It's Sedum, you can also just lay it down on sand and the roots will start coming out of it in a few weeks. I never heard of using water on succulents before. We want to start carrying these in our nursery and I'm interested in every single way to propagate them. In Europe they use them for hedges, large hedges, and the bees love them. It's the middle of September and there were like 30 bees on them here.

Thanks for this awesome video! You've given me so many ideas for propagating this plant. My neighbor has one and doesn't give a flying fig about plants, so she's given me permission to take as many cuttings as I want. I'm redoing the landscape around my pool, and have already purchased and propagated the plants I want, but will head over to her yard for the Autumn Joy cuttings. Thanks for showing the plant after it was potted up with roots. It always makes it more exciting when you can see an example of the results you can expect! Thank you again for such a helpful video!

Thank you very much for this excellent video on how to propagate Sedum. It was short and very informative. Also thank you for showing the plant before and after propagation. I'm a novice Gardner and just subscribed to your channel. I hope I can learn a lot from you. Btw, I want to plant a small hedge in my garden but boxwood is very expensive and takes forever to grow. I'm looking for a plant that is inexpensive and can be divided multiple times. I think this plant (Sedum) fits the bill and should give me a nice hedge in a short time. I keep my fingers crossed.

TillaTequila72 thanks for your kind comments. Indeed, sedums will grow well over the season and will come back year after year. They will tend to die back to the ground as soon as it freezes, but will come back again full in the early spring. They don't grow very tall, about 16" to 24", so be aware of that. Have fun in your garden! - DFJ

Thank you DirtFarmerJay for the extra information. I didn't know Sedum dies back to the ground. I thought they stay green in winter. But that's ok as long as they come back next year I'm happy. I cannot wait to get a few Sedum cuttings from a friend and start my own little hedge. On a different note, would you please make a video on how to propagate an evergreen like Yew or Juniper or even dwarf Alberta Spruce. Thank you in advance Tilla

I did this very thing last night after watching your video. The example you showed of what the one stem became 2.5 months later... did it become 3 or did you plant 3 cuttings? If 1 turned into 3 that is quite impressive. Also, I planted 10 or so of the new buds at bottom of plant directly into soil to try something different. Do they grow slower or is it just another way of doing the same thing? THANKS for you video.... it's great!
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 8 лет назад
+medavid1111 - glad you liked the video. That was a single cutting, but it had plenty of buds that took off as you see them. Your direct soil plantings should work just fine. The way we did it will grow faster because the soil temps rise faster and this allows the plant to really get going. Also, keeping it's moisture levels optimized growing with lots of other plants providing both support and shade creates a great growing place. Is the sedum you're planting a similar variety or a low-grower? Lots of types to choose from. Best, DFJ

+DirtFarmerJay Similar Seedum. Close to a week down with one and a half to go until hopefully noticeable roots. I cut out 10 of the new blossoms and stuck them in soil and cut 12 stems for the glass of water to root. I then split the rest of the plant up and stuck in the ground out front. They have have been in the ground about a week and the today the weather finally broke and it's 30 degrees outside. From what I think I know, they should be fine even tho it's colder. Hardy is as hardy does?

Dear Farmer Jay, I bought five three inch cuttings of Blue Spruce sedum on Etsy. Should I use the same procedure for rooting as your tall types? Do I need to take some leaves off so they won’t rot? If so, how much? I really fell for this variety! After over forty years of gardening, I’m finally too disabled to garden outside. Can’t give it up, so just bought cacti and succulents I can grow as houseplants. I plan to take some out on the deck next spring so they’ll bloom well over next winter, particularly sedum and moss roses. But I don’t have room for big plants; sedum should do well, and I can give cuttings or even parts of the potted plants to gardening friends.

