How to make a beat... behind the beat? Another part of Samuel Prather's "A Reason to Create" series; in this installment Sam tries to demystify what it means to play behind the beat and how to mimic that in your tracks. There are also some tips for drumming that apply to digital and real drummers alike.

"Someone has to be ON the beat" No other video tells then shows that. Brilliant.

Thank you very much Sam. You really explained it perfectly. It opened my eyes. Especially that you played around a bit and put only upbeats back, then only the bass back, so I could realise the different feels. Very simple yet powerful explanation.

To the point and fun to watch! Guess I’m older, but how about when Chuck Rainey was behind and Bernard Purdy was ahead ?

I must be old too, because I love Bernard and Chuck lol I think the bass being a little behind the drums is pretty normal in soul music; I think it be a little weird hearing it the other way around

7:55 LOL. I agree if you learn how to groove without moving the tempo you will sound way more expressive. This goes beyond drums and bass you can play behind the beat on any instrument and people that are listening to you might don't understand the theory behind but they're going to have a good time enjoying the music. Something similar happens with microtones and not playing the notes to the perfect pitch here and there when playing solo lines or the concept of playing outside to create tension and then resolving

Absolutely! Everybody can benefit from understanding how to push and pull time without the tempo moving

less than 2 minutes in it's obvious that while this man is pulling zero punches, that he's coming from all the right experience and has earned all the stripes needed to give learners a proverbial smack in the back of the head. as an intermediate producer and beginner drummer, i'm glad to listen to some stern advice from someone who's sharing real wisdom from the right place. respect.

@@blackpranther you might have been gritting your teeth to stay nice about it but it seemed like ultimately you said your piece and got your message across. When it comes to this stuff I'm hanging on every word cuz I'm a novice as both a producer and drummer, so i can learn a lot from perspectives on both. I gotta love advice that gets to the core of what's important for both, so i can have the best foundation for ultimately finishing tracks where the percussion, whether live or programmed, can strike the appropriate and intended balance of tight and organic. I gotta appreciate advice that lends to not wasting time, so i say being blunt (not rude, just totally honest and straightforward) is almost always the best way. I'm not here to be a snowflake, I'm here to be the best musician i can be. 😎

Amazing series of videos. Very insightful and some of the best material I've seen. I use the Reason Rack with Reaper, but really your tips are so general and useful to every one who makes music. I don't think you need that many camera angles though!

Thanks! I’m glad the info is useful. I could probably make my life a lot easier if I just shot with one camera but I have a background in video, so even though it’s a little work I just want to be happy with how they look and sound too. I’m definitely still figuring it out though
@dbo514

samuel prather For sure! Its obvious you got video skills but im just not sure the video needs many closeups and angles, the material is key and keep it simple with just the screen capture and one camera angle makes it more comfortable. Anyway that’s nitpicking you make really insightful videos! Happy new year!

dbo514 There’s a tough balance to keep between too much and not enough in the production quality realm. I’m just not a fan of the picture in picture aesthetic but I always strive to keep the info the primary focus. Thanks for watching and commenting bro! Happy Holidays

Very nice for programming. Most live drummers have a hard enough time playing on time consistently. Splitting up elements is too much to ask.

Thank you, bro! While I agree, beginners and most hobbyists might not be able to separate a part like that, professionals and high end enthusiasts probably can if they work on it
