Today I go outdoors with my Hasselblad 501cm film camera and a roll of Portra 160 film. I start the day feeling uneasy and anxious, but things soon turn around and my mental health improves once I start engaging with the landscape. I encounter a heavy snow storm as I enjoy some landscape photography. I am forever being drawn to the smaller, more intimate scenes and images. This video demonstrates that not everything needs to be a big, epic view.

I’m a photographer who’s turning 15 in 3 months and has been shooting pictures since I got my first camera on my 13th birthday. But only recently did I realise how relaxing it is, and how it makes my life better in so many ways. It has helped me survive through lockdown definitely

For me, that sense of agitation is common in the early part of an outing and I know that it will eventually be relieved when nature reveals the shot to me. Then the right brain takes over the left, and the excitement overcomes the agitation. I really appreciate that you shared the struggle that we all go through and not make it look so easy. Thank you!

"I feel like I shouldn't be here." That statement hit home for me. We've all been cooped up so long that being out and about feels....weird. Like we're breaking the rules, acting like the bad kids. I'm thinking I need to be a bad kid more often to get out of this rut. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

I sympathise. Last summer I went out walking a lot, but the recent bad weather has kept me indoors and even though the weather was fine today, I made excuses and didn't go out for a walk. I think I'm going to have to reintroduce myself to the outdoors very gently, like returning a creature to the wild after it's been in captivity for too long.

Appreciate your emotional honesty. Being in lockdown makes me feel like I’m not accomplishing anything (Ontario, Canada). I get outside about 4 times a week to hike and that’s been a mental health boost. Love grasses in snow! And the mounds of snow on ice. Simple images that are peaceful. We have tons of snow here. I had a very long-winded speech to give about how so many of us are struggling with locking down, staying safe, and dealing with what seems at times to be a tenuous future -- at least for 2021. But, as you have again shown, perhaps all that's needed to be said is simply "Photography is therapeutic."

You actually are in a better place than you think when you're feeling that agitation, just by the fact that you caught yourself feeling it. Most just get caught up and taken for the ride. Take a deep breath, appreciate the moment around you, don't run from the feeling, accept it, and know that like all things "this too shall pass." And it does.

Having the freedom to be out in nature is fundamental to my well-being and being able to do that even if it's just a hobby is something that many around the world can't right now. Haha. Nope. Not just you. One of my favorite shots this year so far is exactly that; a few blades of grass popping out of the snow. And that sheep shot at the end...pure joy. Love that. And I think that's exactly why you were agitated to start - you didn't seem present. I use my woodland and landscape photography to help with my mental health but you showed how important it is to not put pressure on it being the complete solution, to slow down and just enjoy being out there. I did laugh at the end when you were photographing the sheep. At about the 15:45 -16:00 min mark as you were explaining your excitement about the sheep and if you watch in the back ground every sheep wandered off the screen and I though you were going to turn around and they would all be gone. The sheep photo looks like a pencil sketch. What a great scene!

Thank you Thomas for another great video and for sharing your experiences with lockdown and how you feel being outdoors. Hopes it motivates me to go out more too. The image of the wiggly sticks is my favorite.

Fantastic video Thomas, not just the photos but hearing your thoughts about how photography makes you feel - inspiring. Thanks.
