Life altering surgery. I should've gotten it done 20 years ago. When my splints were removed today, it was's the first time I ever remember breathing correctly through my nostrils.. Even smells are so much stronger. It is a life changer, I'm relearning to breath because I'm taking in too much air now lol.

On the topic of ENS: the turbinates sense air and relay that sensation to your brain with a signal that travels through nerves. If those nerves are damaged partially or fully, the signal will become distorted or blocked. That's why even "safe" procedures like radiofrequency can result in ens symptoms. To completely eliminate the risk, a surgeon would have to map your individual nerve structure and use millimeter precision to avoid those areas. Now, just think of the bar that has been set for ENTs today. There is zero thought given to what actually causes this condition and many surgeons just pick whichever technique suits their fancy. They call it a "complication" the same way you might say your dog peeing on the carpet is a complication. No effort to understand what causes it and reluctance to even bring it up. To make matters worse, doctors are incentivized to downplay the risks as much as possible creating a predatory relationship between doctor and patient. In summary, the turbinates are relatively small and the "tolerance of precision" required to operate on them is not yet fully understood.

@@relentlessliving5588 I've been told the same thing by doctors. They say it's people being "ocd" or it was only a risk when they used to remove the whole thing. If you really don't want to go through with it then don't sign off on the procedure on the release form. Turbinates grow and shrink in response to allergies and other environmental factors. People said their's grew back after getting them reduced. My doc said it would only help a little bit to get them reduced so it's not super important. At the end of the day you gotta make the choice for yourself. There's no easy answer.

Sorry folks, this is inaccurate. While I applaud the doctor for including Empty Nose Syndrome - most dont - it is simply not true that total turbinectomy is the only turbinate procedure that causes ENS. Any alteration to the turbinates that alters airflow and/or damages the nerves can result in ENS. I have suffered from ENS for 20 years. I was able to power through until 2014 when I was teaching college classes. I began to suffocate in class and within months I was bedridden with severe ENS and POTS, an Autonomic Nervous System condition also resulting from faulty surgery. Over 7 years I have spent over $20K to restore the health of my turbinates and I am slowly recovering. It is important that people research this devastating condition and be fully aware of the actual risks involved.

I don’t think they explain ENS occurence accordingly , from what i’ve read total turbinectomy have 20% chance to cause ENS symptoms , partial 1 in 100 chance , and other submucosal reductions have around 1/750 - 1/1000 , this comes from dr Nayak , so yeah there’s still a risk with submucosal sparing techniques but they dont explain it like this .... , they say you only get ENS from no turbinates , then how is it rare if there wont be any total turbinates resections? There shouldn’t be any case.... They still trying to attract people into doing this operation but they’re forced to say about ENS because a lot of people learned bout it ...

@@Grantcohnsson I began treatment with ACell/PRP injections in Feb 2015. It is very slow and very expensive but I am grateful to breathe again. @@keyanno4111 Well, I think that the U.S. doctors who see ENS patients from all over the world know that the prevalence is much higher. However most ENT’s rely on the research , and we just haven’t had the research interest until recently. In fact, 2021 has seen a boon of interest in ENS so ENTS will benefit from reading about these additional cases. I was speaking recently with a neurologist who told me that his team is seeking grants to research possible nerve damage in the Inferior Turbinates. And there is a recent histological study showing significant damage to sensory nerves and tissue and significant scarring in the IT’s of ENS patients versus controls. So, though research is slow to surface, it seems we can look forward to more of these cases; ablation, outfracture, cautery, being added to plausible causes of ENS.

I had Septoplasty and Turbinate reduction done a few years back, and here is what i learned doing tons of research prior and even after! Please do your research, people!!! There are lots of ways to reduce your turbinates and lots of doctors, but the two most important aspects to keep in mind if moving forward with this surgery are: 1) MUST definitely find a doctor that is board certified, reviews are positive and most importantly, that he or she has enough experience with TURBINATE Reduction. 2) ANY doctor like the one you see on this video using the technique of actually REMOVING parts of the turbinates is a MAYOR red flag! Your turbinates should NEVER be cut off, period! They can be shrunk, and even when that happens, make sure it is done to the submucosa part of the turbinate and NEVER the mucosa, which is on the surface.

