This is a good trick to know, but is very much to be reserved for "up the creek" moments (ie, last resort). I just tried it out and it works mostly well for modified-D biners (quick-draw style). I thought I was using identical ones, but after the fact, it looks like I used a Metolius + Trango (thought it was two Metolius), the Trango is ever so slightly larger. Still, good to know that the hitch *can* work with sufficiently similar biners. Anyway, what I found is that for modified-D, the hitch works "best" with both gates down as the rope gravitates to the paired straight sides, but with both gates up (narrow end down), the rope gravitates to the gate sides, resulting in the rope rubbing on the wires (both biners were wire-gate) or, I imagine, worse: the pins for solid-gate biners. Again, good trick to know, but I think I'll stick to something like a Traxion when I can :)

Mate, this is brilliant. Just tried it with PETZL tri-lock Krabs and it worked perfectly. I'm a level 3 rope access tech and i'm always looking to learn ways we could get out of situations if we didn't have enough kit/lost something into the sea. Keep the videos coming, knowledge like this is worth it's weight in whisky. Slainte

I think having the sling girth hitched onto the pair of biners might help hold them in position better than having them simply clipped though a loop.

As well as the grivel double gate biners the edelrid slide could work well for added safety - obviously low odds you'll have two of those left! I tested it with my BD quickdraw using the two carabiners off that and it seemed to work okay 👌

I'm going to let Pandora out of her box and admit it. I usually watch your videos for entertainment value only but this is actually something I've never seen before. I don't plan on ever needing progress capture and not having it but cool to see

I always have two Grivel Plume twin gate (wire) carabiners on my harness. Would be perfect for this scenario

I used this for a foot ascender and had it fail on 2 separate occasions where one of the wire gate carabiners (matching pair) eats the other. I would not recommend wire gates for this technique

Use the stuflesser. You can use with two screw gate biners and they even can be different biners.

I always carry some tape (20 or 30 cm) rolled around the spine of my troubleshootng biner in case i have to rappel leaving my own non locking biners behind (cheaper than the locking ones). I guess that with a couple of wraps around the gate opening, the problem of the biners opening would be sorted. I think maybe the edelrid pure slider locking biner could work for this, since the locking mechanism is hidden inside the arm. Thank you for your channel, I enjoy it a lot

I was going to mention the grivel biners! Cool that you had one. I’d be interested to see how strong the Garda hitch is. By the way, what is the name of the lockers you had with the blue barrels? I collect biners when I’m not using them 😁 just found your channel, and love it! Cheers

I don't think I'd ever use this instead of an autolocking munter hitch, unless I'm using a super stiff rope. The only downside is a little more friction than with the garda hitch, the upsides are that you can use any two biners and the changeover to lower or rappel is pretty simple.

I’m interested to know what sort of loads the Garda can support. It seems that the “pinching” carabiner puts a considerable amount of force on one spot of the rope when under load. Does anyone know this?
@BetaClimbers

Curious if you have ever messed with a blakes hitch for this type of application. Seems like you could rig up a progress capture system with even less equipment.
@BetaClimbers
@BetaClimbers 4 года назад
David Mcgowan I have used a prussic but not. Blake. Very interesting I’m amazed how many ways there are to skin a cat. There is even a method where you throw a carabiner into a munter to stop it from flipping. I’m sure I’ll cover these at some point. Thanks for the idea!
