It’s funny that most if not all of the characters on Woolie’s list were also chosen by Max when he looked through them. Fighting games definitely have a “type”
Some designs are just better to start when it comes to adapting from 3d over the head view, to a 2d plane style game. Also some character designs are just straight up better for fighting games
So I've been seeing a lot of folks reacting to the Riot Direct implementation calling it "server based." To clarify: What Project L will be using is still fundamentally peer-to-peer (p2p). The implication of the graphic shown is that generally in p2p networking schemes your and your opponent's connections are being routed through network infrastructure owned by your ISP, so the "direct line" to your opponent that we normally think of for p2p is actually a bunch of segmented hops between nodes on the way from one player to the other. By utilizing their own networking infrastructure and dedicated nodes meant solely for delivering packets from their games, Project L would aim to be making this path less segmented. With this the ping should be drastically reduced and this is what would allow them to actually know who is/is not connected to their nodes, therefore allowing them to in theory actually tell who rage quit. All this said, I am curious what the implications are for playing other regions. Riot's current track record is that the games are region-locked, and I don't see the Riot Direct infrastructure allowing cross-region play.
Region locking a fighting game would be pretty dumb. As big as this game will (probably) be, it's still a fighting game. Part of a niche genre. It will blow up at launch, then the fanbase will eventually reach a plateau where reagion locking would be VERY detrimental to the playerbase.
@@rcgama9594 I totally agree. I’m really hoping Riot makes Project L cross region - and cross-platform; in the background you can see the cabs have what looks the Playstation home screen pulled up.
I hope the server can be change by the player, just like Valorant where player can change their server based on where he stay. For example, like from California change to New York with the cost of your ping change.
I would think the Cannon brothers of all people understand how important framrate is fighting games. Imagine if they make the first true 120FPS FG? I imagine it'll be 60 though
It's refreshing for them to be frank with us on their plans for the game. Saying "easy to pick up and hard to master" was so much better than all the flowerly words that cause misunderstandings
As someone who put two years into Rising Thunder even post cancel, let me say I know Talos’s moveset like I know my grandmas cooking, Darius’s moveset is JUST Talos. This is STRAIGHT UP Rising Thunder
Yeah that was weird, especially funny when Max had to pause the video and explain to his chat what a vertical slice is. You'd think Woolie would already know that.
IIRC the frame rate is low because the footage was exported at like 24fps, the television standard. IIRC this footage was like right after the end of Arcane or something like that.
I swear there’s only 2 things I want from this: 1. Shyvana should have a literal Dragon Install and 2. Kindred….. But Lamb is a Puppet fighter with arrows and dodges to keep away from her opponents while Wolf is the proverbial puppet that has its own recharging mini-healthbar.
Despite being a complete stranger to the fighting game community and barely recognizing any of the fighting game terms they drop on this video, seeing people like Woolie, Reggie and Max react to this game and show interest in it's potential gives me a lot of hope for this game as well, if this game can bring in pros like them who know next to nothing about league AND people who are just here for the characters they already know and love, then we truly have something special here, hope this gets a lot of support from the devs for quite some time.
Game had a lot of potential, looks really promising! I have little to no knowledge of League but I'm sure there'll be some cool characters in this. Not to beat a dead horse but I don't get Woolie complaining about frame rate so much for a game that has no release date or platforms, when the devs straight-up said it was a vertical slice. He's literally the only person I've seen griping about that.
Yeah, I understand preferring 60fps but the Cannons made it clear this is a WIP with a distant release date. Videogames in development have ass framerates until late in the process. I thought he'd understand it more than most given his background.
Well he brought up a point that it "could" have something to do with how they are implementing rollback - IE lower frames, you have less actual frames lost since it's more time between frames. I think it's more an encoding thing, but interesting idea
Woolie you are not seeing this game until 2023 at the earliest. I am not sure why you'd think that whatever framerate issue you have would be the same.
Illoai mechanics would transfer into a badass character. She does the soul pull attack and gets to just training dummy your soul unless you get in her face and actually fight her and if you don't she can then use the tentacles to swipe at you cross stage from behind and push you towards her for combo or some shit.
I wasnt nearly as hype until he mentioned Illaoi as a possible character. She has one of my favorite audio kits in the game. The sound of them tentacles slapping around is so satisfying. Also saying Nagakaboros is also very satisfying.
Woolie really goin in on this proof of concept and its frame rate. I may have never developed a game before but this seems like a silly complaint at this moment in time. They're just trying to show you they have a game that exists and they are working on it. It's not supposed to be completely polished and pristine just yet
They're going to sell: - All the costumes the characters have in League proper, adapted to the fighting game - Background Music - Stages - Characters - Potentially campaign/story areas that provide benefits for LoL and other RIot games Look at how DOA5 and KI exploded when they went Free to Play. And those are minor properties compared to League. This motherfucker is going to be huge.