Change to anti inflammatory diet, invest in hepa filters/change filters in the home or auto, get rid of toxic chemicals in the home, furniture with formaldehyde, get rid of hidden mold, check for hormonal imbalances/gut health. You only get one nose in your lifetime. Once something goes wrong Ents have no way of reversing severe damages that aren't thoroughly discussed. First off, if you have a mild deviated septum then there's no urgency to operate on the septum and secondly, even if you have a severe deviated setpum accompanied by inferior turbinates hypertrophy the surgery's side effects (empty nose syndrome) far outweighs the benefits of having a more "open" breathing.

I just had this surgery this morning and I can see a difference. it's likely something happened during the healing process, or the doctor was careless with you. if there is a bulging in your forehead that seems likely it was an error in their part during surgery. I would call the ENT office you went to or the doctor that performed the surgery. You also mentioned that you can't focus and if that occurred after the surgery and was not a problem before then all the more reason to call. Maybe they could give you some insight on what is going on. wouldn't want you to die bc of doctor's negligence.

No surgeon would say so. Steroid sprays or medicated rinses over a few months should do it as long as your allergies are well managed. Changing your environment and/or diet would also help (ie. Many years of sleeping on heighten pillows or double pillows with same side sleeping cause for middle portion devietion of nose septum , if anyone sleeping on without pillows for 1 year with opposite side it would be straight , and many years sleeping on very low height pillow cause for hump on the septum , 4 inch heighten pillow is suitable for normal people..and tubinates hypertrophy also links with nose septum position ,it it straight then turbinates are normal in size ..

Do NOT do this. If you have some sort of breathing issue it is likely that problems with your nose are a SYMPTOM not the cause of your breathing difficulties. UARS and OSA are found in people with breathing difficulties. The most effective treatments for breathing difficulties ATM are double jaw surgery, bone-borne palatal expansion (i.e. MSE) and assisted breathing machines (like CPAP, BiPAP, obviously these only help at night). If you have a bump in your nose, a narrow palette and/or a narrow/recessed jaw, they may be the root cause of your breathing difficulties. This lady herself looks to have these issues. I do not suggest septoplasty because it is a cover up treatment that may lead only to temporary improvement in your condition.

Thanks
@nikos4641
@nikos4641 3 года назад
@@MattDrivas I personally think that most of the nasal procedures aren't very good because they don't fix the underlying issue. You need to find out the reasons why you can't breathe and then make sure you fix that i.e. do you have small nasal passages, small airway, deviated septum etc.? I recommended looking at Jaw Hacks RU-vid channel for some decent insights and you can learn about methods like MSE that can help majorly. For me personally, I have similar issues to you, I am early 20s, but I suspect that even if a septoplasty or similar surgery improved my breathing dramatically, I would still develop sleep apnea 10-20 years later on due to the recessed jaw / smaller airway component. It sucks bad being in this position so you need to decide what extent you want to go; for me, I will most likely get some sort of palatal expansion (MSE or EASE device) AND double jaw surgery, I'm not risking dealing with this shit ever again. BTW have a look at r/UARS and join the discord cause it'll help you learn much more and a good place to explore questions. Sorry you have to go through this bro, but I wish the best for you! I have a Septoplasty surgery coming up on thursday and the closer it gets the more stressed I get... What if I lose my sense of smell... My friend had Septoplasty years ago and somehow he ended up losing his vision. My doctor says he needs to remove a mass in my nose, straighten my deviated septum and go into my sinuses.. I'm not looking forward to this and I am getting severely stressed... T_T

Don't be stressed! I had a septoplasty done a month ago and I had alot of anxiety. I feel so much better now and I don't have reoccurring sinus infections anymore! Best decision ever! If you have any questions questions ask your ent so you can have reassurance. Besf of luck!

