37:17 Boom. That right there is what Scorsese was talking about that he got so much heat for. You got to give these smaller films a chance to be screened in more rooms at theaters. I go to the theaters to see the smaller films in 1 or 2 rooms and I'll see these Disney superhero films taking up to 70% of the theater. It even happened to Tarantino when he wanted to screen Hateful Eight in a big prolific theater, I can't remember the name (I think it was the Chinese Theater), but Disney put an ultimatum on them and said "If you show Hateful Eight we won't screen The Force Awakens"...Tarantino was forced to pull Hateful Eight from that theater. That heat that Scorsese took on is the evidence that audiences nowadays will go to a theater only to see the big superhero films and if you say one opinion about them, they will crucify you for it and that's sad, really.

Jib M - as if theaters doesn’t want to screen Disney/TFA more than other films. TFA is the biggest domestic movie, there was a demand for it. Any business would go for it than other movie that wasn’t selling as much. I’m sure they would do the same even if Disney did not asked them to. Yes, there are a lot of small films that are really good but if the money are on the blockbusters the theaters would screen them more. Domestic gross are dwindling if not for these blockbusters a lot of theaters would’ve close by now. With how expensive it is now to go to movies many people would rather wait to watch these smaller films in streaming and only go for those blockbusters or event movies, that’s just the truth. I’m not defending Disney here, I’m just merely saying the obvious. Businesses like theaters would always go where the money is.

Studios green light movies and let the box office do what it does. Independent Producers need to know that their picture can be distributed, know there will be a return, know that their movie will be seen. If you remove the possibility of screening in a main theatre, the Indie is doomed.

Carmichael K. Okay say we go with your statement “The Irishman was made a decade too late”, that still doesn’t take away from the beautiful direction by Scorsese, the class A acting by Pesci, Pacino, Graham (just to name a few), the dynamite screenplay by Zaillian who’s dialogue is so witty it becomes Tarantino like at some points and the amazing production design. The whole picture plays like an elegy. People have mixed opinions about the CGI and cool it’s your opinion. You can also say it’s not Goodfellas or Casino but it’s not supposed to be. It’s a politics and gangster milleur. It’s not supposed to be flashy or fast. It’s more somber and poignant. As far as the Joker, most people think it’s brilliant and the whole movie is not supposed to be a typical superhero movie. Todd Phillips didn’t want to make superhero fluff. At the end of the day you’re entitled to your opinion.

I like that other producers really respect Charlize, seeing her as a real producer. And she actually produced projects without she in it as well (maybe small cameo, could be a waste since she is a terrific actress and human being so why not, right?). Her sharing is insightful and informative. She done well both as an actress and producer. I salute her!

The way I see it, on one hand you have the artists (directors, writers, actors, DPs, etc.) who should and do try to create a piece of art, and on the other hand you have the people who put in the money (studios, etc) whose main concern is the profitability. Producers fall somewhere in the middle, trying to keep a delicate balance, managing a million little things. Much in the way that the saying for actors ("there are no small parts") goes, when it comes to making a movie, every aspect and every person in the production play their important role.

@ayorkshirerosetravels
@ayorkshirerosetravels 4 года назад
Małgorzata Dziekońska there’s no one way on how a story is developed. You could be a writer who writes a script and then teams up with a producer to get it made. You could be a producer/writer who then brings a director on board or you could be a director/writer who teams up with a producer to develop it. David Hayman for example as a producer read the Harry Potter book before it came a global hit and then developed it into the film series.

To the Tolkien producer, how about you make a good movie before heading it against Disney.
@Darfaultner
@Darfaultner 4 года назад
6.8 on IMDB doesn't mark it as trash. He said the problem was that people don't go to the cinema for small movies anymore, only blockbusters, which is obviously true. People go to the cinema for a ride. Is your problem the subject matter, or you just didn't like the movie?
@OlafLesniak
@OlafLesniak 4 года назад
@@Darfaultner He does have a point I just don't like he's calling out Marvel and other Disney movies a cheap buck. Some of them are but most come because of the reputation Disney has built over the years, that reputation is the quality of their movies. Even something as okayish as Aladdin live-action can dominate the box-office and that's because the classic is so refined. Tolkien is not a proven series so the film had to have been better if it intended to do more financially.
@Darfaultner
@Darfaultner 4 года назад
@@OlafLesniak The need Disney and the other big studios have for their projects to be part of a franchise is what has killed the originality of big-budget movies. Studios will only spend the big bucks on a story that already has an audience, which means that the most original scripts just won't get made if they need a big budget, which is THE problem in Hollywood right now. Maybe Tolkien has nothing to do with this, but I thought I'd mention it. I think it's a real frustration for all writers, producers, directors, actors and film lovers everywhere. I do like Marvel movies, they are genuinely good movies, but I'd much sooner see something with an original concept and story with a budget that big any day. Do we always have to watch men with superpowers fighting each other? I'd love a surprise like the way the Matrix or the original Star Wars or Alien surprised us. Those films are less likely to get made these days, simply because they weren't a known brand at the time.
