Lived in Tahoe for 15 years before moving to Nevada 7 years ago. It's changed so much since the pandemic. Bay Area and LA transplants have made the area unaffordable for local workers. I am not sure how they do it. Average rental is now $3k for 3 bedrooms. When I lived there my 3 bedroom was $750. Times are rough for the locals in Reno and in Tahoe.

My favorite are the all the nearby hiking trails. Nearby Mt Rose & or Slide Mountain SW of Reno or nearby Donner Lake in the high Sierras which is west of Reno. The only CON is all the people moving to Reno from Mexifornia.

8.265% sales tax would normally suck if not for the lack of income tax. Unfortunately, most people are priced out of Reno’s housing market.

Arrived in Reno in 1970 at 12 years old. Finished education there and had great times around Reno/Tahoe in the 70's and 80's. I left in 1990 and return yearly to visit family and friends. Reno has turned to Frisco East in all of the bad California ways, it really is not close to the cool nice place I grew up in. What a shame.

Thank you for your feedback. Reno has changed over the years, like almost any place would from the 70s and 80s. There are many great parts in Reno to live in. I wouldn’t necessarily call Reno Frisco East. I have friends who live in the bay and Reno and it isn’t a fair comparison. I’ve lived in Reno for almost 35 years.

Another pro are the many fine dining options in the Reno metro area. Large casinos have excellent restaurants. Atlantis Steakhouse being one of my favorites. Great restaurants elsewhere around town. Traffic isn't an issue unless you live in Spanish Springs and have to commute the Pyramid Highway. Yikes! Finally, the spaghetti bowl is nearing completion. Con? There are a fair number of street urchins roaming about. Overall the pros far outweigh the cons.

I work in hospitality and after moving here from Tahoe I found that the resorts have a lot more to offer (except winter sports). They’ve all been updated and the smoke only tends to permeate on the casino area since they’ve added filters and non smoking areas for non smokers, which makes it easier to work there. My boyfriend works in construction in Tahoe and is able to make higher CA wages while paying NV rent, most of his coworkers also live here or in Carson. If rent costed the same, I would still choose Reno for the convenience of living in a city and work opportunities.

Lest talk food....If you are from Hawaii be prepared to not have the high level of seafood you are used to seeing back home or even compared to Vegas. Yes Reno has Asian food but not on the level a Hawaiian expects lol. L&L barely counts as Hawaiian food. All you can eat sushi is popular in Reno but is just doest hit like Vegas or Hawaii. A red flag is when you order a bento and they give you a Chinese egg roll in your bento and a spoon? Reno does have amazing Thai food surprisingly! I will say Reno has great steakhouses, Mexican and Italian food. There is just a small handfull of hawaiian places here so be prepared for a small selection if you are Asian or Polynesian. I think this will change though now that Tesla and tech jobs are moving in. $5 billion in Tesla/tech jobs coming into USA parkway area will definitely mean more asains !!!! Heck I might even open a shave ice stand one day haha.

I would agree that Reno''s Asian food scene doesn't compare to Las Vegas or Hawaii. I wish it did though! Hopefully one day it will, especially with how fast Reno is growing. What about opening up an Asian restaurant instead? You could do very well if you find the right niche.

When I retired in July 2014, I moved to Reno from Phoenix. Reno has exceeded all my expectations in every respect. Love the mild change of seasons & all the nearby hiking trails. You made no mention of the Public Bus system that runs 7 days a week from 0500-midnight. You can get to most anywhere in Reno~Sparks by using the modern & up to date bus system. You made no mention of the numerous public parks through Reno~Sparks. You made no mention of the strong manufacturing based economy & that there are many high paying jobs in the Health Care or Construction industries. Also, Donner Lake & the memorial park & museum is a world class attraction. Numerous hiking trails up to waterfalls (Hunter Creek trail) surround Reno~Sparks. The ONLY CON is all the people moving to Reno from Mexifornia. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

Hi Amy, great videos, very informative. I'm retiring very soon and thinking about moving to Reno. Any thoughts about Reno as a good place to retire? I live in the Bay Area, born and raised, but I have spent some time in Reno and always liked it. I've noticed there's an anti-California sentiment among many people who are from Reno, or is this my imagination? It's a bit confusing to me actually. Living in the Bay Area my entire life I've gotten to know many people from the East Coast and elsewhere, I never had any problems with them and neither did anyone else I've known. I was thinking if I did move to Reno it might be a good idea to not even mention I'm from California - am I overreacting? Thanks.
@amyburgos4491
@amyburgos4491 Год назад
Thank you so much! Reno is a great place to retire. Reno has a lower cost of living than most places in California. A lot of people have been coming to Reno to retire from California. There are some people who are against people that are moving here from California. That just shows that they are against change and growth however, this is not the majority's consensus. I don't think you should hide the fact that you are from California. If anyone is rude to you about it, they probably aren't the people you would want to associate with anyway. If you need help in the future, I'd be happy to help you. :)

Vehicle insurance and registration as well as gas/electricity are less expensive. Lots of stuff to do, rib cook off, Italian festival, rodeo, air/balloon races, concerts in town and nearby Tahoe. Tahoe and Truckee are 45 to 60 minutes away. Great little mom/pop restaurants as well as higher end places. Lots of summer and winter out door activities pending your likes/disliked.
