Professor McGonnagall is the kind of teacher that as a child you think is too strict only to grow up and realize you have enormous respect for her because she actually cared and was one of the best teachers you ever had.
I had one of those teachers at the very last year of primary school (Brit here). Looking back I wouldn't have had it any other way. She really finished up this half of our education in a strong way.
McGonagall: "We never use transfiguration as punishment!" Also McGonagall 3 years prior: "You were late, perhaps I should transfigure the two of you into a pocketwatch and map?!"
She's making it clear that, while it was a good thing to protect a fellow student, they were still blithering idiots who could have easily been killed.
It’s funny McGonnagal was dressed as if she were always ready to be Head Mistresses. When she banishes Snape and stands where he stood, she’s already in control
She was Professor for Transfiguration, Head of Gryffindor House and Deputy Headmistress - she was in control and couldn't complain about too much free time, having 3 full-time jobs.
Actually Snape was one of the few teachers too. Snape made it clear "Fame isn't everything." He knows Harry survived Voldemort, but he won't treat him any different than the rest.
@@vinnyl264 True, but after understanding Snape's past he's not actually being hateful to Harry, he just can't ignore the fact he looks exactly like his father, the very person who caused him so much torment during his school years. When you weight all that Snape did to protect Harry behind his back, he isn't as bad as he seems.
@@SledRider-bf3ih he’s still being hateful…. And it’s actually even worse when you find out the reason. Snape is literally treating him badly due to his father, and nothing Harry did himself
@@vinnyl264 Fair point. But he won't treat him like he's royalty, after all everyone sees him as the chosen one which couldn't be any further from the truth, but he keeps his head knowing that he's still a regular student behind the title so he won't treat him like everyone of the other teachers. He does care enough to protect him, because he is the only living child of the woman he loved. I guess it stems from the fact that Snape spent so many years of torment at the hands of the Maurauders (mostly James) that just seeing Harry's face floods him with too many dark memories considering he does look like James after all. I would like to imagine how he would treat Harry if he were still alive after the Battle of Hogwarts. Perhaps he would've been different? But during his last moments, he does reveal he has a soft spot after all only at the time of death does a man truly reveal himself.
@@chantal6806 yeah, ask that to the director, actors and the whole team. It takes so much time and efforts to make a two hour long movie so imagine how long would it take and how hard of a job it is to make 12hr long. It's always easier said than done dude.
The way she ignored Umbridge in the Order of the Phoenix...I just couldn't believe that it was McGonagall who was behaving as if she didn't give a damn. I love how Umbridge manages to bully all teachers but fails to insult professor McGonagall as she always got to Umbridge first. I adored her so much in Ootp, she was the only one who was able to deal with Umbridge and always sassed her.
I love how instead of moving up the stairs again to look down on Umbridge when she questions her loyalty, she moves back down towards the kids, not because she's backing down, but because her loyalty is to them.
Yeah thats a new view… i took at as its abt authority… first coming up to say I stand on the same ground not below, (thats just humble, coz she was way superior as a wizard), but wen Umbridge brings politics n ministry, she steps back as, No I am not a part of that pool… I am the school team…
Actually, in the movie at least, Minerva takes a step down because she's shocked at being called "disloyal" in essence by Umbridge. Nobody would ever question McGonagall's morals, especially her loyalty to both Dumbledore and her students as well as the good of the people in general. Hence the utter shock in her tone and how she almost stumbles back.
The fact that most of her lines in order of phoenix were cut and she was still this iconic. "Do you need a cough drop, Dolores?" "Have a biscuit Potter" Telling peeves the chandelier unscrews the other way
Snape actually Carried the whole movie series. There's no harry without snape. Snape until 7th part: Fool, selfish, arrogant, boring, unmarried, ridiculous, evil, unnecessary, most hated, liar, dark, idiot. Snape after 7th part: *Most loved, *kind hearted, *The person who didn't marry 1.even after his true love married someone he hated the most 2. Even after his true love died *Cared about the son of guy who bullied him. *Protected harry since he was kid "The one who didn't seem to care at all, is the one who cared the most " - J.K Rowling.
