If you are debating on study architecture or not, sometimes it is best to write a PRO vs. CON list! Today, I compiled a PROs and CONs list for studying architecture and practicing architecture. You may agree with me - may not! - but I just wanted to share some insight on what it is like and what the grind is like as an architecture student.

The other day my school invited people from different careers to talk to us about them, I remember how my heart was pumped when the architects presented as they spoke of a museum project that they did and the fact that they had to learn about how the items in the museums were stored... which matches your last point... I don't know... everything just makes me excited for some reason. I hope to study architecture at uni. Thanks for uploading this!

As a person who was an Architect and now is a Civil Engenieer, Architeure is fun but having both degrees is far better. As and acrchitect i had to focus on a single high profile project at a time, as an engenieer i don't have that problem, and i can use my knowledge to do the concept for buildings on my own and let the architects figure the details and co design the project, so i can focus on just managing the team and approve designs. My proffesors in college use to say "Archictects make the fame Engenieers make the money" and he was absolutely right, its far more dificult to be a succesful architect than an engenieer, both good proffesions that overlap a lot higher you go, but one is the path of less resistance.

You mention “Not sleeping...”, it’s part of our style in architecture school. Employers know this. They have no problem thinking that as an employee you can still do that to get the design and or drawings done for their client so THEY can get paid. Somehow, too, the clients know that the architecture employees can stay up to draw.....

@UnravelingArchitecture
@UnravelingArchitecture 3 года назад
I am so sorry about COVID... I seriously hope this does not un-motivate you to study architecture. Architecture is so challenging, because it is so experiential. Studying architecture online vs. experiencing it and engaging in studio culture are two very different things. I never heard of "complementary hours." That's really interesting though!! my friend from undergrad did this. He was able to secure an internship - loved fashion already - and did know how to sew. He brought a unique perspective to the table, and honestly a lot of his skills he developed in the fashion industry were taught to him at his internships. SO, i think as long as you have a passion for anything in the creative industry, you can accomplish this with an architecture degree(:

haha bowl of beans!! lol this comment! A lot of time architects have to do structural testing too. So actually for the Johnson Wax Building designed by FLW, they tested the column design until it failed to see how it redistributes loads. So sometimes as an architect you have to do prototyping tests to see if a building will in fact fall down

where are you from?
@themidnightsketches9912
@themidnightsketches9912 11 месяцев назад
"The last thing we want is a building to fall down".. architects do not design structures, structural engineers do. So to be honest, I dont understand why architects need 7 years of uni + work experience. All they do is produce design concepts. Technical requirements are set out by the technical teams (facades, services, structures, landscape, specialist trades etc).. I don’t even understand what architecture is at this point and i studied architecture myself. Also, buildings have a lifespan. About 60-70 years. So the i dont know about the lasting impact.
@UnravelingArchitecture
@UnravelingArchitecture 11 месяцев назад
I believe this is a common misconception. Architects do in fact play a role in designing structures. I'm on an active project right now where my focus is designing the structural design along with the facade design. But we work with structural engineers who will do the heavier lifting in terms of calculating the appropriate loads and forces. They will undoubtedly ensure we sized the columns and bracing correctly. They're absolutely critical to the project and structure's success. But in terms of designing a structure, architects have to understand how it all works too - but just to a lesser degree. I would recommend looking up the original design for the Golden Gate Bridge. The original design was crafted by a team of structural engineers. While the one that was constructed and that we see today was designed by an architect. Architects cannot exist without the structural engineers and vise versa. I would recommend also if you're still interested in architecture seeking out to work in a firm. It's really refreshing. I think you'll understand more first-hand how your role as an architect shapes a project. Can't really do it without them in my opinion. But also keep in mind all architecture firms function differently too! So make sure you seek out a firm that really cares about design. Hope that helps(-:
