I am so thankful for ‪@Gesswein1914‬ for their ongoing support. And this is just surreal... They shipped their bench setters microscope to me to test! I have been having difficulties with seeing while setting so this has come at the perfect time. And although I still need to practice a bit on how to use it, I can already tell this is really going to give my stone setting game a boost. Fun times ahead!
HIGHLIGHTED TOOLS:
Of course this is the microscope itself. I have been given the bench setters microscope but there are multiple options depending on your specific needs. i'm so happy for you!! doing things under a microscope makes a world of a difference and opens up so many possibilities - i've even started filing and sawing certain tiny elements under the microscope. i also heard that those binocular glasses things really ruin your eyesight over time. microscopes are very expensive most of the time, and i know that many people would like them or need them but don't get them just for that reason, but it's really worth checking online auctions where they sell lab equipment second hand when they upgrade to newer microscopes, as you can find real bargains.
@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials Год назад
That is a great tip Alisa, I hope other subscribers will read it as well. Second hand tools can be just as good. Compared to a lot of other microscopes this one has a very reasonable price but it still is a huge investment.

yes, the microscope is a great idea, esp. since the objectives can be swaped out, as your sight changes, also the eyepiece!, this allows you to customise the working distance, NOT just if you can see it at all.

It is making my life so much easier. Have to say that I am impressed with what good magnification can do. Even with 'simple' cabochon settings. The difference between really getting all of your material nicely folded over the stone or thinking you have folded over everything. It's such a joy to set stones like this.

thats right, at 9:08 these are called the 'eye-pieces' what the instructions probably meant to say is to attach the eyepieces to the diopter assembly, with screws ( a jewelers or watchmakers screwdriver set will do it). The diopter is what allows for eye specific focus, aka if you wear glasses it replicates this on the microscope, so you don't need to wear the glasses while using it.

I followed your enthusiasm and ordered a tool package from Gesswein. I did not have a good buying experience. And to give them the benefit of the doubt I made several phone calls to follow up. I finally spoke with someone helpful but he was a technician fixing tools for the company. First of all there sales people are thru a third party online firm who know zero about jewelry making or any of there products. After two phone calls to ask questions because the website was not working well and I found an error. No one from the family or owners call to answer my questions or fix the website issue. I most likely will not order from them again.

Thank you so much for responding. And I have to say I am really surprised by your experience at Gesswein. I have only heard good things so far. Could you please send me a mail with your personal information at info@estona.nl? I will try to get you in contact with someone at Gesswein. I can honestly say that I am sure they will follow up to make sure this doesn't happen again.

There are very cheap and effective digital microscopes online which require hardly any set up , are smaller, Can be moved around and can do magnifications up to a few hundred x. You don’t need that, but I think it is easier, and it can also be used for other purposes. Cheap ones can be bought for around €150.
@yodan00b
@yodan00b Год назад
digital microscopes can be great for certain purposes but keep in mind that they do not offer stereoscopic vision so you have no depth perception when using them, depth perception is very important with engraving and gem setting, I speak from experience as I got one to try with engraving before getting a stereoscopic microscope and I must say that it is very difficult to do any type of engraving work with one. also from my experience the clarity given from good glass optics is very difficult to match with a digital microscope and monitor...
@greywolf271

The problem with digital imaging is the lag in update time. We have a high quality digital inspection microscope for PCB repair and even this one has a noticeable lag depending on the zoom rate. Compared to the older ( ~ 20 years ) Olympus stereo, I prefer to use the Olympus over the electronic microscope. I suspect working with gemcrafting is not as forgiving as repairing PCBs, even < 0.5mm track separation. When you need immediate visuals while cutting gems you would not get that same update rate with electronic CCD imaging.

Oeh, that really sucks... If you spend so much money and something and it isn't doing what it is supposed to do. I'm sorry to hear that Ruth. I hope you can find a way to work around it. Or maybe try to sell it and invest in something different. I am still having a lot of fun here Ruth, with making the videos. I stopped with making custom made jewelry to focus solely on my RU-vid tutorials. That is the best choice for me. Now I am only making things I love myself. How are you doing?

I have been debating for over a year now whether to get one of these tools… what about prescription glasses do you still need to wear glasses while using this microscope? your future videos would be off the scale if you also get a gift of a way to connect it to video link somehow..I’m not sure how others are able to film their setting tutorials, I’ve seen some that connect to a screen and I think they fine the screen possibly 🤷‍♀️your setting up video makes me want to buy one, but will hold off for now… can’t wait to see you use it in future videos, exciting times ahead x
@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials Год назад
I totally agree here. Maybe I should investigate options to do so. Thanks for the tip! In regards to your question about prescription glasses: I wear them myself. You don't see them on camera because I have to take them off otherwise the studio light reflects in the glasses. While using the microscope you need to take your glasses off, but seeing as how you set it to your own personal needs you can be sure that you will see perfectly sharp through it. I will definitely add a follow up tutorial on the microscope shortly.

Hi it’s been 2 months now and I’m about to order a scope but I’ve been hearing conflicting feedback regarding damage to eye site and headaches when using theses lower priced microscopes, can you give your unbiased opinion on how it has been for you and how often you use it? 🙏🏽
@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials Год назад
@@kizzywitch You really need to take some time to get it well adjusted when you first use it. For your eyes, but for your posture as well. It took me a couple of times before I knew the correct settings for me because the microscope does take a bit of getting used to. I can honestly say that I am very happy with this one. The magnification for me is great and I can't imagine needing it to magnify even more. So I don't know if there is a difference with 'cheaper' or 'more expensive' microscopes regarding damage to your eyes. I would think that if you can create a very sharp magnification it does what it's supposed to do. Of course I don't know how often you will sit behind the microscope. I make about 3 pieces a week and use the microscope every time. But as you can read I am not behind it hours per day. I would google a bit on the subject to see how people using microscopes (for instance people in laboratories) go about it. If they are familiar with eye problems after using a microscope and what can be done to avoid this.
@greywolf271
@greywolf271 Год назад
This model looks to be a copy of an older Olympus stereo inspection microscope very similar to one I use at work. I have an unequal vision that has developed over my working life, and with the Olympus, one can adjust the adjacent eyepiece to accommodate the dioptre difference between unequal vision. If the unit shown in the video has an adjustable dioptre eyepiece, you would never have a problem with getting a good image. Oh yes, I do not need to wear my reading glasses to use the Olympus. I just use the dioptre compensation for that problem.