BUT SHE DID THO! LIKE SHE LITERALLY FOUGHT IN BATTLE FOR IT AS AN OLD PERSON, LIKE HOW IN THE FUCK, DO U SUMMON THE STRENGTH AT THAT AGE TO LEAD A BATTLE AGAINST THE DARK LORD, FIGHT HIM ONE ON ONE, SUMMON SOILDERS, FIGHT SNAPE WHOS THE HARRY POTTER VERSION OF A SUPER SPY, AND L I V E THROUGH IT LIKE- HOW IN THE FUCK IS SHE THAT MUCH OF A BADASS? IMAGINE HER FIGHTING SKILLS IN AN ALL OUT WARFIELD WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER- LIKE F U C K, SHE IS NOT SOME ONE TO FUCK WITH AT ALL
I still think Harry did Minerva wrong by not naming one of their kids aftet Minerva. He named his kid after Dumbledore and EVEN SNAPE who didn't even respect him whatsoever until he learn't his story. Meanwhile Minerva, LITERALLY THE BEST MOTHER FIGURE HE COULD HAVE HAD, gave him his own broom which costed tons, and treated him like an actual normal person. Harry you dumby 🙄🤦♀️
@@tejasl9622 Mcgonagall punished him in his first year by making him attend detention with the trio for being out at night too, so this might be his third punishment. The second one was in third year when Hermione sucker punched him in the face.
The best part is, since Barty Jr. didn't make her or Dumbledore suspicious of him, the real Moody probably would have done the same thing. Barty Jr. may have been a loathsome slimeball but he played Moody pretty well.
@@christinebutler7630 It's a coincidence that you comment now, since I actually just watched a Christmas movie today that she was featured in. As usual, her performance was superb.
The fact that this woman explains the topic and then TRANSFORMS INTO A CAT while the students write and she just chills in her table may I remind you AS A CAT is the definition of iconic
Part of me wonders if the real Alastor Moody would've done that as well. I like to think yes, even though Barty Crouch Jr was a step above in craziness.
Then again, if Voldemort had just ordered Barty Crouch Jr to bring him a vial with a bit of Harry's blood instead of going through all this tournament stuff where it wasn't even sure Harry would win, he would have been reborn 9 months earlier, and Dumbledore would have been none the wiser.
Not really, he was able to be revived without Harry, but he wanted to use his blood. If he hadn't used his blood as he did Harry wouldn't have been able to survive his Avada Kedavra in the last movie, so it was for the best.
@@Faceless_time_traveler later on they went to Hagrid's (off the castle limits) and got caught by McGonagall, the three of them losing 50 each. Kinda harsh considering that they knocked out a mountain troll as first years (amazing feat) to save a classmate and got only 5
McGonagall is a sweetheart teacher that can be serious and strict, but also tenderly and heartwarming. But want an example of how BAD of an idea it is to anger her? - Snape pulls out his wand >everyone freaks out< - McGonagall pulls out her wand >everyone freaks out *even more
It's funny because in PoA, Hermione implies Professor McGonagall didn't have much respect for Divination/Professor Trelawny, but when Umbridge publically humiliates her she wastes no time in standing up for her. It's really sweet.
she has zero respect for Divination. but Umbridge is pure evil so McGonagall would stand for anybody against Umbridge. ok. maybe she wouldn't stand for voldemort or bellatrix but I'm sure you can see the point.
@@WilliamWizer more like, someone bullying a nice woman. She didn't care if she agreed with her class what umbridge did was terrible and if you fire a teacher it's not in front of students, so like the great woman she is she stood up for her.
@@Ilivepuppys she's more than a great woman. she carries the name of a goddess and honors that name with her actions. I agree with you. no teacher should be fired in front of the students. what you do is you fire the teacher behind the scenes and then tell the students that the teacher had to leave "for personal reasons" or some similar BS.
And bear in mind, she's been rubbishing Trelawney and the subject of Divination for years. You _know_ stuff's getting really serious at Hogwarts when McGonagall openly consoles and sides with Trelawney in front of the student body.
