I agree with Colin Bolton. I would think that the steel surface was below the 'dew point'. Seek the paint manufacturers advice on what atmospheric conditions (temperature and humidity} are best in which to apply whichever paint you are using, and try to achieve that. You may need a heater or de-humidifier (or both!) Keep the compartment well ventilated if you can as even your breath as you exhale can create a lot of moisture in the compartment. By the way, always use a dust mask when grinding or sanding, even in the open air outside the boat. Kind regards, Chris

thank you chris. I do believe now that it was probably the dew point setting in too early in the curing process. well hey I learned something new . thanks for your comment

A great improvement to the roof. I think too that the paint in the cabin was put on in too cold and damp conditions. Bring the boat to Spain, no cold problems here, no rain either!

Looking good. I know that you did a lot of research in the rust converter and paint. so I don't think it is your fault, so you should contact the manufacture, and see what went wrong. Thay may replace it free 😎💚💙👍👍🍺🍺🍻

Possibly to steel surface was below the dew point, meaning water condenses on the surface (this is caused by a combination of low temperature & high humidity). It's difficult to reduce the humidity on a boat in the winter, and if you try to heat up the air to lower the humidity, but tis temperature needs to be maintained throughout the dry period (probably 6-8 hours depending on the type of paint you are using. I work with aerospace coatings, typically manufacturers quote drying times at 23 deg C. We use a rule of thumb that say's for every 5 deg C you drop below 23, the drying time will double. So if the drying time is 8 hours @ 23 deg C, it will be around 16 hours @ 18 deg C, and 32 hours at 13 deg C. The other factor is air flow. If you paint towards the end of the day and then shut the boat up before you leave it, it will trap solvent (and if you use water based products it will be worse). My advice would be to wait until the air temperature is at least 15 deg C, and apply the paint at the start of the day, to give the maximum time for it to "flash-off". Under these conditions 2 hours should be okay, the paint will not have cured but the solvent should have left the paint film, which means you can shut up the cabin & leave it further cure.

thank you very much for your in-depth view on the situation. I fully agree with you and believe that this is indeed what caused the problem. strange though that some bits did stick well, and others didn't....

@@BoatProjectY I've worked with paint for over 48 years, first as a development chemist and for the last 32 years as technical manager. The one thing I can say with confidence is that adhesion failures frequently are patchy over large surfaces. Sometimes this is due to poor preparation and cleaning (especially in inaccessible areas), equally it may be down to small environmental differences (if you have a small hole in the cabin you may have better ventilation in this area, or it may be worse because any heat you have generated will leak quicker from this area). Another factor that you may not have considered is film thickness. Paints are designed to work at specific film thicknesses, in my limited experience with the paints I have used on my boat, they are usually quite forgiving (50-100 microns per coat). Excessively high films, particularly with single pack paints, will slow down the drying as they need to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere to dry. I expect that your areas of failure may be down to a combination of all of these points. My advice to customers in a similar situation is to go back to basics and follow the data sheets for the paints meticulously. Once you are having success you can try to make small changes to suit your specific application. If you make the changes one at a time and you then get a failure, you can go back to your previous method and if it works you know the cause of failure. In temperatures below about 15 deg C, I would recommend that you monitor the temperature & relative humidity, especially if there is a large difference . You can get a digital thermometer/hygrometer online for 30-40 Euro's which will also record min/max temp & RH, so you know how low they drop over night. At this time of year you may find some large differences! Good luck with the rest of the refit and keep posting the video's, I enjoy the way you present them.

the topcoat is not needed for this underlaying structure I will add isolation to it later, but wanted to protect it for rust. but I guess you're right. I should have sanded it first.

When you painted did you use etching primer first and then paint or just paint directly on the metal after treating it with acid?? I would definitely suggest a etching primer that will grab ahold of the metal and then apply paint..

hi ben, I've done this before with great result on another parts of the boat. but as some people suggest here , probably the dew point set in too early in the curing process. well hey I learned something now today...

I does look like you did not get a key on the steel prior to painting inside. if the paint is good, but peeling off in sheets, its almost certainly the surface. If the steel got colder than the -5c overnight before the paint cured that could also be an issue. Just check to see how long it takes to cure at such low temperatures, but its almost certainly the prep. Oh and it always needs to be dry unless its a paint you can use on wet material.

I can not agree with you more. I think the dew point set in soon after we finished. stupid, error on my side, lots of extra work but I hope I learned something from it. thanks for your comment
