I love this song that Phil is recording! Also I love that they picked the Blue Mic instead of the Telefunken! Both mics sounded great, but +1 for budget friendly gear and pro results!

Very interesting. The difference between the 47 and the Blue is huge. The 47 didn’t seem to have any low mids which really didn’t do the singer any favors. I found it interesting to have placed the vocalist so close to the drums as they can create sympathetic overtones sometimes. The Lewitt sounded great on her vocal:)

Thank YOU for making such cool videos! If you don't mind, I do have a question concerning vocal production. When mixing, I test my music on both monitors and headphones. I wanted to ask, why is it that a mono lead vocal is louder through monitors than in headphones, and how can I fix this so that the levels remain the same through both? If you could answer this question for me, I would be beyond grateful! Thanks again!

+Paper Messages that sounds a lot like your speakers and headphones are not very good in a comparison test. I’m my headphones the only differences I hear are in the high end details, the vocal level remains the same. What headphones and Monitors do you use? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
@happybee9194
@happybee9194 6 лет назад
Currently, I have been mixing my music on a small mono Philips speaker, taking the advice of someone who told me that doing so would help me correct my levels. It's worked quite well so far, except in terms of the vocal volume. The headphones I use are AKG headphones, K2410 is written on the sides...I don't know if that's the version or something. I also test my music on XD3 Cerwin-Vega! monitors on the side, which happen to hold a whole lot of low end... It's just been near to impossible for me to get a good balance on all three. I'm a bit mystified, and somewhat discouraged, wondering how the professionals manage to make recordings sound good on literally all platforms and speakers.

Great video! I know he said he rarely uses WavesTune, but I noticed he has the correction ratio on 100% the entire time - that's the default after scanning. I always highlight everything and tighten up 50-70% tuning to keep it sounding natural. If you correct to 100% pitch center, it's going to sound sort of unnatural no matter what the note transition and speed is.

Personally, I loved how the Telefunken AK47 way more than the second mic on that guys vocal ESPECIALLY for that song. To me, the second mic had a yucky boost in the 2-5k area I think but the AK47 sounded very pro. Blue Kiwi sounded great on the female vocal but needed a bit of compression. I'm not a fan of the first two. Second one she just didn't move around as much. So it sounded like the mic handled the spiked better. I'd have picked the third (blue kiwi) just cuz I like that it showed a lot more of her vocal character.

Vocal tuning is much faster in Cakewalk SONAR (my favorite DAW) because it can use ARA (Audio Random Access) with Melodyne. No problems with syncing and Melodyne instances can be added to any number of audio clips. Watching how tuning is done in PT with Waves plug-in is like time travelling 5 years back in time..:)

Hi Panu Pentikäinen indeed! As Phil was saying he doesn't use WavesTune, he was just using it because it's what they had and gave a result he was happy with. I gotta say, the AK47 sounded like there was something wrong with it. I had a cheap Apex 460 C-12 style mic and it sounded like that on a male voice. But it was a $250 mic. The Blue mics seem to rule this video. I really think the Kiwi really gets the presence of her voice the best in the second segment. Thanks for the video, Warren. It's given me some ideas for an upcoming session. Thinking about the mix WHILE recording is essential, as I have learned. Thinking ahead!

It's so cool to go through the comping process with Bob and think...yep...yep.... that's EXACTLY the phrase and word I would have comped together TOO BOB! People can say what they want about how "beauty is in the eye (ear) of the beholder" with music, art and all, but this just reinforces my belief that MOST PEOPLE agree on what the ideal is with music, beauty, and art. What is better...best etc. Gotta love comping. Problem is that SOMETIMES the performance can lose it's continuity of mood and expression. I've destroyed the soul of a vocal before by doing it and that sucks! KIIIINDA like how that word at the end...yoo-ooo--OOOooo @ 49:20 leaves you feeling awkward as it ended. It still worked though. This is was awesome.

At 19:17 they chose the Lewitt over the Blue Bottle which was kind of a shock to me. I thought the Bottle smoked the other two mics hands down in terms of presence, detail, dynamics and warmth. The Lewett just sounded like mud. It was veiled and had no air. The Kiwi was awful and when she sang up high it was harsh and scratchy as shit. Why the hell is he asking the opinions of everybody in the room? Especially the singer! She's a goddamn kid without a clue. He is the producer, isn't he? I expect he should act like one!
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Horowizard, just goes to show how everyone hears everything so differently! Other peoples comments didn't like the Blue Bottle at all, I know the Lewitt and I find it has a very detailed top end and not quite the same low end and low mids as my Neumann U47 or 48. So it proves that we all hear things differently!

I wish tape was still with us, and DAW’s.... never came to fruition. This amount of,”piddling”.... is truly nauseating.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Klauth Yksyn indeed! So many things were different then! I remember in the 80's and early 90's how many days were spent editing tape! A drum track could take a day to work on! The stories of Rock and Disco drum editing adding leader tape etc is insane! The Mutt Lang records would take so many months because of all the tape editing they had to do! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
@Tony-kc5fi
@Tony-kc5fi 6 лет назад
Is he not refering to spending way to much time deciding which take/word sounds best...! Things that I'm sure you would let slide if you were working on tape....
@horowizard
@horowizard 6 лет назад
@Klauth Yksyn The medium is irrelevant. If they were cutting to Tape they still would audition different mics. In fact, more so when committing to Tape because you wouldn't have any of these Mic Modelers they have now. What is truly nauseating is the producer asking the opinions of everybody in the room. I realize some production styles are more hands-off than others but does he really have to consult the singer before he makes a decision?
@Tony-kc5fi
@Tony-kc5fi 6 лет назад
I think the medium is relevant to what he's referring to.. as I'm interpreting it anyway..recording to tape wouldn't give you the option of endless takes which you can then listen to over and over, easily comping the exact phrases you prefer. Quickly listening through 4 versions of one word then ,picking one, cos you like the 'ssshh' better at the start... technology has given us endless possibilities and choices....all of which can lead to a nauseating amount of piddling...
@horowizard
@horowizard 6 лет назад
@Tony f There was a time when Recording budgets were huge and weeks were spent getting a Snare Drum sound. I think Jeff Baxter once said it took a week just to find a comfortable chair. I suppose if you were recording live to Stereo you would still make test recordings to determine which Mic placements worked best before you began to record in earnest. With Multitrack tape you still did Mic comparisons, pick and choose and do Vocal Composites. I think the 'piddling' was all that BS that took place in the control room such as asking the singer's boyfriend what he thought. I just don't understand why the camera is on the Pro Tools Edit Window showing pretty pictures when you're supposed to be listening. You certainly never had that with tape and recording the Music wasn't a visual thing.
