We hear vocal mixing techniques from 3 World Class Engineers: Cameron Webb, Bob Horn, and Bob Marlette.
Pro Mix Academy is a collection of some of the best Producers, Engineers and Mixers in the World who have gotten together to give us an amazing look inside the Mixing, Production, Recording and Mastering process.
1. Cameron Webb explains how he uses high passing to remove unwanted low end in Lemmy’s Vocal and serial compression to give Lemmy’s vocal a very even sound in a dense Motorhead’s “Electricity.”
Check out Mixing Motörhead with Cameron Webb to get the multitracks and mix the song for yourself!
bit.ly/2INkMxL
2. Bob Horn demonstrates how a fast release time on your compressor brings your vocal up front. He uses DeEssing to control the Esses and Tees then uses a Multiband Compressor to control High Mid aggression, followed by EQ Boost and additional cutting of unwanted high mids.
Check out Anatomy of a Mix with Bob Horn & Warren Huart to get the multitracks and mix the song for yourself!
bit.ly/2HmTij3
3. Bob Marlette shows us how he uses effects like the Kramer Tape Delay to give his vocals added interest, then adds high end EQ going into compression. Next he uses reverb swells to create drama as the song transitions from the Verse to the chorus. Even though this is a Rock song the Chorus vocal, like a Pop song is triple tracked to get the Vocal wide over HUGE electric guitars!
Check out Mixing Modern Rock with Bob Marlette to get the multitracks and mix the song for yourself!

Hi Friend, throughout my career from being an Artist, Producer, Engineer, Mixer, Songwriter and A&R and wearing an enormous amount of hats (most importantly Husband and Father!), I have met many incredible people! Bob Marlette (Black Sabbath, Seether, Airbourne), Cameron Webb (Motörhead, NOFX, Pennywise) and, Bob Horn (Lupe Fiasco, Kelly Clarkson, Ne-Yo) are just three of them! They also happen to be mentors inside of Pro Mix Academy! In today's video we feature vocal mixing techniques of these 3 World Class Engineers! Wow! and more wows! It's just getting better and better. I simply love it. I work with singers a lot and, eventually, I've gotta mix "em, you know... lol! Seriously, this is really the heart of it: shaping the sound (of the vocal, in that case) in order to give the song a signature... What's more challenging..? And fun! I vote for more of that stuff.. Listen to Lemmy's voice soloed naked, undoubled, with no backing track. He was sounding really old and feeble at that point. Not nearly as noticeable when we hear the doubled vocal with the head-smashing guitar, bass, and drums back on in the mix. Sucks getting old. Sucks worse dying. R.I.P. Lemmy.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Adam Fox yes, he was getting old, this was his last album before he died. However, as you pointed out, in the track it sounds great!

I figured that was his last hoorah. I knew he had been sick, but I was still surprised when he passed. He always seemed like one of those guys that even nature couldn't kill; the kind of guy that survives the apocalypse along with Keef Richards, Ozzy, and Courtney Love.

Q: Is all this processing needed because: A: to 'fix/repair/compensate' specific issues/problems w this particular singer/song/mix? or B: because these are 'industry standard techniques' on how to get a certain mix/production?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Andybaby marvellous question! When you have an enormous amount of dense tracks, like a Motörhead song for instance, then you want that kind of compression and EQ to have it cut through heavy guitars and distorted bass!
@Andybaby
@Andybaby 6 лет назад
So it's B? ie These are 'genre specific' rather than 'track specific' techniques? (am I making sense?)
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Andybaby definitely track specific! Obviously a little genre specific in as much as a Classical or Jazz singer singing over very open sounding limited orchestration would be treated differently obviously than someone singing over an EDM track! It’s horses for courses! What’s the best solution for the song! Each guy here has a different approach for instance

@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Paul Lee Marvellous question! It would have to be a very irregular vibrato that caused that issue, if it was that far out I would choose a different take!
