Miracles are signs and wonders that reveal God’s supernatural glory to our senses.
We have this ability to observe and draw conclusions about the way things are or the laws that govern the natural world and science is our crowning achievement for making and interpreting these observations.
When we define a natural law, by something like science, what we’re actually saying is, this is what always happens under certain circumstances. So when we define something like a law of gravity, we’re saying, this is how two objects with mass behave in proximity to each other.
A miracle is what happens when something occurs in a manner that doesn’t conform to those laws - that is, it doesn’t happen the way we always observe it… and since it doesn’t, it is, in the eyes of science, an anomaly and therefore, unexplained by science. If science could explain it, it wouldn’t be a miracle.
So asking for scientific evidence of a miracle is asking for a contradiction. Some people look at that and say, well then miracles are impossible because things always behave according to the laws of nature.
Well, the audacity of that statement is staggering, and it reveals, ironically, a very unscientific way of looking at the world. Scientific inquiry has always been motivated by a desire to reach for the unknown. But if you begin by defining what is or isn’t possible based on your existing, limited range of knowledge, then you’d never bother trying to discover anything.
You could say that a miracle is, by definition, something that we don’t understand. It’s evidence that the person who caused the miracle, like Jesus, has an ability or a knowledge that exceeds human understanding.
And this creates a problem for people who say that there needs to be proof before they will believe in a miraculous claim because a proof is, by definition, something that we do understand. If the evidence that you’re trying to provide as a proof to someone exceeds that someone’s ability to understand it, then you haven’t proven it to them, you’ve only told them something that is true and they can either choose to trust you or not… on faith.
Like, when my 3 year old daughter asked me why there were bubbles in her soda water, my explanation about how carbon dioxide can be dissolved in a liquid by adding pressure to it wasn’t an instance of me having proven it to her because it didn’t make any sense to her.
If a proof is, by definition, something that you are able to understand and a miracle, is by definition something that you are not able to understand, then to ask for proof of a miracle is to ask for someone to make you understand something that you can’t understand. In other words, it’s a logical contradiction.
To insist that proof of God conform to a self contradictory criteria is a pretty good way of staying stuck in your own feedback loop and it demonstrates an unwillingness to actually be open to the only kind of evidence that can be provided.
In other words, don’t ask for evidence under some pretense that you’d actually accept it when it’s presented and then retreat into a logical fallacy as a defense against the evidence.
If you can accept that miracles might be possible, that still doesn’t prove that they occur. If you’ve never seen one, just as you’ve never seen a flying orangutan, that could reinforce the belief that they don’t occur.
But what if there are thousands of documented cases of people having witnessed a miracle. That’s pretty powerful evidence and again, unless you're content with contradictions, you need to resist the temptation to retreat back into the insistence on proof. Eye witness accounts are the only possible kind of proof that can be offered.
I can provide a lot of examples of credible miracles, but I’ll stick with the process by which Catholic saints are declared. You may or may not know this, but in order to be declared a saint, in the Catholic Church, there needs to be evidence that miracles can be attributed to the person in question.
Now, it’s easy to dismiss this process, but if you look into how it’s scrutinized and investigated by the Church, you’ll discover that they take a very skeptical approach as in, they look for every possible natural explanation for the supposed miracle first, even consulting scientists and experts and if no natural explanation can be offered, then they start to favor a miraculous explanation.
With an understanding of this open and transparent process, we should begin to get a sense of the scope of how many well documented miracles there are out there and that’s a pretty commanding rebuke of the claim that there is no evidence for God or miracles.

Recently I read St Bonaventura's biography of St Francis. Franciscus was surrounded by wonders, a man gifted with all sorts of paranormal qualities. There's one image in particular that keeps pondering my mind. At a certain moment St Francis retires with some monks to the woods to fast and pray. One night the monks see St Francis hovering a few feet about the ground, his arms wide outstretched, his body radiates a glowing light. Perfect image for a great painting.