@@sinnoboy0000 Definitely a septoplasty and turbinate reduction. Best to get a referral to see a ent in your area from your primary care provider. It's been eight months since I have mine done and I can breathe so much better! It's definitely worth it! Good luck!

Cons: Your Turbinates will dry out over time after cutting them, nerves will die and continue to die after resulting in loss of sensation of airflow. Then you will feel sick and miserable for life and your ENT will say sorry busy please see specialist or someone else and your left holding bag of sickness for life. How many of you got reduction surgery and were told about dryness of nose and how it actually continues and worsens over time making you sick. Sure 1-3 years may feel super, then atrophy sets in and your miserable. Turbinates shrink with age, when you remove 40% now just imagine since in 30 years, lol bone dry and worthless they are and thats the facts kids.

I’ve read most of these comments on this video, and I gotta say I agree with all your comments. My surgery is booked for this Friday and after all the research and after carful consideration Im gonna have to kindly decline to have this procedure. As my deviation is only mild to the right side and my left side is completely fine so when they told me they will be also doing a turbinate reduction after we only agreed to do the septoplasty after the ct scans where viewed, then 10 days before the procedure I get told they gonna do the turbinates and instantly red flags 🚩 when off and I started researching and came across and learned more about ens and my god my heart goes out to all suffering around the globe with this horrible disease and to know that it’s happening from the people who are meant to treat and cure your diseases had me absolutely livid.

@@alexrizzo7485 The fact that they just threw in turbinate reduction at the same time as another surgery makes me think that they see you as just another patient to get rid off as quick as possible in a single surgery. Like throwing things at a wall and seeing what sticks. That together with how life altering the risks associated with turbinate reduction are makes me want to stay far away from any sort of nasal surgery as the industry is clearly crazy. This isn't surprising considering how many people die from misdiagnosis or mistreatments from doctors. You made the right chance in postponing your surgery because you can always choose surgery in the future, but you can never come back from it. Have you exhausted every single alternative? Starting with the obvious: allergy medication, nasal steroid sprays, daily sinus irrigation, avoiding food allergies or any pro-inflammatory foods, eating healthy (antioxidants), sleeping more, cleaning the air you breath (air purifier, replacing furnace filter, moving away from carpets or pets, etc.)? There's even studies, clinics and doctors saying that L.Sakei bacteria from Kim Chi can help with reducing sinus inflammation. If you haven't heard of this Kim Chi solution, I'm not surprised but think of how many other natural solutions you haven't tried. Surely, there has to be something causing your turbinate/sinus to be inflamed. It's not going to cure your issue, but there has to be something that can improve it and doctors/surgeons are in no position to tell us how to fix our own body as every individual is unique and has different genes that cause different issues. I would completely uproot my life, move to a different city and change my diet completely to fix this issue before considering surgery. Having said that, have you also considered minimally invasive procedures? I've heard that Balloon Sinuplasty is an example but make sure to do your own research.

I think one of my turbinates is causing slight asymmetry. My left nostril has the enlarged turbinate. You can see it if you look at the side of my nose. The side of the affected nostril has a slight convex feel and look. My non affected nostril has a slight concave look and feel. It is very slight, but I was wondering, if I got my turbinate reduced, what are the chances that, the Ala will transition to being concave like the other side. It would be a bonus to fix my asymmetry as well as my breathing and runny nose.

She told me I had a smaller opening for breathing which I've always noticed and in one of the upper sinus areas, some inflammation. She had gone momentarily to talk with the doc but I didn't see him before the procedure. The doc was nice and I've seen him for two follow ups since. The breathing on the left side is still the same. I probably shouldn't have let them talk me into it but I'm healing well since the procedure 12 or so days ago. I've only had a few sinus infections in my life and none for at least 14 years.
