In this video I talk about why I think that protecting your pride and joy from the harshness of the UK climate is vital.
I show a before and after of what my CBR650 is like having used ACF-50 and also conduct an experiment on steel nails using proper UK road salt to demonstrate how corrosion can set in after only 10 days.

I live next to the beach. I use ACF-50 on almost all my exposed metal of my farm equipment, landscaping equipment, motorcycles, trailers and anything else susceptable to rust. I couldn't find it in the retail market. I found it through an aviation supply company. It came with more governmental paper than an Obamacare application.

Lol - it's luckily much easier to get over this side of the pond in the UK.

ACF 50 is absolutely amazing stuff. It gets used on seaplanes to keep them in serviceable condition, if it weren’t for ACF 50 maintenance costs would be prohibitive for probably all seaplane airlines. Amazing stuff.

Very true. I also believe it was developed/used by the US Navy on their carrier planes. If that's the case it's a pretty good recommendation!!

im glad all these people have plenty of time to sit outside and wash their motorbikes once a week but for those of us who have a life and work long hours, this stuffs great and I swear by it every winter for my trusty winter hack.

I find cleaning and apply again every month, I find XCP rust blocker lasts 3 months, But I bought 5L of ACF50 so I'll use that first lol.

I have a 2006 Z1000 that now has 50k on it. It is ridden daily in all conditions. There is literally no visible corrosion or rust on the bike because I clean it ever weekend or of an evening. It takes one hour from start to finish. I use Turtlewax wash in a bucket of warm water & a sponge, then get all the detail parts with a micro fibre cloth, dry it off by hand then use either GT85 or MO94 all over, both have water dispelling ptfe. I never use a pressure washer. The ptfe stops any dirt from sticking making it dead easy to keep the bike clean. When the bike is clean it looks like it just came out of the crate. Of course I replace worn parts when needed. My point is that unlike owning a car, a motorcycle needs constant care, maintenance, & attention. That is one thing you have to take on board as a bike owner. Anyone can spare an hour a week rather than cover the bike in that ACF50 mess. Also when you use ACF50 it washes off the next time you clean the bike, so what is the real point of it? ACF50 was made to protect airplane electrical components from moisture; that’s all it’s really good for.

Duncan O I have used it for over 3 years now. I clean my bike by hand very thoroughly around November and cover my whole bike (no wheels or brakes) with acf50. Than I ride the bike for the coming 5-6 months without cleaning it because the acf50 forms a protective layer and only wash my bike regularly again after they stop using road salts. It really is that simple!

Best to buy it in the bottle with a hand pump sprayer, rather than an aerosol. Goes on better and is better value long term.
@MiddleagedRider
@MiddleagedRider 6 лет назад
Great tip - I always buy the liquid and use the hand pump - never the aerosol. Also it's worth saying that I always put the hand pump in a jug of hot water to warm the ACF-50 up first before using. It makes it more runny and helps get it in all the nooks and crannies much more easily.

Hats off to you for riding through a British winter. I've been using acf50 for While now, brilliant stuff and economical if used with the pump sprayer. I've just heard about XCP rust blocker. Have you tried that?
@MiddleagedRider
@MiddleagedRider 6 лет назад
Thanks. Personally, I don't find riding through the winter too bad, except for some odd days when it's either too icy or too cold! I really like ACF-50, although I know some people don't. Horses for courses. Haven't tried XCP. Did use and still have some Scottoiler FS365. That was good stuff too (loved the smell of it burning off the exhaust when riding after applying it!) but I found needs more frequent application as it washes off in the wet. Thanks for watching.

ACF50 is some excuse to not clean your bike regularly. Wash the bike every weekend if you ride daily then treat with a ptfe product. Nothing will protect your bike better than that procedure. ACF50 is a messy affair that doesn’t give a true protective results in the real world.
@MiddleagedRider
@MiddleagedRider 6 лет назад
Respectfully I disagree - Of course regularly washing the crap off the bike is the ideal scenario, but with busy lives that's not always possible. ACF50 can be messy, especially if you put too much on and I do think from my own experiences that it does work well and it's the best solution for me currently. What's important and the point I was trying to get across at the start, is with UK weather *SOME* form of corrosion protection is vital be that ACF50, FS365, Corrosion X or something else.
@Puddingtops
@Puddingtops 5 лет назад
I agree ! Acf50 is crap . When I carried out corrosion tests it wasn’t as effective or long lasting as a simple oil like 3in one . I was sucked in by all the claims and bought the spay can at first and found it disappointing but then bought a 1litre bottle pump action spray bottle as all the hype can’t be wrong surely ? Yep it was also crap. Tested it on circular saw blades , nails , Allen keys and nuts and bolts which were left outside and found it far less effective than other products. Did these tests after finding it didn’t protect parts on the underside of my car and parts on a bicycle. Wouldn’t use it on my wheel barrow let alone an air plain lol !

Ummmm maybe washing your bike once in awhile is the best solution
@MiddleagedRider
@MiddleagedRider 5 лет назад
I do wash my bike, but not always practical to do it straight away when you get back from riding. Plus even a few days of salt and crud sitting on the bike can start to cause corrosion. The other advantage you miss here is that using ACF-50 makes it a lot easier and quicker to clean as the crud comes off more easily!

ACF50 is overpriced crap - your bike looks like it's been ridden through the winter. Every fastener has corroded. Save your money and buy Carplan Double TT
@MiddleagedRider
@MiddleagedRider 6 лет назад
Everyone has their opinion. ACF50 - expensive? Yes but it's definitely not crap. Not used Double TT - looks like an improved WD40 type spray. The reason I like ACF50 is not only does it protect but it also attacks existing corrosion and it neutralises, chemically, road salt.