I'm Catholic and I'm into religious miracles. A miracle doesn't have to be just connected to something divine or supernatural, but it can also be tied to everyday things. For example, someone getting up in the morning can be a miracle, or someone coming home from work can be considered a miracle. But my overall opinion on religious miracles is that they can be signs from God or can be supernatural. However, I do acknowledge coincidence and logical explanations. Also, even if we don't know what is causing a miracle now, doesn't really mean that science won't discover an answer in the future. This is because something that was considered a miracle back in either ancient or medieval times can be explained today by modern science. So the truth is, we just don't know. It is a mystery. However, who knows, I do believe in God and I am open to his work and signs. Anything is possible.

There are miracles that we see in our very own eyes that we cannot begin to understand, why it is happening. And what is the purpose of it. I love the miracles of healing, that restore man to health, because often that person will be converted, and will then begin to serve in the Kingdom of God, thus others benefits it greatly and heaven is cheering!... Thank you Brian for making me realize one very important thing but what you said near the end of this video. I realized that even among many who do believe in miracles, when a saint or someone who is about to be declared a saint performs a miracle, all the protestants stop believing in miracles. I mean, think about it guys, all the protestants refuse to believe in the intercession of the saints and that saints in heaven do love us and care for us and help us, in fact as i just said, they do not believe in miracles when they are performed through their intercession. Is it not amazing?

I don't know many atheists who say "there is no evidence for god." I, and those I know, say that we have not seen any evidence for god. More fundamental than this, we need to have a coherent definition of what god is, before we can begin to evaluate evidence for a god.
@tryforthesky2224
@tryforthesky2224 5 лет назад
Coherent definition of God: "YHWH; I Am Who I Am; the non-contingent source of contingent existence; Actus Purus; the unmoved mover; the necessary being." How's that? Re: need for evidence... genuinely, I wonder if you might consider whether God is gently trying to grow you in your trust for other people, that you may look into the evidence others claim to have seen and experienced, and consider the testimony of those witnesses' subsequent actions? E.g. on a human level, think of the human disciples of Christ who claimed they firsthand witnessed the resurrection of Christ after his public execution: claimed that they saw evidence sufficient for themselves, including touching him with their hands, seeing him with their eyes, listening to him speak with their ears, sharing food with him. For a moment, suspend disbelief and imagine being one of them, and really experiencing really, physically touching the risen Christ -- sticking your finger into the wound in his side, like Thomas did. Then consider that these witnesses, who claimed that was literally their experience, were tested: the Romans subjected them to horrific tortures and deaths for their claims, and these witnesses chose to insist that they really did experience this evidence firsthand, rather than escape suffering (and they *were* offered escape routes!) by denying their accounts of being firsthand witnesses of the miracle of the resurrection. Consider for a moment how deeply we would have to DIStrust someone, to see their willingness to die rather than recant their story of directly experiencing the miracle of the resurrection firsthand, and think to ourselves, "Nope, dude's probably lying. And just... really hates truth, or loves torture, or something." The truth is, the testimony of firsthand witnesses is its own kind of real evidence, available to our own senses: especially considering the extensive suffering the witnesses were willing to suffer on account of their story, which no sane human would suffer for a known lie (and they would have known it, since they were talking about DIRECT evidence they personally experienced, at close range and prolonged duration, not believing something compelling they heard second- or third-hand; and we have no reason to think them insane).

"So I'd like to invite you to consider the rest of what I have to say without pre-judging what is or isn't possible." I'm all in favour of this approach. "We could say a miracle is, by definition, something that we don't understand" I can accept that if that's how you want to define it. "It's evidence that the person who caused it …." Or, if we aren't pre-judging it, it may instead be evidence of some natural process we don't know about or don't understand. This, I think, is what people mean when they tell you that there's no evidence of miracles. It's not that they've ruled them out. Rather it's that they are open to alternatives that you are ruling out or judging unlikely. That's the sort of judgement that seems audacious to me. It seems to suggest a knowledge of the limitations of the natural world that no scientist I've ever heard comes close to claiming. Your own appeal to not pre-judging anything bears repeating. Take the examples you offer of miracles considered by the Catholic church. I would to put small wager on them not being done blind. This, amongst other things, would probably be my first desire if I were looking for serious evidence of miracles. Imagine the controls being somewhat tighter :- Case A: The subject's medical condition changed inexplicably. We have medical evidence from experts that testify to there being no natural explanation for this change. We have multiple accounts of prayers being offered for the subject. etc. Any other evidence you want … so long as its only evidence pertaining to the event and not specific to the Catholic church or its beliefs. More transparent. Less open to bias or preconceived beliefs. The sort of controls that encourage confidence in all manner of other serious trials, studies and research. Good, if not essential. practice in other fields. Can you judge whether Case A is a miracle or not?

