David, you should see the BEAMS swapped Corollas in south Africa. Soo much cleaner looking. 200 hp in N/a form in a light chassis ftw. Like you said, it's all about using what you got. You should do more videos on non supported commuters like this. Love it. The creativity here is great. Makes you think outside the box.
This Corolla is actually really popular amongst car enthusiasts in the Philippines. Most of their Corollas are packed with 4AGE's and are just utterly beautiful looking. It's like the Foxbody of the Philippines.
Jacob Unger did you import them? They’re 4wd right? I fucking love those things. My first car was a 93’ sedan but i can only imagine it would only get better as a wagon!
@@Vacated204 Neither of them were imported. Unfortunately, the ae92 model was the last awd models they sent here from Japan, but places such as Japan, and Pakistan, etc... got the awd models. The one I want to import is an ae101 hd which is diesel, Toyota Hilux rear differential and awd.
I'm looking for another 89 Corolla LE. Made the mistake of selling mine last year, dark grey with sunroof and all power options, tachometer, with the 4af engine. It even had chrome trim and factory mud flaps. It was in good shape with top engine rebuild, radiator, water pump, timing belt etc done at 120,000 miles. Exhaust rims and tires, paint job at 125,000. Sold it for $3000 with 136,000 miles. I purchased it in 2005 with 105,000 miles for $500. Can't help but wondering how much I could have done with it, especially looking at others like this one.
Tyler Wood They really do. I still have my dad's 93 corolla and it has 219k on the clock. Starts every time, gets you to where you wanna go and gets you home after.
Dude, my parents used to have a 1989 Corolla from my birth year that my parents bought from new. It was a sweet little car which I wish we still had, but my sister used it as her first car and ended up starving the engine of oil and seized the engine, or cracked the block... one of those. I wish we still had that baby, I would love to be driving it today!
Kasper Leinonen YES someone who gets it! Lightweight nimble cheap big engine bay lots of JDM engines to choose from, I have an AE101 with a 20v 4AGE that got Matt Farah's approval in his One Take
I like how the originality was kept throughout the interior. Every time you step inside it feels like a flash back to the past. It's a pretty unique daily not many have, or prefer to have. Well done!
This made my day! As a 90's Corolla owner myself. I have a 96' here. It was my first car and even though it's seen better days it has been and will continue being modified as I go. It's got a long history on the road. Mine has 245K miles on it and it's still going strong. Hopefully one day it will be completed how I want. Maybe it will get a chance to be reviewed too. Awesome video as always!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! YAS! My first car was a 1995 Toyota Corolla DX (AE102) and I've recently decided to resurrect the ideas that I once had for that car. I don't have that exact car anymore, but I can buy a 102 for cheap! I wanna kinda go this route. Wheels, springs, seats (used Recaro SR3), wheel (used Nardi Gara), shifter, audio, intake, header, exhaust, and be done with it. Why? Because I loved that car. It's just a grannymobile to everyone else, which makes it that much cooler. Thank you so much, David, for sharing this.
Great review David! I'm a huge AE92 fan, and it was really cool to finally see you in one. Only thing is that the 4A-FE motor in that car is actually a dual cam. It uses a "slave cam" system. The timing belt wraps itself around only the exhaust cam, and under the valve cover the exhaust cam drives the intake came via scissor gears
Bro i live in a country called bangladesh and the toyota corrolla is the only car thats available here so i seee dozens of these and im glad u finally reviewed one
506 Offroadin Jamaica has lots of JDM cars, especially Japan only models...but Corollas are most common, I recently saw someone with a Corolla FX with a K20 swap
my parents had a Lumina that was blue inside and out too! i mistook it for a race car when i was 6 because my only frame of reference for cars back then were Hot Wheels and my dad's '92 Ram Van.
506 Offroadin Lol well thats toyota for you and the best thing is from this 4af right to the 16v 4age everything is interchangeble because the blocks are all the same
I love this car. Seriously. Love the back ground, the story and how its put together. And it actually looks nice. I'm currently working on a 5th gen max (3.0 vq sounds better imo than the vq35 although the latter is obviously the better engine.) Got it for 800 bucks not running now has a few mods and sounds and drives great. Shout out to Kevin for this Corolla man I love it!
Hey David! Great review. Just so you know its not SOHC, its twin cam, it just has the timing belt around one camshaft and a gear on that one drives the second one. The 4AFEs were kinda weird like that.... I had one of these a few years back. Love the video been subbed since the sn95 days.
