Before masters at the Bosphorus factory start hammering, every cymbal looks more or less the same differing only by weight and bell sizes. The initial steps of the Bosphorus cymbal production consists of melting metal in wood-coal fired pits to achieve the B20 Bosphorus alloy for casting. Then the process is followed by rolling and baking the cast in a wood-burning oven several times to make cymbal blanks. Next theses are placed in a water bath to achieve durability and resistance followed by stamping the bell and cutting the edges in circle. This uncut video shows how hand hammering shapes the profile and lathing that makes the series, here a Master 17" Crash in its final steps of the production. The time and effort to make a ride is around twice as much.

Ronald West Zildjian cymbals have less hands on craftsmanship than any of the Turkish brands. No hand hammering. You can’t fault Zildjian since OSHA would never allow hand hammering. Sabian hand hammers and Paiste does also. With that said Zildjian and Sabian make the best Turkish style cymbals outside Turkey. So what statement exactly are you offended by?

Not too long ago I switched to Bosphorus cymbals for playing Jazz. I think they make the perfect cymbals for Jazz, because of the way they're created. Every dent on the cymbal is made by hand. This makes a cymbal difficult, but yet amazing to play on, because the tone will turn out different by moving your stick even an inch further. Really warm and natural sounding cymals, love them!

@@anthonysaponaro6318 That will only help you so far. Try playing a 20" Paiste 2000 ride (for example) in a bigband or for jazz, just sounds terrible. Thick cymbals sound loud, harsh, agressive and way too bulky, rather use those for rock and what not. Thinner cymbals, like these in the video, sound soft, warm, transparent, forgiving and are also crashable, which automatically expands your palet in jazz playing

Since then, I've tried many brands, thicknesses and weights and slowly switched from rock to pop to big band and finally, small venues with mostly acoustic instruments. My favorite cymbals in any brand are thinner and lighter with lower profile bells which give me the dark and warm tones that I want. I play Sabian, but I love and respect all cymbal makers and craftsman. Its amazing to see how the smaller companies produce their products and how minimalistic the entire operation that the company is dependent on is. I mean they used a hand pressed stamp and a hand screen print, which is pretty awesome actually because it makes me want to make one just to refinish and re-logo cymbals lol No major printers or assembly line presses, thats actually awesome. I have never played Bosphorus but this is a good testament to their quality and dedication, which always shows in the end product. So many hands required to make one instrument, one instrument people HIGHLY underrate in its creation. This is why being a drummer is not only the most expensive instrument, but the most respected instrument among its players. From the drum kit to cymbals, the amount of hand made factors from these companies is insane, especially in 2018. Somethings a machine process just cant do. It can imitate, but its not the same.
@ryanb1874
@ryanb1874 4 года назад
Well I think the companies with machines could make many more, and control the sound, nearly identicaly, but then, you might have to make 1000000 vs 10000 or so, not even sure what the total cymbals profusion number is, how high is it, if you make too many, than everyone in the world would need to be a cymbals hunger drummer, and, then, the distincness would disapeer, as soon as enough people had any every kind of cymbal

Well, It’s been a minute or two since these comments were made soooooo….. I don’t know if you’re still online ( as it were)…. Just wanted to say…… after watching this awesome video ,…. You had the most beautiful and well addressed comments of them ALL!!! Concise-Knowledgeable-Humorous-Empathetic….. I had zero idea of the manufacturing intricacies involved!!! And I thought I was an audiophile?….lol. As a jazz composer, singer songwriter …..I’m a little embarrassed at my blatant naivety… lol As a primarily ballad driven writer… unique “ cymbal transitions”, really do much to set mood as you already know…. Anyway, want to purchase a decent drum kit wit all the trimmings… In the spring of 2024…..hopefully,….all imaginable cymbal sizes as they surely won’t gather dust…..lol. Since this will be my first owned rig …. thinking about hiring someone here in the Chicago area to teach me how to properly adjust the skins and mic placements here in my already too small 250 sq ft. home studio…. lol Same thing for the standup double bass I need to buy as well……anyway….. I’m not gonna be in a hurry about it…. Little by little… lol Of course, I’d get “session guys “ for the debut album…… but…. I think the gift of self teaching is still inside of me in the meantime….Lol Hope you made it safe through the pandemic and much inspired by your newest projects? Stay focused and hungry. Musicians are the universe gift to the world. As long as the inspiration and heart is there…. the musical pieces will always find a LISTENING audience…..again… as you already know. Found “ Wolfgang Haffner” during the pandemic! He’s a masterful drummer of over 50 years …. out of Germany!….. His 2023 release : “ SILENT WORLD “ has been on repeat for me lately. I SHALL DEDICATE THE SONG “SILENT WORLD” to @ FantasticDrummer because the drumming in it is STEADY,SURE, and EFFECTIVE….. as; based on the essence of all your comments have confirmed! Sooo……………… Never give up…. Never Surrender.🕯 Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 🎼RAIN RAIN🎼

Tune, they may need to hear the hammer strikes to measure how hard they are hitting. Every time I see cymbals being hammered, it is a metal hammer on a metal base, no protection or padding. No soft or absorbent surface, just a ring of the metal.
@doubledog5894
@doubledog5894 5 лет назад
My apology for this naive question: I know hammering by hand adds to the quality but why and how? My guess is that this process increases the density of the metal at each tiny hammer mark and scatters the sound as all those marks combine, but that’s just a guess. Very interesting process though. I have a lot of respect for these craftsman. The process must be absolutely exhausting.
@markwlewisonutube
@markwlewisonutube 3 года назад
The hammering changes the specific density of an area (the hammer strike) and the pattern, size and number of hammer strikes create the specific sound pattern. I think, from observation, that the hammering adds complexity. Also, hammered cymbals seem darker and dryer than unhammered cymbals, compared one to one, I think. I noticed that lathed and unhammered cymbals seem brighter, more direct and seem to sustain longer at a higher volume. Again, my assumption is that if the metal is unhammered, the cymbal is more of a unit and hammering adds different tones and complexity.

Awesome video. The moment they put the logo on thou... never understood why they put these horrible ugly logos on top of these beautiful objects. It´s like stuck in the 90s where people liked to wear clothing with huge logos on etc... But the embossing is classy ... should leave it like that. I guess the concept of minimalism in design / understatement has not arrived in this branch. And it seams like they do not even understand why turkish handmade cymbals are so popular again... I mean I understand that they want to make a name for themselves so people will recognize the brand but to me I feel people especially like the "handmade" "small company" "craftmans-ship" aspect of it. Something big companies try to emulate and it is just doesnt work because it is not authentic. So these small companies could actually make profit from it but they decide to choose these generic names for their brands and put them at the center of the attention instead of focusing on the people that make the stuff... argh marketing issues!

Looks like a sweatshop. No earmuffs. Crappy old wobbly lathe. Guy leaning on it with no safety glasses, and metal swarf flying around. Yikes. Nice touch giving a couple of them new t-shirts for the video though.

Where is this, in Turkey? I buy Sabians, since I'm Canadian and I support Canadian companies. Good video, but these guys need to be wearing eye and hearing protection. They'll be deaf in no time.

They are wearing in ear protection lol. The guy walking around for half the video is blatantly wearing them. Attention to detail much. Also, you dont really need eye protection for this. The velocity of lathing and the process here honestly doesn’t require it. Its up to the cymbal smith anyways. Sabians artisans dont all wear eye protection.