TheAuntieBa - thanks for watching our video and taking time to write. You sound like a life long learner, as well as being resilient by adapting to current situations so you can continue to enjoy some great gardening - just in a different setting. As some of my younger friends would say, "YOU GO GIRL!". As for rooting, sedums are pretty flexible. I would strip off the leaves on the bottom 2 inches of your cuttings and insert them into the starting medium 1 to 2" inches deep. You don't need any further penetration into the soil than that. Give a good watering and let them be. You'll get roots in about 3 weeks. Blue Spruce is a beautiful variety and you'll enjoy it. Let us know how it turns out. You can write us directly at jay@dirtfarmerjay.com. Best Regards, DFJ

@@DirtFarmerJay Thanks muchly for the advice and support! I found plenty on YT to multiply 2-3’ sedums and there’s still one in my gone wild garden, but you’re the only vlogger to come back with useful strategies on the shorter varieties. I’m just wowed by the luscious flowers and got very interesting, lovely little cacti and succulents. I’m starting a few dish gardens; two pretty big. I’m having so much fun I have no trouble sleeping!

Hello, you didn't mention if you used a potting soil especially for succulents. I'm trying to figure out if I can get away with my regular potting soil, or if I have to add sand and perlite to it. Thanks very much.
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 3 года назад
NSpector - we've used regular potting soil with no problems. In fact, the sedum grows well in a variety of soil types, some that are sandy, or have high clay content, or even with lots of organic material mixed in. You'll find them to be pretty forgiving. Have fun! Best Regards, DFJ

Jay - do I need to take new cuttings or younger cuttings or would it be ok to take a taller more established cutting? Is there any advantage of taking a younger vs. more established cutting?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 3 года назад
Julie, thanks for watching our video and taking time to write. There seems to be no significant difference between seasoned and new cuttings. As long as you get some nodes (the junction on the stems where leaves or roots emanate from), you should be fine. You can also readily propagate sedum by doing stickings of cuttings directly in beds, with the stems going in 2 to 4" deep. You can do that in the fall for overwintering and a good start in the spring. Let me know how it turns out for you! Best Regards, DFJ

What time of year do you take cuttings from sedum?
@JulieMikalson
@JulieMikalson 3 года назад
Anytime stems have health and strength. i yank a stem often to give away. Keep in mind to do it before cold nights hit in Sept or Oct...as stems dry and are showy but non- viable in winter.

do cuttings need a grow light?

Not if they are set in "bright shade" (indirect light). If bright shade is not available, then you will need a grow light. Best, DFJ

My sedum is almost 3 feet tall in the new house I bought. Can I just clip the tops off of them & use the roots already established? Or will this get me the same size? I’m wanting to make them smaller! Thank You.
@nspector
@nspector 4 года назад
Hi, the way to have a shorter plant is to prune them by about half early-ish in the season before they have buds. It will feel strange if you've never done that before, but you will get a shorter plant. If they're three feet naturally, it might bring them down to about two feet. Where I am, zone 7a, I do a lot of perennial pruning in early June for plants that flower in July and August. It makes them stockier, less floppy, and they have more blooms.

How do you collect sedum seeds
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 5 лет назад
Balerina, thanks for asking. Because sedum is so easy to propagate using cuttings, we don't use seeds. But, there's a trade off. If you want a lot of sedum quickly, collecting seed and planting is the way to go. Here's the short method - as the plants complete blooming in the fall, wait for the blooms to dry up and turn brown. Cut off the blooms and shake them over light paper to make it easier to see the seeds. They are quite small and can appear dust-like. After assuring they are dry, store the seed in an envelope until very early spring. About 6 weeks before the last average frost date for you area, sow the seeds in some starting mix. Do this by putting them on the surface of the soil and lightly pressing them in. Keep slightly moist, and transplant out when it warms up. I hope this helps! Best, DFJ

@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 8 лет назад
Barbara, sorry for the delay in response. By now, you've either gotten roots to show up, or you've planted them. Sedum can also be directly "stuck" in soil and kept moist (not soaked) and you'll likely have success. How did it turn out? Thanks for writing! Best, DFJ

@DirtFarmerJay

Ethan, indeed, that's the seeds. I don't use them, simply because propagation is easy. The seeds will germinate as well, but they may not breed true to the variety you got them from. But, what the heck? Give them a try and see what you get. Experimentation is half the fun! Best, DFJ