My parents bought an AE101 corolla new in 1995. Its done 23 rainy UK winters, took me & my sister to school, college, work and has never needed any work on the engine, gearbox or electrics. I love the corolla and when people say why the love for the corolla, I simply say that anyone can love a supra, skyline, mustang or Lamborghini, but it takes a real car enthusiast to see potential where others can't. Yotagang for life.
This thing' is really cool. I absolutely love early '90s boxy car designs and especially clean lowered ones. If they weren't so unsafe compared to modern cars you bet I'd be rocking one.
I’m shocked to see this. This is awesome because we still have our Toyota Carina 170 and it still runs till today. It belongs to my grandmother n it passed down n now I have it. This is awesome love what he did with it🔥👍🏽
T-Sport Corolla Compressor (2009). T-Sport with a supercharger. Had the worst gearbox I've ever driven, terrible handling and even worse power delivery (few flat spots).
Yeah, I don't know how the trans can be any worse than this ae92, corolla's have been using similar cable shifted, hydraulically actuated clutch, C-series trans since the 80's. That c60 trans in the t sport compressor isn't any different then the c60 in the celica or matrix of similar years (besides maybe gear ratios). They aren't the smoothest transmissions known to mankind and I agree that all toyota cable shifted transmissions leave a bit to be desired but they're definitely far from the worst. Toyota's mcpherson strut suspension has always been on the soft side from the factory, with a squishy, squat-y, lean-y, ride. For the average commuter this suspension is perfect, for a person looking for a sporty ride they never run on toyota's stock suspension. Toyota has always had problems with the supercharged upgrades, from the 1mz to the 2uz. They seem to always have a problem with the fueling and timing. I believe they try to make sure the setup stays emission compliant and they sacrifice power and power delivery. Toyota ecu's are known to block/override any piggyback fuel controller, which is why you should replace it with standalone engine management.
n0ti5 huh. That is very good stuff to know. If i want to add forced induction to 1.6 cvt e170 i've to get a standalone ecu like elite ecu. It's a must anyhow but the stock ecu eould be a hassle to deal with, right? I'm planning to supercharge mine with compatible trd supercharger and solve the suspension system with d2 coilovers amd keep the stock brakes with ceramic brake pads. I'm just not sure that the cvt will br happy with it. Or should i get a project car like a 240z (if i could find one in my country) or a celica. I'm asking for your recommendations if you may.
You said conquest and I instantly thought of the conquest (aka starion)... Damn, those cars are awesome... And Damn... Sometimes I hate being a car guy, just one word changes the direction my mind was going. Love the work the owner put in this car. But excuse me while I waste the rest of my night on craigslist looking for conquests / starions I can't find or afford...
I have the same car and it is freaking amazing. Same story as this dude. Was my mom's car and spent most of my childhood in it. Actually I never expected that I would fall in love with this car so much. Also, I started modding it and someday will look something like this.
OMG! I own a 1991 toyota corolla (New Zealand challenger edition) its a hatchback silver and blue skirts, my first car, I love cars and this has given me so many ideas of how to do the little things just to make it better looking and feel a bit nicer to sit in I've already started with a blue and black interior set up of all colors and watching this has given me inspiration. so thanks Kevin and thanks the dude in blue your content is awesome keep it up.
Reminds me of an '83 Pontiac Fiero I as first Carr that bought with own money. Was so low, lived up north where snowed.....not a good snow car. But had no power steering & every bump, swore I'd jump up or sideways an inch or two..... But was a fun car & ran great for having 200K on engine. Love this vid.....& would like a few more throwback cars like this. Cheers, A
That Fiero had 8 speakers......OEM. 2 each in headrest, 2 by windshield, & 1 in each door....& was a 2 seater, so, could really hear radio when on...lol
Aepek im 16 and i bought myself a 87 mr2 lol! I loved that car so damn much and i miss it I just sold it and bought a 2004 camry because i couldnt really afford or have time to get it how i wanted it so i figure this would be more smart at my age( 17 next month )
Miguel Ortiz sold my car years ago & still miss it & wish would have kept it, but yeah, didn't have time or money to do wanted to do with it either..... But man was that a fun little car😉
Adam edwards It was an '83 but was released in '84; so technically your are "right", 😉 I ended up with a '83 cuz bought off someone who worked for GM & he got it right off the line(1983-1988 was when were manufactured). But yeah, your correct, was....is I suppose considered '84 Fiero even though was built in '83.... When I got it, the rear driver's break line was held together with vise grips & electrical tape(and had no rotor either!)....didn't know at time cuz trusted the guy(family friend) & drove it 300 miles home like that. Found out when we're replacing breaks & tires etc....