@@gengarzilla1685 McGonagall will always trash divination and Trelawney as a teacher but what Dolores was doing was inhumane. there was no way McGonagall wasn't going to act on it. McGonagall my not aprove of the profesionalism of Trelawney but she plainfully hates Dolores will all her being. going a bit crazy, you could make this comparison: McGonagall is the joker, Trelawney is batman and Dolores is any other villain. Joker wants to defeat Batman but NOBODY else has the right to do it.
I'm never getting over the fact that Barty Crouch Jr, a death eater, turned Draco Malfoy, son of known death eater and close confidant of LORD VOLDEMORT, into a ferret for attempting to attack Harry and actually had fun doing it AND continued to threaten Draco with embarrassing stories about his dad.... I feel like he might have taken his assignment a little too seriously😂 His acting job was truly outstanding honestly, I never would have doubted him for a second if I was a kid at Hogwarts
If I remember right, another factor is that Barty Crouch Jr also despises death eaters who didn't go looking for Voldemort after his defeat in Godric's Hollow, and tried to renounce him and go back to their lives as if they hadn't served him. He despises their weak loyalty to Voldemort. So his attack on Malfoy is genuine, and ALSO serves to conceal his identity more thoroughly
I love that her presence was always comforting, even as strict and no-nonsense as she was. Maybe that came from reading the books, but she’s just all the best things. I’ll always be grateful to Dame Maggie Smith for bringing those qualities to the role.
Mad respect to both Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman, who both fought cancer while filming Deathly Hallows, but still gave us the best they had. They perfectly embodied two characters among the most memorable of the film series. Rest in Peace Alan Rickman.
She was my favorite Hogwarts teacher. She was harsh but fair, and she deeply cared for the children under her care. I had a teacher like her. She was just awesome.
The fact that even though she didn’t like Trewalney, and greatly disliked the subject she taught, she still stood up for her when Umbridge threw her out. Absolute queen 👑
@@aasthaanuragini644 Here’s the short thing. Harry gets sent to Mcgonagall for shouting at Umbridge she asks Did you shout at her? Did you call her a liar and then the unexpected line “Have a biscuit Potter”
She’s a tough but fair teacher, it’s also great that she would later become headmistress of Hogwarts after the battle. The school is definitely in good hands with her in charge.
7:42 cut off the best bit; Minerva McGonagall: “Why don't you confer with Mr. Finnigan? As I recall, he has a particular proclivity for pyrotechnics.” Seamus Finnigan: “I can bring it down!” Minerva McGonagall: “That's the spirit, now away you go.” …. Also, wish they’d had McGonagal leading a charge of enchanted desks into battle, like the book 🤣
3:26 I love this scene. It’s so iconic and totally fits umbridges character going up a step to try and be higher than mcgonagall just as she was hungry to be high in the ministry
I love the sequence from 4:00. Her facial expressions and small headshakes are very her. Sidenote: The first film got Hermione's hair right. It was described as bushy, and in the rest of the films it was simply wavy and nice-looking.
Apparently they dropped that and the buck teeth because Emma Watson found them too cumbersome later on. Daniel Radcliffe was going to wear green eye contacts too, but it turned out he was actually allergic to them.
@@gengarzilla1685 I agree with the buck teeth being too cumbersome but, what about the bushy hair? worst possible case, wear a wig. I see it more as a way to make look the character better looking for the movies so they can show a good looking girl when a new movies was advertised.
@@rovanajean9550 any actor/actress worth of that name is able to look pretty, handsome, ugly, deformed or anything else his/her role requires. make up and wigs can do miracles.
@@WilliamWizer oh plz anne Hathaway in la miserable is still looking fine. Even Bellatrix who is Helena Bonham Carter is still glimmering with her crazy hair and teeth. Unless ur saying use CGI to change their face
At about 7:21 where shape and mcgongall fights, shape is actually protecting her from the two people behind him... (look carefully it's kinda funny that made it to the final cut )
Little McGonagall bich didn't knew she is attacking one of the best headmasters of hogwarts and the hero of the series. Hero without whom, harry is nothing. Snape sacrificed a lot, stayed single after her love married the guy he hated. He didn't remarry. He even took care of their kid. No character in the movie has such a flashback as snape. Even Dumbledore doesn't stand before him. The potions master who created new spells and had to kill his companion albus unwillingly to gain trust of the dark lord . He was considered boring evil character until the last part it was revealed he was the most beautiful character. "' the one who didn't seem to care at all is the one who cared the most" - jk Rowling
@@naveenk2524 can you stop? They ALL thought that snape was evil. It was supposed to be like this. DONT rant against McGonagall in a video all about her.
