Marc Lamont Hill sits down with Dr. Glenn Loury, an economics professor at Brown University, to talk about the latest push by conservatives to ban critical race theory and projects, such as the 1619 Project.
“Black America is grappling with newer terms of this proverbial ‘culture wars,’ such as anti-racism, ‘woke-ism’ or the true content of critical race theory,” Hill says.
Loury says that students in primary and secondary education should learn along the side of color blindness and that race isn’t the most important thing about people of color.

I couldn’t agree more! As a 24 year old white girl (who is using her boyfriend’s RU-vid) I don’t know how I identify politically. I care about what’s going on in the country and my own community, and right now, I’m just trying to know all the facts surrounding all the controversial issues. I don’t care what they are, what side they “help”, or who they come from (if credible). Glenn Loury is someone I trust as a scholar and what he has to say about race as a black man, although I he is used as a pawn in that way sometimes too. You should really watch Marc talk to Candace Owens and see how little it he truly knows as far as American history is concerned, and he typically uses semantics or emotional arguments that sets a trap for white people in particular. I’m not sure I’m supposed to be a viewer of his channel according to him either, but I’ll listen to Glenn speak to anyone. Even Tucker Carlson!

@@notherebutthere3 white men would NEVER adopt the submissive posture Loury advocates for black people. In a world where complaint is arguably the key tactic of nonviolent political advance why should black complaint be presumed to be disingenuous whining. Fox News has been complaining about the browning of America since Obama was elected. No one tells the or the tea party to "stop whining you already ruled this country for over a century." you can't name a single prominent Jewish scholar who argues that anti anti Semitism is worse than anti semitism itself. And clearly Loury is soft peddling here in order to sell the reissue of his archaic book on racial inequality. He is much more cruel towards the black community when he gets with McWhorter.

Great discussion by both guest and moderator. As someone who lives in SF and has kids in the public schools, I've seen the abuse of CRT and it's not in the classroom, it's on the school board. Rather than confronting Covid and getting kids back into school, the school board decided to rename 44 schools, including Washington HS & Jefferson HS due to historic racism by George & Abraham, declare acronyms racist and ban their use, and scapegoat Lowell HS, one of the most prestigious college prep schools in the country, as racist in order to change the admissions policy. As a result, the student population shrank, which has reduced federal funding for the district. The vast majority of parents want their kids to learn the totality of American history, good, bad, and ugly. What they don't want is for the school board to declare the school system as an extension of "white supremacy" to justify radical changes without public input.

CRT is just not a reasonable or helpful solution racial inequality in America. In fact, it’s so divisive and detrimental I think we are in dangerous territory here. Facts and opinions are not the same thing, and CRT is simply not rooted in fact at all. It’s a narrative that uses some factual evidence that “supports” it but at the end of the day, to say our country is inherently racist does no good for anyone! Let’s update our history classes so that we are all taught more about what really happened, by who, etc. and it tells me we are the only country that ever abolished slavery unlike the rest of the world. We are better now than we ever were, and while we aren’t perfect, we’re still lucky to live here. He didnt refute a single thing Loury said. He ironically got cancelled by CNN for his viewpoints on Palestinians. The Left eats its own and he was on the menu himself. Critical Race Theory is anti-White racism being popularized by the same party that started the KKK and fought for slavery. I'm good without that.