I'm the same as him. My first car was a 1991 Corolla 4 door sedan (like his). Mine is white with red interior and it belonged to my mother. She bought it new on a dealer ship in '91 and I just love the car. I currently rebuilt the engine and she's running like new, still has the original interior seats. They aren't 86, but they are fun to drive and awesome.
Funny, on my way home from work I see a tan one damn near everyday and wondered... what a modded corolla would look like. This one is a perfect example; really nice and creative.
Im not much of a toyota guy but, if you swap any 4AGE in there it would move out pretty good, 16v or 20v would be cool but i like the sound of the 16v better
fin harms I mean people have made 300 NA HP on a stroked 4AGE before. I know someone has done 1000hp (somehow) on a turbo 4A. Plenty of people have gone 200+ mph with the 3RZ from the Tacoma and the 3SGTE. The 2AZ can make up to 900hp in boosted form too. Just cause Honda has more aftermarket doesn't mean you can't make some impressive hp figures on Toyota engines. Besides, you being a Honda guy shouldn't explain why you like the worse sounding 4AGE
Daniel Lott yea they can make good power... but not easy... but key word... stroked.. thats a built motor, and the 3sg is a great engine, not taking anything away from a good toyota but at the end of the day if simplicity and ease of parts both oem and aftermarket Honda takes the cake my man, no doubt about it, that being said the 200+ mph thing that all has to with gearing highly doubt a stock tranny will get you there
Joebet Bonifacio I'm on a gk5 got it in july14 2 weeks after first in u.s.was sold, you guys are the reason why I made that choice...hardly anyone bothers to mod them here in N.Y.
So awesome to see someone who also modified a 91 corolla. Thought i was the only one who did that. Back in the day everyone was into hondas and no one and i mean no one modified the toyota corolla. Desperately looked for a 4A-GE engine to swap but never had the money.
My family has 2 Toyota Allion, 1 Premio and a Toyota Axio. The have pretty much the same engine 1nz-fe. I have a dream to modify one of them and now this video just inspired me. Thanks David
My daily is a carbureted 89 AE92 and I can confirm the brakes are terrible lol. 4 wheel disc conversions are common on these and should be the next thing to look into before dude gets a turbo, just my opinion. Thanks for reviewing this as I never expected to see an AE92 on here and it gives me a few ideas for my own car. I also grew up in a red one similar as a kid. My parents had a wagon and then the red 90 sedan so I have a soft spot for that era of Toyota since my dad still has an 82 pickup with a built 22r and my mom dailies an 06 XRS lol. But great looking car, great review David!
Corona are 91 camry brakes works wid minor adjustment i have the 91 camry back disc on my ae91 are you could turn the car 5 studs with the hubs back an front
@@Spiritual_DriverAE101 yea cause i redrill the holes for the 4 hub but i wanna turn my next corolla 5 stud cause some rims i see only are 5 stud like the old benz rims etc to look different...so i gonna use back the camry hubs that are 5 stud
Most people when they say "that car can't be modded" they mean it doesn't have 4 million bolt ons. Most don't want to learn how to make your own parts. They just want as much bolt ons as the Supra or Skylines otherwise it's not enough.
Alex Strömberg unless it's your only car and you can't get another it's not really worth fabricating parts especially if it's not the car you see yourself keeping for a long time
Bolt ons are fun and easy. I've been wrenching and working on projects too long, I guess. Just bought a 17 Fiesta ST and it's very refreshing to just do mild bolt ons and not have to do crazy custom stuff sometimes. Maybe I'm just getting old or tired of extensive mods...
Loved the video, kinda made me feel like less of a weirdo modding my '14 Camry SE. I got a family, a car payment, don't need another payment as much as I would like, but im working with what I got! I wanna lower it, get rims, tint, new head and taillights, add a stereo etc.
Tec 2000 I think most of the problem with the car scene here has to do with the crazy high costs of road tax, insurance (especially for younger people but not exclusively), import tax and fuel all of which explain why the Corolla would be modified so often
Stance Culture Can confirm. Went to a drift even yesterday in my S14 and got some looks because apart from 3 E46s, 1 E36, 3 MX-5s and then there were 40+ IS200s.