@@naveenk2524 also your rant holds little water. He was still horrible to all but a select few of the students in his care. All of the good things he did does not negate the fact that he was horrible. He is the most morally grey character I’ve ever found. His actions helped defeat the darkest wizard of the age. But he was also a shitty teacher to non- Slytherins. The way he bullied Neville to the point that he was the thing Neville feared the most is bordering on the insane. He made fun of Hermione in his own classroom after Malfoy shot a teeth enlarging jinx at her. He held contempt for Harry for things that were not his fault. Oh and he held onto school Bullying that should have been moved on from. Oh and also he called the woman he loved a mud blood so yea. The man helped defeat Voldemort but let’s not sit here and say he was a saint .
*cutely and excitedly says* "ive always wanted to do that spell" For real tho, mcgonagall gave harry the most expensive broom (at the time) for him to play frickin first year quidditch he aint even of age Also, she frickin attacked snape like, that was HEADMASTER (when she deserved the title since shes carrying hogwarts on her back) and she ws like NOT TODAY thats why i dont like it when they say she's straight as a line cause we dont need to give her more weight when she's been carrying hogwarts on her back
Friendly reminder that Harry loved McGonagall so much he was able to use the Cruciatus curse in full effect just because one of the Carrows spit (spat? spatted?) in her face.
@@muninrob I was only joking ;-; My humor is broken enough that incorrectly pronouncing the past tense of a word by replacing the correct vowel with an o is funny
I wish the filmmakers could have included more scenes between McGonagall and Dolores from the book even as deleted scenes but honestly the scene on the stairs was GOLD!
I freaking love her. She was at her best in books 5 and 7. She reminds me a bit of a public health teacher I had in college though that teacher wasn’t as strict. She was firm and a hard teacher and grader but not reasonable. She always stressed the importance of supporting your claims with data. It was her trademark. She also always gave you the materials and support you needed to do well on her assignments so her stricter grading was justified. Ironically, she was the only teacher I got a 100 on a paper with my sophomore year. One of my proudest college achievements.
I especially appreciate the moment when she comes to Trelawney's side. She didn't even like her, and yet came to her and offered support and comfort. I love her.
I will not sugarcoat it, She was a great actress. Kind, but she could still slam the door in your face. It must have been difficult for her to act so well while battling cancer, such a queen, truly.
"I've always wanted to use that spell!" She's adorable On a side note though, this character is definitely one of my favourites, Maggie Smith put so much life into something that was just written on paper 😍
I know this is about Minerva but that look on Severus' face at 6:02! 🤣 I can't help but crack up. It's one of my favorite moments with him as well as Minerva's "For sheer dumb luck." 😅
To Minerva's good credit-- that LOOK Snape has when he realizes he's got to go up against his friend and colleague. Ugh. Snape's so jaded but he respects the shit out of her, I'm sure of.
When you see snape deflecting McGonagall, it actually hit the 2 death eaters in the back foreshadowing that he's still a professor against the dark arts
Minerva was a mother to her students, family to her coworkers and defender for the school. She took genuine interest in her students no matter what house they belonged to. She’s shown time and time again that she’d lay hands on anyone she deemed necessary for the sake of her family, even other people she considers family. To grow up with her as an inspiration was truly an honor.
8:17 I feel like the actress that played McGonagall read the books back in the day and had been waiting yearrrrrs for this moment in the movie to catch up 🤣🤣🤣
I love mcgonagal. She’s tough, but only because she really truly loves her job and the children she works with. When she says “Potter… it’s good to see you” always makes me tear up.
I just noticed this, they switched cats, three times, first, it was the grey stripe, then it was orange and white, then back to the grey striped before transfiguring into McGonagall