@Aaron Hackett MLH extols the virtues of CRT which is complete horse manure. That *is* the specific example. Sorry you dont like it! Another specific example is Mark's fatuous claim that CRT isnt taught in primary or secondary schools---even more horse manure. Just a cursory search on DuckDuckGo pulls up several examples which arent Law Schools. www.faithwire.com/2021/03/12/biracial-student-fails-critical-race-theory-class-for-refusing-to-confess-white-dominance-unlearn-christian-values/ CNN isnt Leftist?? 😭 1) Look, I know you have Trump Derangement Syndrome like everyone to the left of Rand Paul does, but bringing his name up doesnt score you any rhetorical points. I didnt even vote for the guy either time he ran so the strawman framing is pretty impotent. 2) CNN actively ran interference for the Democrat party during the coronavirus pandemic and the Black Lives Matter riots twin tornadoes of 2020. You think the average liberal supported their property being burned, police being defunded, the border situation imploding or the dissolution of the middle class according to a new Harvard study that gauged the economic catastrophe from the lockdowns? Didn't CNN run chyrons that said "Mostly Peaceful Protests" with raging conflagrations in the background? 😂😂 I love your 1980s to now history lesson, but neoliberalism and the military-industrial complex aside, CNN supported the largest transfer of wealth to technocratic billionaires in history on top of a racial-proletarian revolution and you don't think that smacks of socialism? Oops, I forgot! Real socialism has never been tried, so when Stalin used his stolen money to buy a summer mansion in Sochi, that wasn't _reeeal_ socialism. My apologies. Venezuela and Cuba didnt get it right either, but one of these days we'll see a working class revolt! 😎 Look buddy, I studied CRT in law school in the 2010s. I know what I'm talking about. All the biggest names in whiteness studies, from Noel Ignatiev, to David Roediger, to their ideological lodestar, W.E.B. Du Bois (who first coined the term “whiteness” to begin with in "Souls of White Volk") were Marxist. In the examples of Ignatiev and Du Bois, they were actual Communist Party members. Du Bois learned a lot of philosphy from Johann Herder who coincidentally inspired the German nationalist movement of the early 1900s.. Ring a bell? Marx was also a racist himself so the ideological lineage is quite strong between him and Du Bois. Roediger fully embraced Du Bois’s philosophy as well as his 1991 book “The Wages of Whiteness” which spawned the discipline of “Whiteness Studies." Derrick Bell, godfather, of CRT, also incorporated elements of whiteness into his work such as "Faces At The Bottom of The Well." He inspired Kimberlé Crenshaw who coined CRT; she notably said, "We discovered ourselves to be critical theorists who did race and racial justice advocates who did critical theory.” So the Marxian connection is indisputable, which makes this quote about Marx from Angela Harris, another CRT scholar, appropriately salient: "'The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it. (Karl Marx)' Critical theory differs from pure philosophy in its motivation to provoke change, and thus it necessarily traffics in the emotions. Challenging power relations, as critical theorists love to do, means *provoking anger, disquiet, anxiety, and even fear in those with a settled understanding of who they are and where they belong."* Hmmm. Even more unsettling is the connection between CRT scholars (e.g. Angela Davis of the Women's Brigade) and the terrorist group Weather Underground... And people are surprised that BLM destroyed over $2 billion in property while its founders got rich? Let's cut the crap Aaron, we all know CRT reconstructs the word "racism" in Foucaldian fashion to mean "discrimination + power" so we are arguing past each other. But based on the Webster Dictionary's definition of racism, specifically of the anti-white flavor, your mischaracterization of CRT as a mere "critique" and a mere extension of Critical Legal Studies is facile, insipid and downright mendacious. There was even an educational worksheet that the Museum of African American History, a part of the Smithsonian, released last summer for classroom use, which said that ideas like hard work, punctuality, arithmetic, and politeness are just evidence of systemic racism (“whiteness”) in American life. Ridiculous. I guess the Indians and Chinese are suffering from white supremacy while dominating medical and technology sectors. Also.. Seriously, the Southern Strategy? You get all your news from Salon? This argument was soundly debunked by Dinesh D'Souza and many others. Blacks, aka the *victims" of the confederacy voted predominantly Republican at a time when the Democratic Party was manifestly the party of segregation and the Ku Klux Klan. However, that changed when FDR, who got less than 1/3 of the black vote in 1932, got 75% of the black vote in 1936 thanks to the New Deal. LBJ got 90% thanks to Great Society reparations programs. So which switch were we talking about? D'Souza says, "And how many racist Dixiecrats did Nixon win for the GOP? Turns out, virtually none. Among the racist Dixiecrats, Strom Thurmond of South Carolina was the sole senator to defect to the Republicans - and he did this long before Nixon's time. Only one Dixiecrat congressman, Albert Watson of South Carolina, switched to the GOP. The rest, more than 200 Dixiecrat senators, congressmen, governors and high elected officials, all stayed in the Democratic Party." Barry Goldwater was called racist because he opposed the CRA due to libertarian disagreements. And Nixon using "law & order" messaging was considered dog-whistling. No evidence whatsoever and George Wallace, a professional bigot, won the Deep South over Nixon. Are you also blissfully ignorant that Joe Biden was friends with James O. Eastland, Herman Talmadge and other Dixiecrats. Biden was a true Yellow Dog dixiecrat who opposed bussing and created myriad crime bills! Judge Joe Brown confirmed a story about him being praised by Dixiecrats for that very fact. But Republicans are the "white" party? LOL. The projection is sad. You dont know your history or political theory bro. Now begone.

I was thinking the same thing. But I think he was looking to navigate a hostile environment with calm talk . Hoping he could actually be heard by an audience that would not normally listen. But he was way softer on his opinions as he expressed on his podcast. He also never called mark on all his double talk. Claiming there is no crt then defending crt. Claiming cancel culture doesn't exist. Then claiming some people need to be cancelled, And saying that right wingers are only upset because it's them for being canceled. Acknowledging that they are being cancel they're just upset that it's them. Then being upset that 1 of the left's 1619 project authors was being canceled. And then specifically said that she was be Canceled. Glenn did a good job of navigating what could have been A talk over each other interview that got nothing out. I thought he sports a good points made some solid arguments. But I wish he would have been a little more firm. But I still love the man.

MLH is not an idiot, and not truly a lightweight - but he is very much a manipulator. A operator, not a thinker. . 1) he is ALWAYS the last person speaking before a strategic ‘break’. Always. 2) after the ‘break’ he therefore gets to restate his point ostensibly for clarity - but in reality, for emphasis. 3) a tactic he uses with every guest with opposing viewpoints is that immediately after trying to rebut their argument (often unconvincingly), he tacks on the phrase ....”but I also want to mention x.y.z and to get your view on that”. He does this EVERY time he knows his ‘defence’ was weak - and because of the pressured, short-form format, no-one pushes back on it. An operator.

He may be doing all those things but he did conduct a reasonable interview with someone he disagrees with. Much more high profile interviewers could learn a lot from him. Credit to Glenn too for holding back on NHJ. He could have launched into how he believes here are significant mistakes in her 1619 work, but decided just to answer the question directly on its own terms and not bring in associated information to argue that she isn't as scholarly as the interviewer perhaps thinks, or wishes to show.

Great conversation.