The universal law of attraction applies here so if you believe in miracles them that will be true for you and you will notice them. Conversely if you don't you won't attribute anything to miracles and there is nothing that you can do to persuade anyone otherwise. This may sound arrogant but I'm not claiming it only applies to me. I consider my own existence to be a miracle. Not because of anything that could be credited to me but "just" the mere fact that I am rather than I am not. Science might explain how the particles of my body came together but that doesn't begin to explain my existence as a being instead of an object. That may not count for science but it certainly counts for me.
@stealthfox2228

I think when I ask for "Proof of a miracle" I'm not asking to understand it I'm asking for proof as to it's existence. For example, a video of a broken bone knitting itself together in a matter of minutes. I'm not asking to understand the miracle, I'm asking to understand if it happened at all.

@dodopod
@dodopod 5 лет назад
@@thedisintegrador It couldn't be said from the other point of view. The first sentence becomes "The disbelievers in miracles deny them (rightly or wrongly) because they have evidence against them." This is false. Miracles are, by definition, both rare and unpredictable. Because of this, it's impossible to have any significant evidence that they don't happen, unless you can observe and analyze everything that happens, in the entire world. The second sentence becomes "The believers in miracles accept them (rightly or wrongly) because they have a doctrine supporting them." As long as we're talking about Christians who believe in miracles, this is true. But it isn't necessary to fall back on dogma -- there are thousands of eyewitness accounts of miracles, many of which are quite credible. Also, you said, "People don't believe in miracles because they never had direct or indirect experiences with them." Often, this is true, but not always. There's an anecdote from C.S. Lewis, I think it was in his book *Miracles*, where he mentions that he only ever met one person who claimed to have seen a ghost. That person was a materialist before, and a materialist after. Even though they were, at least apparently, a witness to something supernatural, they couldn't accept it as real. Why? Because it didn't fit into their worldview. I imagine that this is a general rule of human psychology. If an average Christian ran into an avatar of Vishnu, they wouldn't go and convert to Hinduism. They would convince themself that it was only a delusional human being, or maybe even a demon. But there's no way it could be a god.

Neil, there is plenty of evidence to the contrary on your programming theory. You are right in Christians' insistence on truth. For the last 2,000 years many have been killed simply because they would not deny the truth. The rest have been mocked, discriminated against, and even imprisoned for their faith. We are either insane (or at least deeply confused) *or* we know something so important that we will not bend and wish to share the reason for our joy with others for their benefit.

Did you ever think through the inherent contradiction between the second law of thermodynamics (all things tend to move from order to disorder) and the theory of evolution, where organisms can through natural selection, move from the simplest forms to more complex forms? Without the intervention of a "higher power", it is simply impossible for these two general observations to coexist in the same system (the universe). In my mind, the apparent generalized truth that both of these laws are at play in the observable universe constitute absolutely irrefutable evidence that there is a Creator. BTW - miracles happen every day, all around us, and all we need to do is to allow the grace of faith to open our eyes to see them. And one of the most astounding miracles that happens right before our eyes is that Jesus, the Creator through whom everything is made and sustained, chooses to fully manifest His entire self into the form of a piece of bread and a chalice of wine. I call this the ultimate example of "hiding in plain sight"! This is so astounding that it boggles my mind that we don't all fall on our face every time we encounter Him in this most sublime of heavenly feasts!
@Jo_Kuiper
@Jo_Kuiper 3 года назад
This second law is for when there isn't new energy added to it, has nothing to do with living structures/beings that get new energy every day. Neither is evolution like a ladder, not a goal to get better. Also doesn't that bread change into flesh or the wine into blood, it's still just bread and wine.
@a.i.l1074
@a.i.l1074 2 года назад
There's overlap in the common language, but not in the actual definitions. A human is called more complex than bacteria because of our internal workings, an energy system is called more complex because there's more types of energy. Every time a chemical reaction happens inside your gut, we say some energy is "lost", and the system becomes simpler/more chaotic, but these reactions turn simple bread into complex human beings!

