I couldn’t agree more! As a 24 year old white girl (who is using her boyfriend’s RU-vid) I don’t know how I identify politically. I care about what’s going on in the country and my own community, and right now, I’m just trying to know all the facts surrounding all the controversial issues. I don’t care what they are, what side they “help”, or who they come from (if credible). Glenn Loury is someone I trust as a scholar and what he has to say about race as a black man, although I he is used as a pawn in that way sometimes too. You should really watch Marc talk to Candace Owens and see how little it he truly knows as far as American history is concerned, and he typically uses semantics or emotional arguments that sets a trap for white people in particular. I’m not sure I’m supposed to be a viewer of his channel according to him either, but I’ll listen to Glenn speak to anyone. Even Tucker Carlson!

@Darrel The numbers are actually pretty even. Best stats I could find were from 2017, when the total for whites (across federal, state, and local prisons) was 806,600 while for blacks it was 726,000. So if Loury was talking ALL prisons, he was probably correct. If you don’t take into account local jails, then the number is more for blacks: 475,900 to 436,500.

It always has been the path forward. Unfortunately, academics and intellectuals are the only ones willing to trade in ideas and visions. Anyone outside the academic sphere seems to have no interest in debate with mutual respect and a willingness to listen. I know it sounds like a broken record but I keep beating that drum - in an era of social media, advocacy journalism, yellow journalism, and political grandstanding, I don't see a way out of this. We all have the First Amendment freedoms to say what we want, but vitriolic and acerbic speech somehow needs to be disincentivized somehow.

I think Glenn brings an important perspective. I deviate from some of his more conservative convictions but I appreciate this contribution.

Glen asserts it's the Left, and MLH uses NHJ's tenure battle as a counter example. since she got her tenure, and kept her influential job (which was never in jeopardy), I'd say it's not a good example for MLH. in fact it proves Glen's point. Glen is right. Both sides cancel when they have the power, and right now that's the left. Cancelling is bad in general, even when the right did/does it.

Loury was hesitant to truly engage because I believe Marc would have put him in a position that would reveal that it is not in white people's interest to have true equality. He didn't want to have to acknowledge that. Loury is hoping white people will prove him right by truly see black humanity.

CRT is just not a reasonable or helpful solution racial inequality in America. In fact, it’s so divisive and detrimental I think we are in dangerous territory here. Facts and opinions are not the same thing, and CRT is simply not rooted in fact at all. It’s a narrative that uses some factual evidence that “supports” it but at the end of the day, to say our country is inherently racist does no good for anyone! Let’s update our history classes so that we are all taught more about what really happened, by who, etc. and it tells me we are the only country that ever abolished slavery unlike the rest of the world. We are better now than we ever were, and while we aren’t perfect, we’re still lucky to live here. I think if you really look at the idea behind the American dream and do so as it does relate to black history, would you not agree the black man (like Glenn here for example and all his success) represents it perfectly?

All the biggest names in whiteness studies, from Noel Ignatiev, to David Roediger, to their ideological lodestar, W.E.B. Du Bois (who first coined the term “whiteness” to begin with in "Souls of White Volk") were Marxist. In the examples of Ignatiev and Du Bois, they were actual Communist Party members. Du Bois learned a lot of philosphy from Johann Herder who coincidentally inspired the German nationalist movement of the early 1900s.. Ring a bell? Marx was also a racist himself so the ideological lineage is quite strong between him and Du Bois. Roediger fully embraced Du Bois’s philosophy as well as his 1991 book “The Wages of Whiteness” which spawned the discipline of “Whiteness Studies." Derrick Bell, godfather, of CRT, also incorporated elements of whiteness into his work such as "Faces At The Bottom of The Well." He inspired Kimberlé Crenshaw who coined CRT; she notably said, "We discovered ourselves to be critical theorists who did race and racial justice advocates who did critical theory.” So the Marxian connection is indisputable, which makes this quote about Marx from Angela Harris, another CRT scholar, appropriately salient: "'The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it. (Karl Marx)' Critical theory differs from pure philosophy in its motivation to provoke change, and thus it necessarily traffics in the emotions. Challenging power relations, as critical theorists love to do, means *provoking anger, disquiet, anxiety, and even fear in those with a settled understanding of who they are and where they belong."* Hmmm. Even more unsettling is the connection between CRT scholars (e.g. Angela Davis of the Women's Brigade) and the terrorist group Weather Underground... And people are surprised that BLM destroyed over $2 billion in property while its founders got rich? I concur with Loury's conscientious colorblind approach to politics where we dont ignore race completely, but we acknowledge that America is fundamentally equal across skin colors. The issues most people face today are a) due to personal choice or b) due to issues of class.

His statement is not prophecy or merely "victim mentality". It is fact based on his personal experience and that of millions of people that look like him. That and it doesn't really help Blacks at all. For example, when we look at the Medicare for All movement, that would greatly help Whites, but Blacks not so much. Blacks are still viewed as experiencing less pain than Whites, which results in a whole host of issues, from diagnosis to treatment. You would essentially be giving Blacks access to substandard care. How is that better for Blacks?

Rural whites also suffer from lack of access to healthcare not only due to cost but not having medical care facilities anywhere close to them. This is about class and those in inner city and rural areas suffer the same issue. Middle class whites and blacks don't have nearly the lack of healthcare or bias as do poor blacks and whites.
