'm a huuuge fan of that!
Funny how when ever a moa mention txt on/in something which is related to bts But army does that we get hate Istg we armys will never get the same love and respect we give to others