@@RicochetForce Agree with everything, have to add an extra detail to the characters though. It would most likely be available to buy with ingame currency or cash Like all of their games, if youre patient, you can just unlock everything (except cosmetics) for free. If you don't want to grind for things, cash is an option. Honestly, I kinda like this way of doing things. edit: fixed autocorrect.
The genre is healthy as hell. Strive this year, SNK XiV next year, SFVI potentially next year, DNF Duel on the way, Metal Revolution on the way, League Fighter, etc...
Reminder that Riot is still under investigation for abuse just like Activision. Its wild how quick everyone forgets when they're making cool looking products. Whether you like the games or not that shouldn't be forgotten.
If Azir is in the game, I hope he has a super where he denies emancipation and it drops Xerath to 15% health, gives him infinite meter, and switches him from ally to a third opponent for them to tag to. For not at all lore reasons naturally.
If I were to guess on the monetization plan for this game, based on all of Riot's previous stuff, I would guess it'll be free to play, with maybe half of the roster unlocked, the other half can either be bought or payed for with in game currency you get for playing over time (you'll probably also be able to use that currency for player icons etc), and although it's uncommon for a fighting game I bet costumes are paid but more complex than the typical recolors, like some actual model changes
@@AnhLe-dk3dg and that method keeps people playing too. You just need a varied starting roster that's free with cool characters that appeal to a variety of people, and go from there
I feel that a quote that i saw in a Koefficient stream where he reacted to this trailer helps summorize why there's so many people hyped for this game: *"Everything about League is great, except for the game itself."* The characters have cool designs, their abilities are interesting and they all stand out from each other, the only issue is that the moba that started it all is (most of the time) stress inducing. But, literaly any media that's able to use all of the before mentioned successufuly is gonna be great (the examples being *Arcane, Legends of Runetera* and most of the animation that Riot releases to promote a new character and/or skin).
Woolie has a good opening cast for a roster, but i'd also like to add Gangplank and Poppy to the list because Poppy is the trope of small character huge weapon (and i love her but i swear i'm not biased). Gangplank is solely melee but has a ranged ability so he could have a poke while also implementing his barrels as a cool mechanic to let him zone and do some slight traps as well. Like he could put a barrel down, cross over in a combo to knock you toward the barrel and do a specific special that makes his shot aim for a barrel and he could combo them for potential huge AoE screen damage. Plus he is voiced by Matt Mercer and I am always down for more Pirate Matt Mercer. (and i love him but I am totally not biased.)
Assuming the frame rate is going to be bad based on a demo means all those games we've seen in any tech demo would have also had bad frame rates when they came out. I think the frame rate is much more likely due to a lack of optimization because this game is super not even close to done. They just want to show off the system changes.
about tournaments. yes there will be familiar faces, but dude, there is some mechanical beasts in league. If this game makes it, there will be new faces in the fgc for sure.
Free to play recently CONFIRMED! (confirmed a few weeks ago, I'm binging through reactions rn, read update VIDEO on Project L, the Blog Post is more about how they approach creating a champion, in this case Illaoi)
Everything Riot does that involves with Online Gaming, are all free everything, to include the characters are technically free too. It is really easy to get points to unlock a character too.
I have an alternative take on the frame rate. Is it possible that they're doing the same thing Ark System Works does: treating each frame as an individual sprite state, thus making combos easier to visually comprehend? If that's what they're going for, they're probably intentionally keeping the framerate low so that jiggle bones (capes, hair, etc) don't look out of place next to the keyframe-animated models.
It's wild, Riot is the only company that could possibly make Racist Netcode work and be almost as good as the usual P2P with their infrastructure. I'm hyped for it being 2v2, I'm usually not a big fan of 3v3 because of how quickly each character tends to die, it's really annoying (often in touch touch after a really long combo with no Burst mechanic). I kinda hope characters have more than just variations of the same two specials, but it's probably fine if they don't. They have only shown the time bomb and the rewind, but each of them has multiple applications.
welll Woolie, now you gotta do a dream rooster out of the few hundreds of League characters, go throug them all one by one. A short 5 hours video, I'm sure
yeah but people think like oh lotr created orc elf and dwarf and did not exist before at all same as tracer and ekko they still say ekko is copying tracer while watching the champion spotlight from 2016
a lot of it was in the shadows and worked on for a long time, arcane and the card game were in the works for a really long time< so in reality it took about 5 years since the release, which would be 2014-15, the exact peak of league's popularity
Woolie, you say "for phones" as if it's a negative thing. League of Legends WILD RIFT is just a mobile version of League of Legends that not only runs better, but is even more visually intense because it has better UI, menus, and animations. Pat mentioned this to you a couple months back because he was surprised how much more he wanted to play it... if it was on console like Pokemon UNITE
Woolie, it's just rollback with dedicated servers. Strive and MK has it. VF has dedicated servers too, but it's delay based. Granted there might be better hardware on their end. But uh yeah. Servers good.
