2 Year Update: • Begonia Beefsteak Prop...
I know this isn't about succulents BUT I've had such a good time growing this Begonia Beefsteak from my friend Kathy, I just had to share! Learn how to propagate rhizomatous Begonias (and how to pronounce 'rhizomatous') by water-rooting the stems and via leaf cuttings. Begonias are such great plants to occupy you while waiting for your succulents to grow 😉

That Beefsteak Begonia is beautiful! I inherited mine. Been in our family for decades and we keep propagating it over and over in this same method. So we are growing them and giving one to each family member. Such an awesome plant!

Thank you! I do wonder how long the lifespan is and if that affects propagations... decades at least is good to know! The kind gal I got my cuttings from was worried hers might be getting too old as it was her grandmother's I believe, and it was looking sad.

The Beefsteak Begonia is my favorite plant of all time, I am constantly on the hunt for them. Last year I was lucky enough to get some from Steve's Leave's in Texas, they are doing pretty good. I first fell in love with them when I found one at the Philadelphia Flower show back in the early 80's, I have been hooked ever since. :)

Thank you! I learned so much about taking care of my beefsteak begonia! I have one for about 10 years and have never had it take off. the lady that gave a cutting to me had her since 1960 and told me it was given to her by someone who had had it 60 years then. Said they were popular during the Victorian era. Hopefully you able able to get out of the house more now that covid is settling. Thank you for brightening my day!

I have this same begonia plant, and just now found out its name , thanks to your video 🙂❤️. Thank you so much for sharing your experience growing and propagating this beautiful begonia species . I mixed about 10% of worm castings, and 15-20% coconut coir into the succulent soil, and it seems to like that. I think it does very well inside the house, next to a south east facing window (but the light is filtered by a covered patio ). The leaves are gorgeous … shiny, not wrinkled, and the underside have deep burgundy color.

If you're sure it's the same as mine, I would take more leaf cuttings to reduce the load on the plant's water uptake capacity. If they're already limp, best to keep them in water. It can take 30 days or more to see any new growth.

I've heard SO many stories of people first learning about them from their grandma since posting this! I'm glad you got a Beefsteak too - they're so rewarding! I just happened to have a lot of fast draining soil handy (I make it myself) and I knew I could just water more if I needed to. I do water it a bit more than a succulent but not much! Say a shallow watering 1x a week to 10 days. I've been keeping it indoors and I know letting the soil dry out for a couple of days doesn't hurt it and keeps fungal gnats at bay 🙏

That's interesting and good to know! I have a Lucerna and it's pretty forgiving but it's not doing as well as the Beefsteak - maybe that's why! @@SucsForYou have you ever planted your beefsteak begonias in regular potting soil? Or could I mix potting soil with sand and peat moss? I have a large beefsteak that I’ve had for years and have propagated many new plants off of it, but it’s suddenly not doing well. (I’m sure it has nothing to do with my two new pet kittens) I don’t want to lose this one! (I already lost the second large one I had) I’ve started propagating three new leaves in water, one has many roots already, and I’m going to try the cut leaf method you showed in this video so I’m using lots of different methods, but I want to give them the best soil options when I plant them. Thank you for making this video, it was very helpful!
@SucsForYou
@SucsForYou 2 года назад
@@juliangrimm835 I've only used fast draining soil because that's what I have handy for all of my succulents lol! Sand and peat aren't good drainage amendments. Sand is too fine to do much good and peat will retain moisture. If perlite is the easiest option drainage wise, it will work well, otherwise a mix of pumice and/or turface is a great addition. 60% organic soil to whatever drainage amendments is ideal. What's going on w/ the plants that are doing poorly or died? Did the other one die off before you got kittens?

@@SucsForYou hi! Thank you for the info. I guess I’ll see if our local box store has some Pumice. (I’m assuming you don’t mean pumice stones…you must be talking about something ground up) I’m not sure what I did to it. I recently moved, so they got placed in a new spot. And I did have them under a grow light, because I was worried they weren’t getting enough light. (We are in Oregon and there’s only like 6 hours of daylight total in the winter…or it feels like it anyway) and I also tried giving them some fertilizer. I think those were both bad decisions. I’m hoping I can save this one, if nothing else by propagating some babies and just starting over. Oh! One other thing, I think they got put in bigger pots, so maybe they had too much space?
@SucsForYou
@SucsForYou 2 года назад
@@juliangrimm835 Here's what the pumice I'm talking about looks like: www.generalpumice.com/shop/316-size-35-gallon-bag-garden-pumice All of the things you mentioned could have been an issue ... lack of light if the grow light isn't strong enough (and vs versa if it's too strong). Over-fertilizing when they're not in growing season... and if the pots are too big the soil takes longer to dry out, so possible over-watering. Good luck with the propagations! They're slow but pretty easy to manage.
