Good video on leaf cuttings. This to me is a time consuming way to Propagate Autumn Joy. Those leaves will all do well. But they will take time to become a full sized plant. The plant flowers from late Aug. into Sept. most years. So as soon as the flowers turn brown, I either cut or snap ALL the branches off at ground level. I don't remove any leaves. Then I stick 5 stems in the ground or a pot in a grouping. Once Winter hits, the stems die and though you don't see it. Each stem has rooted in the soil. By next year you will have a new large plant. You can also cut each stem into 3 shorter stems and stick them directly into the soil. Several plants this year will be many plants next year. And all quite large. I live in a high desert area. Hot Summers and cold snowy Winters. They seem to do well in all soil conditions. I've given many, many cutting and full sized plants to neighbors and friends over the years.

The stems root very well. To me it depends on what my goal is. Really the leaves will turn into full plants fairly quickly and you get a lot more. But if you don't need a whole lot the stem cuttings are good to do. They they grow and you can make more from the new plants. OR do both. Take the stem cutting but strip the lower leaves to do leaf cuttings. Then you get the advances of both methods!

Autumn Joy sedum is a wonderful plant. It looks tropical yet it thrives in places with freezing cold winters. Thanks for your video!

Great idea! I have this plant and couldn't remember what it was called, I was just surprised it came back after winter. I'm definitely going to try propagating Autumn Joy Sedum

this is great. I pinched a few healthy stems, and came to see what I could do with them. I thought that I'd probably have to pull off the bottom leaves if I were to put it into water. Who knew that if I pull the leaves off just right that they themselves could be propatated. I expected to propogate only 6 stems, but now I've got a tray with . . . 1, 2, 3, 4... 37 leaves in some seed starting mix. If any of them take that will be bonus!!

Thank you for posting about sedum propagation. They are lovely 'but pricey so it is nice to be able to propagate from from existing plantgs.

When will the leaf/plant reach a mature height so can be planted in outdoor garden?
@Growingthehomegarden

It's probably best kept in a pot until the second year. However sedum tends to be extremely stout so it would likely be just fine planting after a few good leaves develop.

Is it the same for Sedum stenopetalum?

Your plants are so healthy. What do you use to amend the soil?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 2 года назад
I actually don't do much for sedums as they do not need extremely rich soil. I generally will use organic fertilizers, bone meal, blood meal, and compost of course!

Can you propagate with the stem in water? Got some stems in a small bouquet.

You can! Sedum roots easily with the water method.

If you are going to comment don't be rude. I didn't make a video but I've done this many times before. Here's a post I made way back in 2009. Look at the pictures and you'll see roots. growingthehomegarden.com/leaf-cuttings-of-sedum/

I looked Dave. Saw one Leaf with a root and NO meristematic growth. This is not free plants, it's torturing leaves trying their best to shoot a root which a sedum does easily anyway. Why lead folks down a path that has no ending without showing end results...or am I being horrid to you again by demanding honesty 😂 so please don't post pointless half made how to videos because you waste others time and efforts pursuing a goal you promised 🤔
