This is the first segment of the first volume on "How to Program a PLC". In this series, we will examine an application and then create the code (logic) for the control of the discussed applicaiton. In this first segment, we discuss the electrical design which we will later convert to logic. This series will take you through the process of writing a program for a specific application. this first one is very simple.

The job market for controls engineers is still growing, couple that with engineers retiring faster than graduating and you can't lose. The university or college that you are attending should be able to point you to companies that take on interns.

PLC Prof, great job on the rework on your videos. I have been away for a long time and have now just returned to your RU-vid site. I will watch all of these again. I think you have done a great job and there is a need for these training videos. Thanks again.

This is really good stuff plcprofessor! I recommend my techs to watch your videos. On this example however, 1LS needs to be located at the bottom of the door rail so the door strikes 1LS on closed. The way it's drawn now, the door would never close. Not one to correct people, but one of my techs brought this up and was going to add a timer to the program after 1LS was made. Just food for thought. Excellent job, thank you.

The content is sufficient for anyone and those who don't need the detail skip ahead. I am adopting a color code for level, blue titles for basics, green for a little more advanced and reds for advanced. RSLinx I will have to change the color on that one. Thanks for the input.

Very clear explanation, I waited to see or hear a mention of a PLC , I wish the title was not so misleading, even though it does say, it's an introduction.
@plcprofessor
@plcprofessor 10 лет назад
Keep watching the series, it was broken up into approx 30 minute parts to provide easy management by the learner. My goal is that the content be sufficient for the person with no knowledge of even basic electrical control. It is the introduction to the series of clips that is one lecture.

They would be listed in the table of contents in the manual and by title in the supporting video series.

I like the way you used something as simple as a garage opener for an example. It is easy to follow for those new to this technology. I just noticed 1 item you might consider changing. First is on the 2nd example when you introduced 1CR. Your explanation of relay operation was backwards (explaining NO & NC contact). I can also be out to lunch and misinterpreted what you said.
@plcprofessor
@plcprofessor 10 лет назад
I watched that portion to be sure and it is correct. The symbols are static, meaning that they do not change appearance when the coil is energized.

Hello. I have a question: Is it worth it to start a career in PLC programming in these times? I really like plc and right now im working my thesis on them. If it is do you know where should I start looking for my intership?

Hey, I'm trying to figure out how to do multiple input combinations that will give out certain outputs. Example if inputs A and B are on then output Z turns on, if input A is on and B is off then output Y is on. It's been a while, but I remember my teacher said that one rung can only have one output and each rung must happen for the next rung below to occur.

I knew the drawing was ambiguous, but I decided that the door could hit the switch when it reached the closed position plus you have NO and NC with those limit switches so you can use it in that position either way. Too late to change the graphic to make it less confusing. I appreciate the feedback regardless because we need to know what people see and how they interpret what we have used.

Hi prof, at 24:54 , can you please list down stepwise (sequence of push-buttons we have to push) if we want to move door up upto a certain point, stop movement and then close down door? It will be helpful to understand.

You should show that the 2CR and 1CR 'B' or NS contacts are being driven off of the relay and not the contacts diverting around the up or down buttons. Also, should probably name the contacts for those buttons 1C and 2C to alleviate any confusion with 1CR and 2CR.

Thank you for the video. I am new at this and i got confused so i have a question: At the end PE contact is NO. Isn't that supposed to be NC contact so it cuts the power when PE detects an object while garage door goes down?
@plcprofessor
@plcprofessor 7 лет назад
I am not sure of the context of your question. However, photoelectric sensors can be light operate and dark operate, they can have normally open contacts and normally closed contacts. A contact drawn in the schematic will change state when the state of the optical path changes, going from open to closed or closed to open, designer's choice. Ideally...If the sensor fails, the garage door would not close...fail safe.

Mr. Yildirim, good day. I got same confusion for the first time. But realized by the explanation of PLCprofessor that the PE is normally ‘ON’, and the relay of PE must be ‘True’ as A contact(NO). We can recall ‘true if on. So when the PE is cut by something( means ‘off’), the PE relay will be deenergized which means ‘False’. And this ‘False’ means stop the door while it was coming down. I hope this to help. Your question helped me study more and made me understood. Thank You!!

Hello plcprofessor, I am a software engineering graduate, and i want to go to deeper into automation field (actually i am interested in plc programming, i had a project using arduino uno and c language before, but plc programming is different it is all about logic circuits), and is electrical knowledge is required in this field or not?, if it is, please can you guide me where should i start?? thank you very much...
@plcprofessor

You cannot lose in this field with some solid electrical knowledge. There are many excellent discussions on RU-vid for basic electricity and electronics.

I just started with your tutorials on PLC's and I am at a complete loss of your use of the terminology "True" and "False" for what I think is on and off. It completely throws me off. Never in my life have I heard that used, I have always used terms like open, closed, normally open, normally closed, on, off, energized, de energized. More than most likely its due to the fact I am new to PLC's. In any event I like your videos.
@plcprofessor
@plcprofessor 7 лет назад
Hang in there...read instructions are true or false, output instructions set bits ON or OFF. Keep watching, this is computer programming, not electrical circuits.
@shawnburns1744

Maybe I'm watching the wrong videos, I'm an electrician try to learn the basics of PLC'S. I am in no way a computer programmer.

Have you watched his introduction to PLCs lectures part 1 and 2? (2 separate videos) I think that they would help clear that up. I had a problem for a minute until I watched them and re-watched a couple parts.