In all fairness, usually polish gets added LATE in development. It's also harder to optimize a game once half the engine is built since you're more likely to need a code overhaul or to redo sn entire texturing process. If the game really is in an alpha state, it should be a little concerning that the game is already running slow.
@@luan.galaxy Yeah. Hence I said alpha state. Technically, it's an early beta build at this point according to programming standards, but companies have ruined the distinction between a beta and a release candidate by calling the latter a "public beta". The point is, if they're already showing gameplay with art assets in it, then the engine is mostly built at this point, and even if it is not, the game shouldn't be seeing sizeable slowdown at this point. Problems tend to show up later in a game's development, not earlier. So, the earlier this build is, the more concerning it should be that it's not running at a smooth framerate.
I presume you'll need to unlock the characters first before playing them. They do it with Valorant and League of Legends. They could also do a weekly rotation of the free characters for players to try them out first before deciding to buy them.
Just going to clarify things. All of riot's games are f2p so I'm 99.9% sure project L will also be f2p. the games that are not f2p that are coming out are "Riot Forge" games which is actually the name of their "publishing branch" (not sure if that's the correct term). it's more like indie studios partnering with riot to be able to use the IP in the games that they develop.
the only thing that scares me is that riot's games are usually region locked, I'm from brazil and can only play with brazilian players in league or valorant, if this is the same for project L then it might be a huge dealbreaker
Out of curiosity since I'm not really familiar with League players, has any notorious League player shown interest or their analysis on the gameplay? Because most of the videos I seen are from FGC people, but I'm also not familiar with League players to look for their reactions, I'm genuinly curious.
this ll 100% have the same core of riot games, being free with comsetics you can whale on that give you 0 advantages besides looks. also the first few sec is slowed down to show in detail what you can do i believe.
Well Lordknight said tht he thought Ahri might be his kinda gal and he plays millia lol. Cant wait and thank god a game tht promises not to just be "beat the good players" Arcys tactic
It'll run at 60, 100%, Plus it'll be F2P. Any game developed by Riot themselves is F2P. Games made through Riot Forge, their 3rd party games, cost money, Ala Ruined King.
Riot did release “the ruined king” and “hextech mayhem” which cost money to purchase, so there is precedent of riot releasing non free games, we’ll see
Can't wait to test this out. Never was into the game of league but the characters and the worlds was what got me into but I do like fighting games and it might be my chance to get into it.
@@WoolieVersus I mean yes, that is technically true but most mobile gamers don't just carry around controllers to use on the fly. The entire point of phone games is to be easy and convenient to play.
It's actually pretty simple to solve the rage quit problem, at least in theory. All you need to do is to notify the server which player's connection was forcibly terminated. I'm no industry pro by any means but I think that if it were a priority it would have been fixed by now.
As much as love parts about it, I personally don’t feel comfortable in supporting Riot in any way. I ask people, especially those who rightfully shit talked Blizzard, to take at least a moment to think about if you wanna support Riot, with the knowledge of who is getting that money.
@@leithaziz2716 They’ve had several accusations about sexual harassment and assault over the years, some in great detail. And currently are in at least 3 lawsuits and investigations on the matter
It's a lot easier for the average person to denounce a video game company that's been shitting the bed with all their recent games essentially to one that's showing a lot of promise and company.
That one was a Riot Forge game, made by another studio for Riot. Those games wont be f2p most likely. But Project L is being worked on by Riot itself (or Radiant that was actually acquired by Riot) so it being f2p is quite likely.
Ruined King is a single player experience unlike all the other games which are online. You can't make a 20 hour single player f2p game. You should expect Project L to follow the formula of all their other online games.
I don't think this game is gonna be the "revolution" people are looking for it to be. I don't think it'll be free to play mostly because skins are actually very hard to do in fighting games and not have them look like shit *COUGH COUGH* Street Fighter 5 *COUGH COUGH*, and besides costumes there's no other cosmetic options like gun skins or whatever to add it. The game will probably be fine and definitely be successful initially, but I don't think having the Riot IP means the game is automatically have hugely bigger player retention. I mean, MvCI had rollback and the biggest IPs on the planet and it got fucking trounced, so I feel people have to temper their expectations with Project L in a big way
@@luan.galaxy It doesn’t matter how big it is if none of them stick with the game lol. They still have to get people who have never played a fighting game to be interested for more than a month, especially if it’s gonna be free to play. It being league only attracts the people who care about league lore, not people who enjoy playing League of Legends
im honestly surprised they're even looking to make a fighting game. If their sole objective is money, well...fighting games aren't exactly the most profitable games on the market right now. Just the simple hope that the game was probably pitched and is being developed by passionate people is what makes me hyped up about it. I've been a casual league and fighting game player for years so this was a real treat to find out for me.
This was Riot not just dropping the mic on the rest of the fighting game development space, it was then firing microphones directly into their faces. If this is even HALF successful we're going to see a strong adoption of a lot of this. Though I also expect a lot of the Japanese developers won't adopt any of it (see: Bandai-Namco).