I have a couple questions 1. at 3:30 you say that a miracle is something that doesn't conform to natural laws, my question is; perhaps it is only perceived as a miracle because it doesn't conform to the KNOWN natural laws, that in fact there are natural laws that we have yet to discover that would explain miraculous phenomena? 2. at 6:26 you make the argument that because there are thousands of people who claim to have experienced miracles therefore it's proof of miracles, but by that same logic we have been visited by aliens from outer space on a number of occasions because there are thousands of people who claim to have seen UFO's.

This was made 3 years ago, but I'm only finding this page now, so...sorry. But...no. I didn't need to understand how the miracle occurred per say for me to believe it. What I didn't have was an experience such as the disciples and doubting Thomas received. I didn't experience someone in my life who was Catholic who was missing a limb suddenly growing back a limb. I didn't experience a blind person praying and suddenly being able to see in that moment of prayer. The list could go on. It isn't that I must understand the mechanism, though that would be appreciated. It's that miracles tend to be a story told rather than a story experienced. For me, anyway.

'Miracles are one of those things that sit right at the divide between believers and skeptics.' Can't really say I disagree with this statement, however that's usually because the skeptics aren't willing to take the believers at their word. It doesn't matter what the faithful *think* happened, only whether or not they can provide evidence *that* it happened. The problem you run into here is that miracles, by their very nature, are exceptions to the rules of the natural world. They are events which defy our current understanding. Now, this can mean that we just don't understand what's going on. The phrase "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" comes to mind here. And while we could actually take a look at these miracles and see if it's just an aspect of the natural world we didn't understand, the issue is that a decent number of these 'miracles' only exist within religious scripture. At that point, our only options are to accept your word that these things happened, or reject them for being unable to meet the standards of evidence which most skeptics use. And it may upset you to hear this, but your *word* is not sufficient enough to count as evidence. You also have the problem that most of these claims about 'miracles' appear to have been made by third and fourth-hand sources rather than people who were actually there at the time.

@@theobserver3753 So, having actually looked this up, I can safely say that this literally does nothing to prove or disprove miracles. You're recommending I visit the location, which is not what I'm asking for. I'm asking for actual evidence which can be tested to verify that such an event actually happened. This is literally a story told by a group of monks, which supposedly occurred during the 8th century. Whatever 'evidence' they have on display could have easily been fabricated to reinforce the story, unless they have a verifiable chain of custody or other form of documentation which verifies that the 'evidence' is genuine and not a recent forgery. Once again; your *word* is not enough.

Another thought: Eye witness testimony is an empirically unreliable thing. It would be good for research methodologists to put the Catholic testimonies of miracles under peer review, to see how the stories can be further interrogated. Even supposing the existence of magical healing, how would one know the difference between the influence of an all powerful god, versus a finite but still incomprehensibly powerful entity?

Ok, good sir, I will show you ONE instance of someone growing back an [amputated limb]. No need to wait any more, with the power of Google I have found this: The Miracle of Calanda, 1640: Miguel Pellicar, a 20-year old farmer had a workplace accident that left his right leg broken and later very gangrenous. It was amputated by two master surgeons in Zaragoza who later testified in his miracle investigation. The amputated limb was buried as was tradition. For several years he lived as a beggar with a wooden leg and crutches. One night when a soldier had stayed at his house, his mother came in to see him sleeping... and with two feet. He was later examined by two other surgeons and later by many others who would have witnessed him to be an amputee from his begging years. Later examination determined it was the same leg with the same bruises and scars prior to the injury. Recall that the two surgeons who performed the amputation gave testimony under oath. Whether you agree that this is a miracle or not, whether you reject authenticity of testimony under oath, you asked for one, you got one.
