How would you go about making Custom Hood Struts for a 60-66 C10 pickup? Well follow along and see how I did it! This is by far the best video on you tube for the classic Chevy/GMC truck hood hinges. Wait! Do you hear that noise? It’s the sound of Ford Expedition tailgates hitting the ground as hinges, gas struts and ball studs disappear. This was absolutely a great design from existing parts but adding strength and now it’s better. I don’t know what vehicles you have worked on, but even the 60’s Thunderbird has hinges that allowed the hood to open 2 and 1/2 foot!!! Well, maybe a little more but stupid low. I had to change a brake booster on one and I am 6’3” tall. It’s been years, but I talk the owner into taking the hood off. Many hoods do not open far, but today, gas struts new barely hold the hood/tailgate if it has a little snow weight. Congrats on this one small step for man, one giant leap for C10’s. God bless your dad, what a guy. Maybe I will meet mine. Nah! Be safe. ASE Master Tech since 1978 - Retired

Found this video very useful, didn’t know there were more creative ways in mounting struts, I pulled the trigger on buying 20” struts which may be too big to mint the modern way, but maybe mounting them on the cowl can save me some space

I had a 63 C10 my hinges were completely different and the hood springs were mine works really good just need a new Springs

I have used windshield urethane to secure crossmembers like that on many panels

Great video, Alan... as usual. Showing detail takes time. Yet you managed to squeeze a lot into a 19 minute video with an intro and an outro! Not all jobs are best shown on the high-speed ticky-tocky platform. ;) Too much condensing removes learning moments. Backwards engineering isn't always a bad thing. Forward engineering can sometimes cause the good old "paralysis by analysis". Having multiple perspectives on a job is useful.

Not bad. I been building the same basic idea for the 67-79 f series guys. I was able to make those a basic bolt on design.

Ok, im installing a hood scoop on 63 c10. And realized the springs are having trouble supporting the extra weight. So struts came to mind. Found this vid right on time. Thanks Also, for this type of hood, the scoop will have to be curved in front. I made 2 small relief cuts before heating it to shape. Any pointers on that?

Footage is filmed, just have spend a couple days putting it into a coherent explanation and film the talking head portion. So... soon? Sooner than later I hope. I need to announce my product for hardline tubing and start selling them.

If you were to do it again would you still build the braces out just put the gas struts in?

Absolutely. They also stiffened up the hood. These hoods are surprisingly weak for how heavy they are. I’d build them differently if given the chance (a big more time into making them a little more elegant), but I’d absolutely still use them.
