To follow up my previous video, I’ll show you a real life example of the effect of prop walk and prop wash to the boat movement when there is no steerage and in a tight space. Understanding the prop walk and prop wash specifically to your own boat is obviously very important in order to achieve precise boat maneuver in tight docking and undocking. Prop walk varies hugely in boats and can be used to your advantage. But sometimes, it just works against you like the following situation when I need to make a standing turn counter-clock wise in a fairway only about 1 and a quarter of the boat length with prop walk to the port side.

How lucky you are, to have a cooperative and helpful partner!

I have a right-hand prop and with slow speed reverse the bow turns right no matter where the rudder is. Having the rudder constanly right-over, all I need to do is put hard forward push when the boat starts to move backwards and backwards vice versa. The boat turns on a nickle even with light breeze.

Good suggestion. I should try it in the open water. Thanks.

I have sail drive but I leave the wheel hard left during whole sequence for a standing turn, since you don’t have any speed in reverse shouldn’t have any steerage and boat turn only from prop walk and prop wash when going forward. Does turning hard right help counter the prop walk?

Very Good point. I leave wheel hard right all the time when I do standing turn clock wise. This Beneteau has direct drive, but I think I’ll try your method leaving it hard left and see what happens. Thanks.

Hindsight, if I left forward throttle only for a second and immediately turned it off instead of 2 seconds, the boat may have less forward motion during the turn.
