So my Crankshaft Position Sensor went out on my Jeep Again! Big Tip: Don't buy cheap CPS Sensors and Replace the Cam Shaft Position Sensor at the same time. The Cam shaft sensor is easy to replace.
If you are going to replace these sensors use Mopar sensors. They might be hard to find so I Used Standard from oriellys since from my research they are close to OEM Spec. The Crankshaft sensor is hard to remove from the hole and put back in but it is possible!
Take the air intake off to give yourself more room and make sure to get a socket set that swivels! This will make Replacing the Crankshaft Position Sensor on a 4.0 6 cylinder Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ Easier!
These are the parts and tool I recommend.
Crankshaft Sensor : Mopar amzn.to/3cDvLOx
Brand I Used : ebay.us/wOJyj1
Swivel Socket: amzn.to/3z20pZh
Socket Extension: amzn.to/3zqDVCx

I've done mine Twice, First time it died for no reason after getting gas, just died after pulling out of the station. OG sensor had 185k miles on it. Replaced with a MOPAR sensor, had no problems until stupid packrats nicked one of the wires. I couldn't wait for another $100 MOPAR sensor so i went with a Standard Motor Products Sensor as well. Standard Motor Products PC176 is the part number, Available at O'Riellys with a lifetime warranty. It's been installed since July 5th and i haven't had any issues. As for installing, I've always gone the hard way with using 3 feet in extensions going at it from behind the Trans cross member to remove/reinstall the bolt, removing the air breather assembly is a must for reaching between the engine and firewall and pulling the old one out/pushing the new one in. This is one part you do not want to cheap out on if you can. It's a pain. NAJAR as usual makes it look easy haha
@NajarOffroad
@NajarOffroad 2 года назад
It honestly wasn’t bad😂 the hard part is pulling the sensor out it seems like it always want to go back in the hole😂 I tried to check from the bottom but seemed like a lot of things in the way so I did it from the inside

I started out by following this, but (at least in my case) going at it from the inside was a frustrating waste of time. With a couple long extensions, I was able to directly get at the bolt from underneath, and by reaching up next to the rear cat I could easily swap out the sensor itself (after disconnecting the plug from the top and pulling the plug over to the driver'sside). I should note that I have 6.5" of lift, so working under there is easier than it might be on other rigs. Getting the screw back in for the vent piece inside was insanely aggravating and in itself made that method something I would not recommend. But it runs now, so... woohoo! 😁

99 Jeep Cherokee sport 4.0. Crank shaft position sensor replacement is so much easier done from the bottom and i promise that you have plenty of room and you'll be ina hellava more comfortable position . Cold engine About 1 1/2" length of 3/8 extensions 11mm skt ( Very IMPORTANT)- To insure the bolt doesn't fall out of the skt when reinstalling - pack thick grease in the skt or place a piece of paper towel or tape over the skt and then force the bolt into the skt . That latter is what I prefer. It holds the bolt tight when your looking for some alignment and also keep the bolt from falling into the bellhousing. It an be retrieved with a magnet .
@randybonner9870
@randybonner9870 Год назад
Also a swivel head is very helpful. If the swivel head moves too freely , try to cram a piece of tape in the moving joints or litterly a round of electrical tape Around the swivel. Some of you out there know that a swivel that's too free can be jst as much a headache .

I’ve done it both ways on my 2001 grand jeep Cherokee. Definitely eaiser to use the inside access under carpet. You still need a swivel but not much angle. It’s a 11mm bolt that holds the sensor on. If you have long skinny arms maybe you could access underneath easier, but not me! 😀

Thanks, Najar! I really appreciate and like your method of presentation and the way you show what needs to be done. I am gong to be removing the 42RE Transmission from my 03' WJ with 4.0 to have it rebuilt, (found a piece of broken snap ring in pan when changing fluid). It has 180,000 miles on it, so a complete transmission rebuild is what I decided to have done. Out of curiosity, I have 3 questions: In my Service Manual it shows a "Wire Shield" that goes between the CPS and the bolt; 1- Are you aware of that "Wire Shield" part?; 2- Did yours have that part?: 3- Do you know the part# for just the Mopar stick-on spacer for the CPS or what the thickness of the stick-on spacer is?

there are two options at that point. you can either cut the sensor flush with the bellhousing then use a punch and hammer to knock it in then remove the inspection plate on the bottom side of the trans to fish it out. The other option and what I ended up doing was just removing the entire engine and refreshing it while it was out with new gaskets. This made easy access to the sensor. Same thing happened to me a couple years ago on my 2004, 4.0. Took it to the Jeep dealer and they diagnosed it as the engine wiring harness, it hasn’t done it since. I was under the impression that it was the CPS as well at first, not sure if you might need a new engine harness as well or if it would fix the problem. It was fairly expensive from the dealer but I would recommended having someone trusted do a diagnosis, electrical problems can be tricky

Wasn't the issue on mine, the issue causing the crank sensor code turned out to be a worn out oil pump drive gear on the cam. That gear runs the cam sensor and if it wears out the cam sensor will "scatter" and cause phantom misfires and false crank sensor codes. It's a well known issue on the 2006 TJ models because the cam sensor drive unit fails and wears that gear out BUT it happened on my 2001 because the oil pickup screen clogged halfway and was putting too much strain on the oil pump (and too much strain on the oil pump gear on the cam). Weird thing was there were no oil pressure issues because it was still pumping enough oil I guess it was just putting too much strain on it to suck it through the clogged pickup screen.
