Professional writers bumble their way through Disco Elysium!

The fact that they were able to accomplish what they did is incredible. Oftentimes cRPGs are panned for feeling like a hollow imitation of a tabletop role-playing game because while they offer some Choice it's never that Broad and often feels like you're being railroaded into the story that the game is presenting you. Disco Elysium will let you do whatever you want and has a contingency plan for any possible option you may try and take. Many RPGs may have two or three solutions to Any Given problem. Disco Elysium has six or seven.

@@Danielsworldsthis feels like it's also a result of how the game has events happening *despite* you instead of *because of* you. That lets them push the story forward even despite the player going against it in some instances. Most RPGs are unable to achieve this because their core systems and "fun" are based on pushing events forward (completing quests, solving the mystery, stopping the end of the world, etc.) Here the core of the game is a subtle mix of world building, small-scale storytelling and-most importantly-discovering/forging an identity for your character. For example, it doesn't matter at all if you fail as a cop and mess everything up, that just means *your* character is holding up his destructive downward spiral of self-loathing... which is "fun" because of how well that story is told.

For real. It's a novel in video game form.
