This tutorial shows how to use Collections in QLC+ to create lighting scenes more quickly and easily. Think of elements of your rig as building blocks such as wash lights, spot lights, moving lights and effect lights. Then use the "collection" feature in QLC+ to easily combine them into a single scene. This is also extremely helpful when programming moving or intelligent lights. Record positions. color, gobo, focus and effects as separate scenes then combine them as needed using the "collection" feature as needed. It is very similar to using pallets that are often part of high end lighting consoles.
This series of videos was created to help community theater groups. It is an introduction and series of tutorials using QLC+, a lighting program that can replace a traditional light board and is a great alternative to community theater groups due to its attractive cost.

What’s the software you have used to create the 3D stage? Is it built within QLC?

The software in this video is Magic 3D Easy View. Here is some info I did a bit of research on Magic 3D Easy View so here is what I found. You can download a working version of Magic 3 D Easy View Here: magic-3d-easyview.software.informer.com/download/ A couple of notes: When I was installing this my antivirus software flagged it for unknown files and I had to click “allow” in order for it to install. It looks like a false positive since I have had no virus issues when running the software. I would recommend restarting your computer after install. Make sure you have QLC+ set to output ArtNet Universe 1 with the address of your computer if you are running both programs on the same computer. For example mine is set to output Universe 1 ArtNet 10.0.0.25 Make sure you select ArtNet when starting Magic 3D EasyView and set up your universes. If it doesn’t work the first time, close the software and reboot the program. Some people are having trouble accessing the artnet. I found this info on the QLC+ Blog: I struggled quite some time on getting the Art-Net to work on ALL my computers. On some it did work right away, on other: no luck. What seemed to be the problem: multiple network interfaces! When I disabled my VMWare virtual network interfaces (and therefore had a system with just one network interface), I was able to use Art-Net in Magic 3D Easy View. So: make sure your computer has only one (enabled) network interface, and you should be able to use Art-Net. I would make sure that you uninstall the current version of the program before installing this version. The program will say DEMO but most features will function without limits. The Full version of the program is no longer available. Another possible visualization program you may look at is the student version of Capture www.capture.se/Downloads/Download-Capture Scroll to the bottom of the page to download the Student Version NOTE: The student version does not support moving lights. Another possibility is using something besides QLC+ Chamsys Magic Q chamsyslighting.com/products/magicq?variant=7841688715300 This software has a built in visualizer See my series of videos on the MagicQ Soiftware ru-vid.com/group/PL_kjo8_ebNRGjTLXvn620H9zrtzcqbD6I Best Wishes Ed Richards

Hello. Sorry I did not get back to you sooner but I was on vacation. At this time I am not doing any zoom meetings. The best way to correspond is through email. If you have any specific questions or would like to see a tutorial created just email me. I have helped several people with specific circumstances they had questions about. You can email me directly at ctltech2@outlook.com.

What is the benefit to create a scene from a collection? Thanks

Hi Alex, good question On many professional lighting consoles you can create "presets" where you can quickly call up groups of lights at a preset intensity, color, focus, position, etc. Then you record the look you created into a cue. In place of "presets", QLC+ uses "Collections" where you can combine smaller scenes (groups of lights set to specific values) into one large scene. It basically helps to make programming quicker. Example: Lets say I have a rig with 8 FOH lights, 8 down stage lights, 8 center stage lights, 8 up stage lights, 24 LED color wash lights and 2 moving head LED wash lights. Before I begin to program my show I create a number of small scenes with groups of lights. I create 10 small scenes for my FOH lights set to 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and FULL. I do the same for my down stage lights, center stage lights and up stage lights. For my color wash LEDs I create scenes with them set to red, green, blue, yellow, aqua, etc. For my moving head LED I create several position scenes, several color scenes, and several zoom/focus scenes. Now I save this as a template and I am ready to start programming. For my first cue I create a collection then add in my small scenes: FOH @ 25%, down stage @ 50%, center stage @ 50%, up stage @ 70%, color wash LEDs @ blue and moving light position up stage center, color red, zoom 50%. Boom - I'm done. In order to create this same look in a single scene I would have to select a lot of lights and move a lot of sliders which would take more time. Yes, creating the template would take time initially but once its done, now I can work faster. If i'm doing a production with more than 150 light cues, it is a lot faster !!