I kind of did this with my G6, lowered it and cleaned up some things. Plus I like not having a car payment. It is fun on back roads because it handles better then I would have thought
My uncle had two Corollas, that gen, except it was an '88, and when that was totaled, the insurance replaced it with a '95 model. He drove from new, until the days before he passed away in 2010. Sadly, my aunt sold it, though I wanted to keep it, and replace the gas tank. 220,000 miles, and not a mechanical issue at all. That's a testament to good, quality craftsmanship.
Stefan Winter he isnt a toyota fan boy. Anyone who has been around cars a long time will tell you 2 things about toyotas. They always run forever and they always burn oil
Stefan Winter ehh not really. Most people who have fast hondas and stuff work on them thereselves and avoid dealerships. We get alot of stance fags causw you know they dont know what the fuck they are doing lol
I'm doing the same, minus the whole stance thing, with my mom's old 2000 Focus she bought new when I was a kid. She's pushing 250k right now and still runs like a champ. Still needs some work to get it where I want, but its gonna be sweet when it gets there.
My family have a toyota liteace van that been in our family since 1996...i was born in 1996 so the van is same age that i am... Surprisingly the van still runs great after some tweaks ,cleaning and oem part replacement from the junkyard... Still i have plans to put a turbo in the van... I'll try... Wish me luck... And dude love you video been watching them since the 240s....love from Malaysia
*cringe* the ae86 sold alongside the front wheel drive ae82. these ae91 corollas are popular in many countries where people take the time to do ae111 4age 20v swaps and proper brake maintenance/upgrades. the thumbnail got me but the car made me sad. :(
These are my favorite models... I rebuilt two of them for myself. They are really reliable cars.. thanks for shining some good light on this specific make.# corolla junkies
Hey David i loved your vid! My first view of anything on your channel and it was super enjoyable! Thanks for making this review Anywho as a huge toyota fan i just wanted to point out a couple small pieces of info that is slightly untrue. There was a fwd corolla before this one called the ae82, which was made immediately after the ae86. Its like a rear-ended camry, so its kinda really ugle, except for the hatchback, which looked like a Honda EF And the 4afe engine that this particular model has is in fact a 16 valve dual cam, but its driven by a single belt gear. The cams are close to eachother, the second cam is an opposing cam gear driven off of the first cam inside, and has a narrow profile like most formula 1 cars do but tuned for economy. But all in all packaged into a tight little engine head as you showed. Thanks for spreading the car culture love. Tdid!
I wouldn't do it , but I love it. All I would change is a battery relocation to clean up the bay a bit, but the stance build on a car like this is always cool imo.
My dad had the rarer version of this 92 Corolla called the LSX. Unfortunately got into a wreck when I was a kid due to a text-and-driver merging onto the highway. Only made in Canada and had leather seating, full Dolby speakers, cruise control, the same engine you would find in a DX Corolla AND best of this 1989 to 1992 gen....the tape player ;) !! Fantastic video overall!
my brother had a white 4 door 89 corolla as his first car back in 99 and he was one of a small few to mod his. he went all out with 17 tenzo R 7 spoke that were white. intrax lowering springs with KYB shocks and struts. full cat back exhaust from Japan as well as the lights from a filipino corolla. and finally a 4age 20v. nobody in Miami knew about that engine. i miss that little car, she was shipped to the dominican republic
Love that small anime on the windows 😂But tbh, it's really cool car. My dad had 1989 Civic, when he sold it I wanted it back and have it as my first car, so I see why he did it. Car looks good and is definitely standing out the crowd!
I have a soft spot for the Corolla's. I have a 2016 model which I lowered on nice wheels, but because of it's warranty, that's all. So I bought a 2001 Corolla wagon, which I've made low and wide with the stance and can do so much more. They go forever and people under-estimate them. The AE80 series was the first front drive model corolla. Please correct me, if I'm wrong. Such a great story behind this car. Keep them coming buddy.
And there we go. No car is an exception. Even Priuses (Prii?) get their fair amount of love. I mean, they get an unfair amount of hate, but some are loved regardless.
I have a 2001 Corolla that was the family car when I was a kid. It’s the car I learned how to drive manual in. I tinted the windows, upgraded the headlight bulbs, and added wood dash because I’m a sucker for wood dash. Best gas mileage I’ve ever gotten out of a car too.
I'm from Cape Town & I own the same car. We LOVE the Toyota AE92 over here, very reliable car. Mine is nearing 400k on the clock & it still looks & drives most beautiful.Definitely going to hand it over to my son someday.
