Nicole, a two time cancer survivor and a patient of the USC Roski Eye Institute in Los Angeles, is being treated for severe dry eyes which were caused by ocular Graft verses host disease (GvHD). One of the effects of GvHD is that her eyes are unable to produce natural tears which is extremely painful. For three years, Nicole had been looking for a cure and it was only until she met Dr. Gloria Chiu did she find one. Dr. Chiu is an experienced optometrist at the USC Roski Eye Institute with an extensive background in treating patients with GvHD, a rare condition. Nicole was prescribed the PROSE (prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem) treatment, which looks similar to a contact lens and reduces symptoms, supports healing and improves vision. The USC Roski Eye Institute is the third of 12 sites in the nation to offer the PROSE treatment.

Dry eye is such an underrated disease. People dont understand that severe dry eye is almost a disability. Thanks for this video nicole I got my scleral lens 2 months ago.

Are you able to tolerate the sclerals?

@@soumalyasinha8093 Oh yes i am able to tolerate them pretty well. I am aware of the lens in my eye and i still have to put lubricating eyedrops on top to lubricate the exposed part of the eye but the pain is gone and its nothing as compared to what i was going through earlier.

@@Healthtips-mv6kn I am from India as well. May I know from where did you get your sclerals? Also did you opt for specialized scleral manufacturers like laserfit or eye print pro? It would have been very helpful if I could connect to you over some platform like WhatsApp or email to gather more information on your experience with sclerals.

@@soumalyasinha8093 I got them from Omprakash eye institute Amritsar, punjab. No they didnt use any laserfit technology. They just tried 2-3 lens and i was fitted. In my case it didnt took much time as i dont have any other eye problem except dry eyes and myopia. I'll be happy to share my experience. email ID- Bhavyavohra09@gmail.com

I have such an immense respect for her, not only for simply surviving her disease but for being that positive without wallowing in self-pity which would totally understandable in the case she’s in

Nicole, Thanks for posting the video on your GVHD and Prose lens experience. I had a BMT in 1992 and had a long bought with GVHD that affected my eyes too. Back then, they new even less about how GVHD affected the body and vision. After years of seeing dr. after dr., I found a dr. who not only wanted to see patients w / difficult vision issues, but had a solution. First, around 2002 I had a limbal stem cell transplant in one eye, then I got what was then called a scleral lens (now called a Prose lens). It made such a difference in my life. I was able to return to work, return to my active life style that included running and cycling. I currently only have vision in one eye, with the other eye being my "spare tire", as the dr. calls it. I could have another limbal stem cell transplant in my spare tire, but I am hesitant to do anything that my affect the limbal stem cells donor's, my brother's, vision just to improve the quality of my life. I know the chance of something happening to the donor's vision is small, but I'll only go there if I have to . Best wishes, Matt

I also tried the sclerals but I could not tolerate them since my eyes were very irritated. not to you?

@@javieracatalinasaavedragon1204 sometimes my eyes are very dry too and I feel like a burning sensation when I wear the lenses .. but I just try to relax and wait for a few minutes and the pain goes away. The more you use the lenses, the better your eyes will feel and the burning sensation will reduce. ( well, that was my own personal experience) honestly my life was very miserable without these lenses. I feel blessed to have them 🙏 I am sorry you don't have the same experience 😔
